Hello. I've been working on the mediaconsole project which may fullfill your need. The sourceforge project page (http://www.sf.net/projects/mediaconsole/) describes it as "An interface that allows users to display media files (video, audio) in a simple manner. Designed for use on a tv (computer w/ tv out) with a remote control. Will support by default: mplayer, mpg321. Mp3, ogg, mpeg, avi, divx, dvd, cda will be supported."
It uses SDL for an interface, lirc (or a keyboard) for input, and mplayer for media output. It hasn't been actively developed over the last month, but I will be refocusing my attention to it soon. Let me know if you're interested and have any suggestions, and check out the CVS.
This can be used to reverse the recent trend in shark attacks. Build bathing suits with small speakers specially built for underwater use. Any nearby sharks will suddenly become preoccupied with 'other things'...
Wow, people are still trying to be politically correct in the 22nd century? One of the character is described as "Lieutenant Joe Mayweather: Helmsman. African American.". But then it goes on to state that he was raised on cargo ships in space. What part of this makes him an 'American'? Does 'America' still even exist as a nationality?
Sorry, these PC things really get to me.
At least this new series might bring a breath of fresh air into the franchise... Voyager is getting old... TNG is still the best IMHO

The last war that was declared by the US was World War II... so your definition of 'these days' goes back a lot farther than mine..
