  1. Re:I'm no scientist, but on Mysterious Force Affects Pioneer 10 & 11 Probes · · Score: 2, Interesting

You are correct to say that the mass of the planets and asteroids will have an effect on the probes. But considering that 99% of the solar system's mass is in the sun, the effect caused by the additional mass will be almost insignificant and certainly not enough to cause the effect seen on the probes.

  2. Is this the real source of the spam on Volunteering for OSS == Sign Up for Spam? · · Score: 1

I find it difficult to believe that the spam that you are receiving is as a result of your email address being on a list associated with an oss project.

My email address is openly available on numerious mailing lists and publications, and I also administer a small sports club website in which my personal email address has been visiable for years. During that time I have constantly used the same email address. But to date I only receive about one or two spam mails per week. It may be that my experience is unusual, but I highly doubt that your experience with spam can be attributed to your email address being published through the open source project that you were involved in.

  3. Would be only short term on Is The Earth's Rotation Changing? · · Score: 3, Insightful

It seems like a reasonable enough argument that the rotation period of the earth would change during an el nino period. But once this the el nino effect had ended the rotation of the earth would have to return to normal, so any effect that might occur would be only short term. Also due to the large difference in the mass of the solid earth and the earths atmosphere, the change in the earths period of rotaion would be so small as to be unmeasurable and therefore unimportant.

  4. Cost is not everything on Win2k Cheaper than Linux · · Score: 4, Insightful

I am really sick of reading all this rubbish about the cost comparison between linux/unix and windows. For the sort of work that i do which is scientific based, the applications that we need are not available under windows. So it is impossible to run a cost difference between linux and windows, linux is basically priceless. And I am sure that there are some people that it works
the other way for as well.

In order to decide what operating system to use, one should first know what one wants to do with their computer and then decide what operating system to use. Cost should not be the deciding factor (although an important one) when choosing an operating system. If an operating system does not do what one needs it to do, then no matter how inexpensive it is, it is just wasted money.

As for training costs while using computers. It has got to the point now where the basic operation of all operating systems are very much the same. Using a browser in linux is almost identical to using it under windows. So it is impossible to say that training costs are substantially different for any operating system.

  5. Re: Study this on Your Eyes Will Melt Out Of Your Head · · Score: 1

People that work in factories sitting at a desk (assembling components or whatever) also suffer the same type of health problems as those of us that spend alot of time in front of computers. There is no evidence that it is the crt that is damaging to our health. And all of the health side effects can be eliminated by taking proper exercise and eating properly.

The only effect that crt screans might cause to health is a result of the very high radiation from the screans, which can be reduced by using an anti glare/ radiation screan.

  6. Prevention the best cure on More on Orbital Space Debris · · Score: 1

As with any debris, pollution prevention is the best way to clean up the problem.

Due to the cyclic expansion of the earths atmosphere caused by changing seasons, solar flares and meny otherthings, all debris in low earth orbit will in the medium term be removed itself. This is because, as the atmosphere expands it exerts more friction on the debris causing it to slow down and heat up, causing it to re-enter the atmosphere and be burnt up. This will automaticaly happen over a time frame of 10 -> 20 years.

Therefore to solve the problem of space debris all that needs to be done is make sure any material that is taken into space by humans is returned to earth.

As for non-human debris and debris already in high earth orbit, due to the volume of space involved this would be impossible to remove, although most satalites etc are for the present and near future are interested mainly in low earth orbit.

  7. What is the CNN article saying?? on Einstein's Theory To Go Beta Testing · · Score: 2, Interesting

The CNN article is not very clear as to what it says. This comes from the fact that There are two different theorys of relativity.

    1 The special theory
    2 the General theory.

The special theory concerns what happens to the laws of physics as a person is traveling at a constant velocity, whereas the general theory is concerned with bodys that are accelerating ( In general relativity acceleration and gravity are equivalent).

So since the ISS is in orbit it experences an outwards accerleration( the same as one experences as one goes round a corner fast in a car.) In space there is gravity on the ISS but it is very little. This means that the ISS will experence a slight change in the ticking rate that is recorded. But this is explained by the general theory of relativity and not the special theory.
