In fact it runs on FreeBSD, the One True Free Unix.

Suppose the government never actually pays you gold for your paper money. Is it worthless too?

There is certainly equity behind MS shares: brand equity, expected future sales, and a huge pile of cash. It doesn't ever have to get actually liquidated in order for the shares to represent real value.

  3. Great news on RMS Says Hurd Could Be Loosed in 2002 · · Score: 1

Well, I'm excited. I signed up a few years ago to get the Hurd disto delivered by flying pigs, and I'm really looking forward to seeing just how exacty that delivery method works.

Will they fly overhead and drop it using a parachute?
Will they land at my door?
    Come down my chimney?

    I'm all a-flutter.

  4. Re:aerons are great... on Aeron Chairs As Stupidity Barometers · · Score: 1

Sweaty-Ass is nothing. I literally suffered from 'roids just about every day while I was sitting in the regular, cheapo chair at my old company. I bought my own Aeron (yes, they were too cheap) and my ass has been happy ever since. Consider how much you pay for a comfortable car, and then consider how much more time you spend sitting in your chair. $600 is trivial for the amount of hapiness it brings.

On which planet does a gallon of gas weigh 6lbs?

The article says it's campstove fuel, meaning naptha. Naptha has a density of 0.66, meaning about 5.5 lbs per US gallon.

  6. Cautiously optimistic on Congressman Boucher Responds · · Score: 1
This congressman is actually clueful about the net, and has reasonable views. I don't agree 100% with what he says, and I'd like him to take a firmer stance against DMCA provisions against publishing decryption algorithms. Nevertheless, this guy is MUCH better than most of the rest of congress, as evidenced by bad legislation like the CDA.

In order to have any political influence, you have to accept some level of compromise. Sure, this guy isn't a rabid free-the-net zealot like many /. readers. But realistically, nobody like that will ever be successful in politics. So we have to take what we can get.

You have to admire the guy's courage in giving a real interview and revealing real opinions to a (admit it) somewhat hostile audience. I wish more politicians would do that. I wish our president would say anything substantive at all.

I think all you zealous DMCA-bashers should still support and encourage Boucher on the basis that he likely to lead to more sensible 'net regulation than the status quo.

  7. Major Burnout on Where Do You Get The Games? · · Score: 1

Wow, you have seriously burned out if that is your plan. I mean, I've sometimes thought about chucking it all and becoming a movie projectionist but at least I wouldn't lose my shirt doing that. You should think seriously about whether there is a sustainable business doing this.
