Just because there has been "a dramatic rise in child pornography online" doesn't mean that more children are being exploited, just that child pornographers are making their product more widely available using technology. I think what Katz was trying to get at was that perhaps with the widespread availability of kiddie porn on the net, folks who are into that sort of thing will be able to get their fix online (sharing a small number of exploited children) rather that each having to find and exploits children themselves.
PCs are a luxury good? WTF have you been smoking?
Go ask your bank manager to turn off all his 'luxury goods' for a few minutes. PCs are a necessity to modenr businesses, don't forget that.
I'm not intimately familiar with the intricacies of the Fair Use law, but I'd imagine it would probably be sufficient for the record company to package a CD in such a way that by breaking the seal on the package you implicitly agree to some kind of lisence agreement which waives your Fair Use rights.
"Making moths that glow is going to be a field day for birds..."
Anyone else been wondering whether its safe for birds to be eating glowing moths?

"...I think Britain has actually won more noble prizes in total than the US..."
I would imagine they would, seeing as the US doesn't have a recognized nobility. Unless they've been giving Noble Prizes in Funkology to Prince or Sir Mix-a-Lot...:)
What kind of penalties? I'd imagine they'd have to be financial, but I doubt Napster has much $$ lying around. Its been a while since BMG bailed them out, so they must've already blown through much of that cash.
If they really want to go out with a bang, and they're sure they're screwed anyways, why not stay up for as long as they can? Let the courts fine them... if they go bankrupt noone'll have to pay anyways.
If anyone else tries to copy the HavenCo/Sealand...
You'd probably have to kill me if you told me, but has anyone else thought of doing this? Are there other little tiny soverign nations that HavenCO could approach?
Are there any other wackos (and yes, before HavenCo came along those guys were wackos) sitting on used up peices of metal claiming to be king anywhere? I know if I were the British gov't (or American/Japanese/Canadian/etc.) I would've made sure to recount all the abandonned platforms when Sealand first started making waves several years ago...
It would probably just be too easy for a (for-profit) corporation who wanted to keep their.org domain to do so. Perhaps by spinning off their web-site as a non-profit - or some other legal wrangling. Do you really think M$ is going to give up microsoft.org without a fight?

If you aren't sure, get a CSc degree. If you aren't good at Math, get a CSc degree, a CEng degree is four years of math.
Actually my university it's the opposite. CS is a math-heavy degree - I will actually recieve a B.Math (Bachelor of Mathematics) degree with a major in Computer Science. CompEng is more on the practical side - much less programming/theory/algorithm stuff after the first year or so and lots more hardware and design.
I guess the moral of the story is that the contents of the actual program at the actual university to which you are applying are most important in making this kind of decision.
These guys just can't seem to understand that the CD buying market itself is not the same as it was 25 years ago...
Actually, the demand for CDs is quite a lot higher now than it was 25 years ago...
I suspect University of Waterloo is has a pedagogical philosophy more along the lines of a community college and scimps on theory.
Suspect again. U(W) has very rigorous theory requirements. See here for the Electrical & Computer Engineering degree requirements.
...and other 'e-tailers'?
Will I have to pay $0.01/page to buy books?
Would anyone here have paid 10 cents to read the HowStuffWorks article?
Yes, but the last time I checked, nobody was addicted to Windows ME.

Believe it or not, CDs are about 20 years old now...
There's an interesting (and simple) explanation of the technology behind this at HowStuffWorks.com:e .htm

Clean up the gene pool? I doubt it. It would probably promote the procreation of NRA members. (And what a would that'd be!)

Yeah, listen to an Engineer tell you to study engineering instead of Computer Science. Makes sense to me...
