It covers all aspects, included those that you gave in your examples, and I would credit it to one of the reasons why the GNOME desktop is so nice to use.

I can see their point - after all - it is their operating system. If they wanted to make the default wallpaper good old mr goatse, they could (if they didn't mind the sales impact).
But has anyone noticed how there are alot of posts similar to this one (minus the goatse reference - that is an added bonus), maybe it is because we are being 'forced' to determine the lesser of two 'evils'?
