Isn't that the whole point in posting a story? To foster your own personal agendas? What would be the point in making a contribution to/. then if everything was vanilla in format and taste. You would think that the members of the/. community would feel a certain sense of pride knowing that their collective knowledge could help another business/community out with some free advice.
IMHO if you don't like it then stop reading the damn thing. It's just like TV... If you don't like the channel you're watching then turn it, or turn it off and do something else, but don't bitch because you don't like the content.
So what would one then do? I'm sorry, but there's enough strange things going on in the world right now. I don't have to look far to find conspiracies. Even if somebody oversimplifies and understates an actual article. The ramifications of what these companies are doing boggle the mind. I would hope that one would look past the posts that are detrimental to the overall feeling of the poster. Look into Monsanto specifically and see how they lied about poisoning a town of 30,000 people for 40 years and did nothing to prevent it. Then they bought out the EPA and are now in charge or doing their own investigation into the cleanup. With GOVERNMENT FUNDING!!! And what sucks is Biotech companies are one of the fastest growing fields in the country. With little or no oversight from the Federal Government and with parent companies that could give two shits if their products kill people as long as they can make a profit.
I'm not quite sure I understand how giving out personal details is considered payment for anything. The majority of people gaining access to the site are not giving out any personal information what so ever. I truly believe that the point that was being made above was not that everything should be free. Only that the tactics that more and more sites are using to glean personal information from people is getting to be a pain. Databases of personal information on people are worth big bucks to marketing companies that are constantly trying to come up with the next tele-tubby or pet rock or whatever you want to call it.
Personally, I think they ought to give some fifteen year olds a crack at running things. They can't screw it up any worse than it already is. Might do us all some good.
(BTW. Which one of us is considered to be using the proper version of English? You or me?:)
I don't think that it was intended as a "Stick it to the man!" type of statement. I think that the fact that they require registration is just a massive waste of time and yet another database that can be sold to telemarketers to invade your household and sell you shit you don't want. Oh wait.... did that sound like a rant.... I apologise then. Apologies for butchering the word apologize as well.
Aside from the misuse of the word loose which is one of my pet peeves, I would have to agree with the author here. No matter where he/she/they come from, it must be getting pretty hard to ally with American practices when it seems like more and more we are running roughshod around the planet like we have eminent domain of the frigging thing.
I know I don't join in as many discussions as I probably should but I would like to say thanks to all those at/. for helping be a part of a movement that has continued growth and success.
Don't feel bad because its cheesy. You know you like the warm fuzzies too.
I was using Kazaa Lite and upgraded to the 1.7 version that they just told me was available. After doing that my firewall went nuts trying to accept connections to machines that were odd to say the least to me. They weren't even connecting on the kazaa port anymore. Piece of crap software anyway. What makes people think that this is okay to do anyway?
Now somebody go tell my wife that me coming out of the man room covered in sweat and after swearing constantly for an hour straight doesn't always mean my p0rn download was crap.
If you ever want to prove a great point about nothing, just commission a study about it.
I have listened to the politicians and the people espousing words like revenge and justice. After watching those buildings fall last year, and yes I know it is a small tragedy compared with others on a global scale, I can't help but think to myself... Why? Why did this happen. What made these people so filled with blind hatred towards an entire nation of people? It has been 365.24 days and I don't feel like one step has been made towards answering that question. I see an impending escalation of violence in the world and all I'm asking is why? I really don't think its too much to ask for....
No, not exactly. What he needed was another 40 billion to cover the deficit that he had inherited from Reagan and Iran/Contra affairs and assorted other fiascoes. There were no guts and backbone involved. It was purely a means to an end. To which the American people had no say in. To which the American people have very little to say in any more with Jr. in the house.
that's not what I meant. What I was getting at was the fact that once you get somebody in a position of power you have very little say in what they dictate to you as far as policy goes. The previous post was all about voting people in to office that we liked. All I was saying was that I may like who I vote for, but somehow, inevitably by the time they get into office, they have forgotten why I sent them there. (Remember some of us got drafted in Vietnam.)
If it was only that simple we would have done that long ago. The problem with American's is that we inherently want to believe the crap that most politicians spew out of their mouths during a campaign. The problem is that when they get to office, they conveniently forget most of what they said to get them there. Anybody remember "READ MY LIPS, NO NEW TAXES" What a load of crap. "I DID NOT HAVE SEXUAL RELATIONS WITH THAT WOMAN, MISS LEWINSKY" Ring a bell? Term limits of about 2 years would be a better solution. No more length of life terms for elected officials. At least then it would cost corporations more to keep paying off new people:)
My sig doesn't matter, neither does most of what I say
About motivation and or firing people who aren't doing their jobs. What happened with sitting somebody down, looking them in the eye and telling them that they are causing harm to the project and asking them what they need. It sound to me from the post that you are obviously not satisfied with the quality/quantity of their work so then its up to you to bring them up to speed. Its not hard to talk to somebody about what may or may not be bothering them. And in the five minutes of conversation you might better learn what they CAN do instead of bitching about all that they cannot. Take notes of your conversations and when somebody above you asks for a status report from your project, refer to your notes as per your conversations with the other "engineers" Not only does that cover your ass from the who's running this thing department it might actually offer some feedback to the people that you are talking about.
Try to remember that you once sucked at something as well and try to keep an open mind.
How the hell this happened? I mean, I know that there are some stupid politicians out there but I can't believe that anything like this has even been proposed. Well actually I'm surprised that it didn't make it into the "Patriot Act"
I'm sorry, but to compare the public forum antics of a small room of people to the anti war demonstrations of Vietnam is completely off mark at best and complete idiocy at worst. And to make the assumption that the demonstration tactics of the Anti-War demonstrators actually prolonged the Vietnam conflict is another line down the same road. Don't forget that GREED prolonged the Vietnam conflict. Lyndon Johnson owned a large stake in Bell Helicopter so don't tell me that their wasn't a vested economic interest in prolonging the war effort. Along those lines the DRM and RIAA are also largely founded upon the promotion of GREED so if you want to make any associations why not try associating power hungry politicians of the 60's and the corrupt corporations of today.
"People who tell the truth don't have to remember much." Apologies for ripping off Twain
Truly great music is made without the thought of ever making any money on it. What everybody seems to be missing is the fact that a really great band will make great music regardless of whether or not they ever make a dime on it. The Moby's and Pearl Jam's of the world have made millions of dollars. My two bits isn't worth a whole lot to them. But it is worth some to the guys eeking it out at the corner bar on Tuesday's and Thursdays.
To know how decisions are made at google? How many people are involved in the development process and how many are involved in the hardware end of things. I look around at our current infrastructure and think that I need about five more hands. Our product development team seems to think that a project slipping six months just means they get more vacation time. How do you guys keep things on track and running?
I thought that umbilical blood stem cells were not of the same quality as those collected from fetal tissue and that was why they were not really being researched for use. (PC) Comments aside, am I wrong in this? Or was I just dreaming

I am not a physicist, I would never pretend to be one. But I am very very excited about the general level of discussion about this book. I am beginner level familiar with the terminologies and concepts that are being bounced around on the board about this topic and I have to say that I am overjoyed to hear people actually thinking about these things and coming up with points and counterpoints. Whether you like the book or not. I think stimulating minds to think in different directions is always a good thing.
There seems to have been a lot of talk about disloyalty to the company and how damaging that can be. I think what it boils down to is how loyal was the company being to you when they were so severely underpaying you. I have been with a couple of different companies that employed this practice and I was more than happy to turn a blind eye because I was learning something each time. What I ended up learning was that very few businesses really worry about their employees well being and are more concerned with the bottom line. Be very afraid of the bottom line because if it slips then so does your new raise and probably your whole position. If the company really cares about you though and they admit that they made a mistake in undervaluing your worth to the company and they really really mean it, then you're probably okay......yeah right

Our nation is dangerously low on bankruptcy filings. Help out while you still can!!

You'd think with an object that is the size of all the other Kuiper belt asteroids combined, somebody would have noticed it floating around out there.
In a related news quote from the LINEAR research team "Holy Shit, did you see the size of that rock floating out there!"

You wouldn't happen to know how to get rid of it do you?

Malthus? What about Jesus Christ? I think the doomsday machine started way before Malthus?

Like 20 bucks or something. Wouldn't matter anyway. Unless somebody starts setting the fines at 10 zero's MSFT won't even notice
