  3. firefox on Two-Finger Scrolling For Older Mac Laptops · · Score: 4, Informative

firefox, by default, interprets horizontal scrolling as the forward/back buttons. this is very annoying with two-finger scroll, as it will jump pages without warning. after trial and error i figured out how to disable this:

in firefox go to about:config (type it in address field)
    change mousewheel.horizscroll.withnokey.action to 0
    change mousewheel.horizscroll.withnokey.numlines to 1

  5. price protection on Apple Updates iBook Line With G4 Processor · · Score: 5, Informative

having just recieved my 900 MHz G3 iBook in the mail 4 days ago, I was pretty pissed to see that Apple unveiled a new line of iBooks.

However, I called Apple, and it turned out I qualified for some kind of price protection. I am not allowed to return my iBook and get a new one (since my iBook was "custom built" by having extra RAM and an Airport card added), but they are going to credit my Visa $190.

Hope this helps anyone else who just bought an iBook. CALL APPLE!!! they may have some money for you....

  6. i read this book too on Linux Network Administrator's Guide, 2nd Edition · · Score: 5, Informative

I have this book as well, and do not share the reviewer's enthusiasm for it, on several points.

    1. It is old (2000, original edition is 1995) and vast sections of the book are completely useless.

    2. It is too concise. The sections on NAT and Firewall are vague, and i had to consult additonal resources just to figure out how to get it to work. I had the same problems with the DNS chapter and the NIS chapter. This book gives enough info to let you know what something is, but often not enough to serve as a useful reference. The authors encourge you to buy additional o'reilly books if you want to know more, which is annoying.

    3. Important stuff is missing. SSH? nothing. SAMBA? nothing. Entire chapters dedicated to obsolete technologies like PPP, SLIP, IPX, and UUCP? lots.

    4. This book did not need four chapters on how to setup a Usenet news server. What a waste!

Although I was a newbie when I first read it, and learned a lot, i would recommend people look elsewhere. This book is simply too out-of-date. Half of it should be omitted, and the other half expanded so as to become usable.

  7. Re:First! on Et Tu Brute? EMI to Sue AOL Over Musical Infringement · · Score: 1

You can't blame the TV networks for recycling that music. James Horner, the composer who wrote it, recycled it himself in his soundtrack for The Wrath of Khan.

  8. Pacific Bell DSL on A Study on Regional DSL and Cable Speeds? · · Score: 1

I work for an outsource company that does technical support for Pacific Bell DSL, and I think this applies to any Southwestern Bell DSL. (the ASI/SBC/Swbell conglomerate) At PacBell, the current 'normal' bandwidth is 1.5 Mbps down and 384 Kbps up. However, depending on the phone line conditions, they sometimes have to cap the line to 768/384 or even 384/128. This is usually done for people who are near the edge of the 17,500 ft range or have bridge taps/load coils on their line. I think there are plans to offer higher bandwidth (at a higher price) to those whose phone lines can support it, but I'm very low on the totem pole and don't know any specifics. I understand the G.Lite standard for DSL calls for a 1.5 bitrate, don't know whether Pacbell uses that or not...
