I think that scientists that are forecasting global warming are probably right in their calculations. However, I don't think that there is really a great cause for concern for the fact that the planet is heating at a higher rate than normal. People want us to believe that it is so that lobbying groups and political pundits can have their respective agendas pushed to the forefront. The only thing a climate model has ever really shown is how truly complex and dynamic the earth and its climate are. I still am holding firmly to the belief that we humans haven't been around nearly long enough to wreak the havoc that is supposed to be behind the earth changing temperature. Anybody with a dissenting opinion feel free give me some more data to sway my opinion. Or label me a troll, whatever floats your iceberg
Oh well, you couldn't blame them. Everybody succumbs to the succubus of greed from time to time. Sucks bad for the people in india who may only make 5 dollars a month. Have to blow the whole thing just to read slashdot without ads.
Why is it that the government is always being asked (or doing so without being asked) to step in and implement legislation that nobody but big business asked for. I don't remember ever hearing about Joe Schmoe in Louisiana saying hey, I think Digital Copyright protection legislation needs to be beefed up. lets create some pseudo real organization like the DMCA and the RIAA. Does anybody ever remember that happening? I never saw the petition that was organized by/. ers saying that they needed their rights infringed on more and more on a daily basis. If I had I at least would have had a good laugh. But my biggest concern, question, rant, whatever you want to call it is why is it that corporations always start out ahead of the general public. It seems we are always on the losing end of proposed legislation and are continually fighting an uphill battle to bring the truth to light. I mean come on, how long can greed and corruption prevail over the people who know better?
Man, what a loss. I myself was practically raised on his cartoons. I am deeply saddened that his genre of cartoon has passed and it seems to me that it won't be revived now with the emphasis on Disney and Pokemon Digimon characters. His level of entertainment was in a class by itself. He will be sorely missed. Thanks for all the memories
Wouldn't that be the same thing as someone leaving threatening messages on your answering machine and then turning the tapes over to police? I think so, and if that turns out to be the case then I would agree that no wiretapping laws have been broken

The methods involved with Genetically Engineering food in previous generations is so completely different from how they are doing it today that it is not even worth listing. Suffice to say that I know of no Irish potato farmer in the 1700's that had the ability to implant a jellyfish gene into the potato to make it more disease resistant. Nor could they clone a duplicate of the animal that they were breeding to increase desired traits. Previous attempts were all within the parameters that nature had set up for the division of plants and animals. Science and technology today has since circumvented those barriers. I am neither for nor against genetic engineering. But I do believe that when we let twisted corporations instead of prudent and moral panels of scientists hold the reigns to this massive pandora's box of potentially deadly technology the results could be devastating beyond what anybody has even hinted about till now.
I rant and I rave and still they call it ranting and raving
I don't think that sanctions and fines are sufficient deterrents anymore. They should force the decision makers to live in the environment that they created for a few years, drink the water, eat food etc. And then see whether they want to continue their profit driven practices anymore. Maybe if their skin sluffs off a little bit after bathing in the water, they will turn off the spigot.

Defining Globalism

I would agree with most of what was stated except for the fact that it is based on an assumption that misses one particular point. The countries that these supposed "evil" globalised corporations are moving into, have no real political or economic structure of their own. This being the case it is essentially easy to make a business deal and let the country's government sort out the human rights nightmare. The people that were living in these countries before globalization are living in squalor anyway. You can't tell me that Nike and Ford created the environment that they are moving into. That's just preposterous, otherwise they would just create the environment within the United States. There is a real plus here that I don't think a single person has touched on. Yes it would be bad to have a world controlled by a corporation instead of a government, but a lot of issues are being brought to light, just from the simple fact that some of these companies are there. It will take some time, but I really believe that there are more positives than negatives with a global society at this point.
I don't think it's as simple as that. Many people just don't care for the idea that perhaps their country is wrong. The attitude I hear most often from US citizens when I comment on US foreign policy is one of indignation that anyone dare question the policies of the "Greatest Nation on Earth".
I don't know which citizens you are talking to. (I would venture to guess that its not even that many) but I for one happen to think that there have been definite foul ups in Foreign policy over the last 30 years in the middle east. However, with that have also come some really great strides. There has been the attempt, albeit not fully recognized to modernize the economies and governments of a region that previously was agragrian in its existence. But all that being said, I still think that the course of action that is being taken is right and just and I support it 100 percent. I would also say that it needs to be taken at least 3 steps further, to complete military action and subsequently a complete rebuild of the nation. I think that until we can correct some of the errors of the past, (we did train the people we are fighting) they will continue to spew hatred into the minds of their people. And its surprising how convincing one is when he's the one holding all the guns.
I am a person that is personally shocked and deeply affected by all that has transpired since Sept 11. That said, I am also a person that believes deeply in the freedoms that America was founded upon. People have been tossing about the effects of bombing during the month of Ramadan. I would agree that it should be a consideration except for one small fact. There is no way that any organized religion on the face of this planet that has any credibility at all could possibly condone the actions of Sept 11. Therefore, Ramadan is not an issue to me since the people that are hiding behind the shield of Islam do not actually believe in Islam at all. I personally think that not enough military involvement has been put into use yet. Look back to Vietnam and the Gulf. We may have driven Saddam back to Iraq during the Gulf war but he is by no means out of power. We lost Vietnam because the administration handcuffed our military. If we are truly going to win, then it is going to take a lot more effort, not just militarily but after the fact to change these people's views at a fundamental level. I am sorry but from a strategic standpoint, if they let up, they are only giving the moles a chance to dig deeper.

First off, anyone with any knowledge of tactics and even a passing knowledge of the game of Chess I would consider qualified for this discussion. All of the above mentioned methods have been tried before. The Russians tried for 15 years all manner of tactics and got nowhere. To simply say take over a mountain top and block a few roads and we will win "THE WAR" is ludicrous. This is an entirely new domain of battle and conflict management. It's going to take some serious new ideas to counter this threat. I just hope that we don't end up in another Vietnam.
