No, no, no. This is the MPAA, Jack Valenti's horde.
Totally different from Hillary Rosens' horde.

So you'll see Jerry Bruckheimer (sic) in the add, saying how his $500 million movie coulda make $700 million if those pesky kids hadnt put it on Kazaa...

  2. Re:Sun is simply mean-spirited on My Visit to SCO · · Score: 1

Umm, mean-spirited? If Sun had, lets say, a manufacturing flaw in the e-cache on its CPUs and IBM started calling all of Sun's customers saying, "Come to Power4, we dont have these problems" is that mean-spirited? No, IBM would NEVER do that

    Its called capitalism.

If you checked out the campaign in detail, Sun is saying this: "We spent ALOT of money making sure our OS is free from these things. Come on over." They are not banging Linux/OSS. They ARE banging on one of their Big 3 competitors.

  3. Why the Hating on Sun? on My Visit to SCO · · Score: 3, Insightful

Its not like Sun is saying "Dont use Linux/BSD/OSS"

You havent seen Sun say "We arent doing Madhatter anymore" or "We're not going to be reselling Redhat anymore"

They are saying, "Use Solaris instead of AIX because we have all the rights to Solaris" What, you think IBM wouldnt be doing the same thing if SCO came after Sun? Jeez, nearly makes you think that /. editors have something against Sun....

  4. Not exactly fair comparisons on Linux TCO: Less Than Half The Cost of Windows · · Score: 5, Interesting

If they want to do TCO of apples to apples, maybe they should have used Sun LX-50 x86 box, instead of their Enterprise class machines. There are feature sets in that class of machine (eg domaining, redundant hardware, hotswap etc) that are just not available in an x86 box. The cost of those features greatly inflates the TCO for Solaris.

  5. Re:Sun support weak ? on IT Trends In and Out of Downturn · · Score: 1

Sun/IBM field support is good, but I believe that the article is referring to IBM Global Services/Sun Microsystems Professional Services, when they were referring to the "services" aspect. IBM GS is the 400lb gorrilla in that space, while SunPS is a much smaller organization. They both employ skilled professionals, but IBM GS gets much more play because IBM realizes that hardware is commoditized (sic) and that services are the future.

  7. We did it at Howard University. on Student-Run IT System Just Makes Sense · · Score: 1
Before the Universities IT department got its act together (some say it NEVER got its act together) the students of the Computer Learning and Design Center (CLDC) basically ran the University.

We provided mail, web page storage, primary DNS, ftp services, NTP, and basically did tech support for the entire university. Hell, we had 7000 users email on one FreeBSD box, and it had uptimes of about 400 days. It was a great environment for learning REALLY quickly the concepts of good uptime, customer service, and never messing with a production machine :)

What sucked about it was the REAL IT dept. hated our guts, so we would never get the resources we deserved. (that BSD machine was a P133... in fact it still is) Hell, one summer we had to go on strike so that they would pay us. And we STILL have better quality of service than they do now.

But its the GREATEST learning experience that you could get. In real world jobs, I was way ahead of most of the guys, since I had already dealt with most of the problems already.
