Windows used to bluescreen if the floppy disk you were writing to disappeared, but it does not anymore. It yells at you but it is ok with it for the most part. Linux on the other hand really does not like it when hardware disappears without its knowledge; this is most apparent on mounted filesystems. One part of robustness is how we deal with failure and having a USB drive yanked or reaching a bad part on disk or in a file system should not cause the kernel to spit out thousands of error messages, one is enough, and deal with it already; don't lock up on me, if the file is inaccessible say so and move on.
now i know where i can go to find out how to configure linux services the RedHat and SuSE approved way. Thank you microsoft for those VERY handy videos.
I've had to service printers where people had used non-OEM ink and it can get ugly, at best just the printhead clogs up and needs to be replaced, at other times ink is just everywhere and inkjet ink stains everything.
For Lasers it is not as bad, but i've found the refilled cartridges to be more leaky and I had to clean out the printers on a regular basis. Also about 1/10 refills was DoA or otherwise defective.
On the other hand what HP charges for ink you would think they had to mine in on the moon. Canon printers with seperate printheads from ink resevoirs bring down the price of ink considerably.
At least that what we used to be able to say until some hardware company decides to implement this wierd scheme that Linus is advocating. If i buy some hardware i do not always want to run the software that it comes with, like say Solaris/Sun or Microsoft Windows XP/Dell. I do not want Dell dictating to me which OS or distribution i run on MY hardware.
See the Egg was on its back panting and next to the egg there was a chicken looking pissed. The Chicken rolls onto its side muttering "well that answers that question".
If memory serves correctly, US postal law says that anything in you mailbox delivered by a postal worker addresses to you is yours.
If for example, company A makes a shipping mistake and ships you your neighbors $5000 computer, it is legally your and the company may not ask for its return.
This book, if sent by postal mail to this Dr. without the Dr. asking for it, means that the company gave the the Dr. this book. The company cannot legally ask for the return of this book.
Only one person mentioned this and then only in passing but Fallout: Tactics is the ultimate in Real Time Strategy, you cannot charge a fortified position and expect to win, you have to think, plan and then execute, (oh yeah make sure you save as well)
here i am reading this story, reading all you guys posting how amazing this is, etc etc etc
didn't any of you hear of this before? the sysadmin at my former workplace told me this story months ago as we were discussing(more like arguing) novell vs. linux...
i dont expect/. to be the latest in the news, i also dont expect a story about a Novell server to be widely known (like what is novell right?) but SOMEBODY out there other than me this must have heard of this before, right?
