  2. Astroturf... on Cellphone as Virtual Mouse, Keyboard · · Score: 0, Troll

Not entirely sure about that. The submitter doesn't really have anything to do with HEM. Googling his email address will give you a page with the following:

    "Anil Madhavapeddy
I am currently a PhD candidate at the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory, in the Systems Research Group. Current research interests include improving operating systems security, audio networking, and creating more sensible compilers. In addition, I enjoy developing free software, primarily the secure OpenBSD operating system."

So why do you think it's Astroturf ?

  3. Ireland didn't ban e-voting on Evoting in the News · · Score: 5, Informative

Ireland didn't ban e-voting. We merely postponed it. We've already had e-voting machines used in an election two years ago (in a few consituencies on a trial basis). This summer, the Irish government tried to introduce e-voting in every county, and was met with protests. It was taken completely by surprise, and set up a commission to look into the matter and report back with a recommendation. I'm pretty sure that this commission was just set up to reassure the "Luddite" public, and tell them that everything was ok.

To everyone's surprise, the commission said that there wasn't enough time to guarantee the accuracy and security of the machines, and that their introduction should be postponed until such things could be guaranteed.

So, it hasn't been banned, just postponed.

Is it possible he counted 780,000 loc because he was including libraries and component code etc. etc. The article is badly written and doesn't give a true representation of his work. He claimed on Irish TV that he had written a client-server pair. I'm still fairly suspicious myself, but it *is* possible.

  7. Illegal Laws on Cringely On Civil Disobedience · · Score: 2, Interesting

IANAL and more importantly, I am not an American, but aren't there rules about passing frivolous laws that will be broken by the majority of "ordinary" people ? Such laws make "ordinary" people lawbreakers and desensitise them to criminality, causing them to lose respect for other, more worthy, laws.

So it seems to me that Cringely is suggesting thay you demonstrate to your legal system that the DMCA is just such a frivolous law.

Sounds like a good idea, but difficult to co-ordinate...

  8. Re:wow the British comment... on BT Pushing Hyperlink Patent · · Score: 1

Can a patent be rejected after it has already been accepted, and been in place for years ? Surely the whole point of getting the patent is that it establishes your right to the ip and once it is granted, you don't have to continue proving your right to it over and over (IANAL, BTW).

If this is so, then they should make it a lot harder for a patent to be accepted in the first place. I doubt that BT would have gotten their patent originally if anyone had checked it properly first day.

Interesting point, I've always wondered where lawyers find their job satisfaction. It's not like they're doctors(healing), engineers(building), or even business men (who, it could be argued, provide employment).

Umm, apart from counting their money, obviously. That's probably very satisfying.

Hmmm, does this mean that it doesn't have to go to court ? After all, BT...with all its expensive lawyers, is convinced it can win. So what's the point in even trying to defend against it.

    Very dodgy point of view...
