Or perhaps its a new move from their marketing department to drum up support and users for their Internet distribution scheme. If audio CDs are such a problem, wouldn't you rather buy the tracks in a premade digital form to be sure it won't fry your hardware? I mean, why spend the time to rip it when it may blow your speakers and you can just pay a bit and get it pre-ripped straight from the company?
There are quite a few software companies that do this as well as Microsoft, mainly because the marketing department says the the promo has to happen on a date well before all of the bugs are worked out.
What you describe sounds very much like the small device they used as a map in a Red Planet(?). That was sweet; pull it out as wide as you need it, and since the display is actually holographic, you can see through it as well.
Yes, it may be obvious, but it is at least slightly interesting to see a numerical breakdown to confirm that you are in fact correct. Kinda like the Honeynet article yesterday. It is common sense not to enable services you don't need and not give your email to strange companies, but that doesn't mean that someone saying so is completely useless (unless its JonKatz).
I hope they don't leave out ICQ. I actually kind of suprised that support for it has not been added since AOL bought Mirabilis. I would think that AOL would want to incorporate the large community of ICQ users into their AIM pool for bragging / advertising purposes. I am glad they are finally working on it though, because running 3-4 different IM clients is getting to be rather of an annoyance.

The press IS following it, but they still have the Condit affair and other political news that the networks always put above "niche" stories. CNN at least had this article regarding the protests yesterday. I don't know whether they featured it in the broadcast version though (haven't had a chance to watch in a while).
It's not about the thief buying a copy. The record companies lost money because you didn't have to buy copies to replace what was stolen.
Now on he the fiction (or is it?):
You see, the RIAA sends out thieves to scout and break into cars with large numbers of CDs stored in them. The thief gets to keep the stereo while the CDs go back to the original record label so they can be repackages and resold back to you. (The
data corruption scheme being introduced is one result of this. They found that CDs that were "hashed to hell" couldn't be copied effectively.) This ensures a continual revenue stream. This is the TRUE reason why CDs must be protected from evil rippers. If you can backup your CD collection, you will have no need to re-purchase the CDs when the RIAA Thieves (TM) visit you, thus invalidating their entire revenue model.
Check out the first fan site listed in the abstract. It appears to have some more technical details of the composition/construction. Looks like a lot of Mylar and honeycomb composites.
If you think they are overacting, then you haven't been subjected to Robotica yet. Ahmet Zappa is probably the worst host I have ever seen. He is purely a distraction from any kind of educational value the show might otherwise have.
It would also be rather nice if they had real robots instead of glorified R/C cars (IMHO).
That's easy. Just implement a text filter for every post. If the post contains the words/phrases Microsoft, Bill Gates, or Steve Balmer but does not include references to sucking, the devil or evil incarnate, it is a troll and should therefore be deleted.
Also all references to Beowulf clusters if the story is not about them.
Any trolls that do not follow this pattern are usually entertaining or thought provoking.
I agree, they won't die out for a while. Just imagine your calculus or data structures text BSODing the night before finals, or not being able to read that Dickens classic because you haven't had time to upgrade the memory in your eBook quite yet.
Someone better start writing 'Space Travel for Dummies (TM)' and begin working on price schedules for an ACME rental on one of these. Wouldn't want to get left behind once it makes the 50m mark now, would we?
You don't always get what you pay for. I got better service with free ISPs such as BlueLight.com and Excite than I ever got with AOHell. Just use DUN instead of their client and -- voila! -- no more ads! Plus the connection speeds were often better with the free services, probably partially thanks to people like you who assumed that "free" meant "crappy".
I may pay "twice" but the ads on cable are usually somewhat entertaining as well. Most people I know can't wait to see what the ads during the Superbowl are like, and people actually visit AdCritic to watch ads again: VOLUNTARILY.
That is something that online advertising and payment schemes have not figured out. Almost all funding schemes online don't make it "fun or entertaining" to support the content. Until that happens, don't expect people to willingly pay for content.
P.S. I also don't have to wait 5-30 seconds when I change the channel on my TV for the new content to load.
Cool. My only question is what kind of damage did that do to your resale value? Unless you can find a fellow geek who wants a built-in rackmount, I would think it would be a bit of a downer when you try to sell your house.
Hallelujah!!! Eco-terrorists and other such nutcases should practice what they preach and go save the environment. By this I mean do their small part to ease overpopulation by removing themselves from the planet.
While I do believe that the environment should be protected, environmental groups often go about it in ways which do significant harm to civilization and the environment.
People also complain about how government is run by corporate masters and their lobbyists. There is a simple solution to this problem. If you really feel that strongly about it, don't vote for candidates who are corporate puppets and boycott those corporations with whose practices you do not agree. Corporations and politicians cannot survive without customers/political supporters.
By your definition, pr0n, S&M, beastiality, torture, murder, brutalization, etc would all qualify as fine art. There are those some who view demented and perverted forms of expression as "beautiful" (just look at the lead character in The Cell, though he does not go nearly so far in as some). You may want to rethink what you define as art.

Hell yes. It's not at all fair to hippie anarchists to compare them to those engineering-types who are responsible for the Internet.
