  1. Tell Me More About PAX on Ask Gabe and Tycho of Penny Arcade · · Score: 2, Interesting

I understand your first PAX (Penny Arcade Expo) game convention was a huge success. Why did you do it? What's coming up for next year? Are you planning to expand to other cities? How can you top this year's Omegathon prize package?

  2. Re:No freaking way on Would Ansel Adams Have Gone Digital? · · Score: 1

I've seen movies of Ansel in the darkroom demonstrating dogging and burning his prints. This means giving areas of the print more or less light as the paper is being exposed to light from the negative. It's done by moving various shapes of cardboard between the enlarger lense and the print paper. It was amazing to watch him work.

He did not just print the photo as it was shot. I bet he would have gone digital.

  3. Re:what's the point? on Your Fingerprint Buys Groceries in Seattle · · Score: 1

I live two blocks from this store and shop there every couple days using my debit card. This would be faster and easier. Here where it rains 360 days a year you won't have to fumble under your gortex for you wallet. Plus it would be so cool! Just press your finger and wait for the beep.

Despite how cool it would be I probably won't sign up. I agree the risk of having my card number and PIN stolen is too great. Not to mention they'd be able to track how few vegatables I buy. With my mother's maiden name it's only a matter of time before word would get back to her.

  4. Re:What disqualifies you for a security clearance? on Dot-Commers vs. Government Contractors · · Score: 2, Interesting

Back in the mid 80's I answered a knock at the door of the house I shared with some college classmates to be greeted by a guy in a suit with a badge. Fortunately, I'd been warned. A former roommate was getting a security clearance and they were interviewing friends, etc.

Now I knew he'd been honest and confessed to some consumption of some flammable refreshments. I didn't let the agent in the door (too much evidence lying around) but did answer his questions, agreeing with what my roommate had said. He got his clearance.

Several years later, I got a secret clearance (which I never used) by also being honest. They seemed to be mainly interested in whether my drug use could be used to blackmail me (did my parents know, etc.) and whether I was still doing it ;).
