The one thing I really want from a phone/PDA combo is to have checkboxes for appointments to turn the ringer off, and back on when the event is over. I usually forget and leave my ringer on untill someone else's phone rings during class, and then turn the ringer off, forget, and leave it in vibrate until I miss a call. It's not _that_ big a deal because nobody ever calls me, but it would be a nice feature anyways;-)
just had a thought- once we get these cards in place, and monkey boy starts ww3, am I going to get flagged and arrested trying to cross into canada? A little anonymity can be a good thing in the face of a sufficiently messed up govt.
The tragic destruction and loss of life from tuesdays attacks was terrible, but it's this aftermath of hatred and paranoia which terrifes me. By turning Americans against each other and scaring us out of our freedom, these terrorists will have us do more damage to ourselves than they ever could.
Oh but we have. Picture. We set one of these up with a mini wireless camera and a bunch of LEDs for headlights. Granted it's not the most powerful thing in the world, but the car we had been using was too tall to fit under some of the conduits in the ceiling. With the addition of a skid plate to prevent filpping and some track tensioners to prevent the tracks from falling off, we managed to pull a string across the ceiling tiles, then use the string to pull any coax or other cables we wanted. And after about 5 hours to get this all working right, we probably saved a good 30 minutes of cable pulling hassel;-)
Yet you really can't understand science unless you understand the math that backs it up.
This is in fact true of almost any quantifiable field- Science (there is only one, right?), finance, computing, engineering, etc. There are of course human endeavors which do not require math (ie leadership, art, literature, and other pursuits based on people skills or creativity), but these have been pretty well mastered by various people over the past few centuries. But now that we are becoming a technical society, and mathematics is basically just 'the way to quantatively describe things', people will have to suck it up and learn some math.
I have to concur that a course on teaching science to children is not a serious science course. I can't say anything about that particular course, but in general something like that prepares you to pronounce all the words you'll need for the lecture and answer basic questions which commonly crop up. Just because a teacher knows that atoms have electrons, protons, and neutrons, doesn't mean they can begin to explain how atomic energy works (arguably an important topic for the populace to know about). It wasn't until I got to college that I was actually taught _anything_ about all those other subatomic particles that my public school textbooks mentioned in one sentence at the end of the chapter for completeness.
And for what it's worth, my elementry school did have specialized science teachers who came in once or twice a week and taught some kind of science (although granted this was in a rich white suburb, so it was probably not because the 'normal' teachers didn't know any science, which in fact they probably did because it was a RWS.)
Actually, from having talked to the people working on the Triana project, one important function would be to gather global warming data. As long as we still have people who "don't believe in global warming" and refer to scientists as "environweenies," I think it's important to gather enough information to prove that it's a real problem.
Wasn't Terminal Man by Michael Chrichton about a guy who has a pacemaker thing in his brain to snap him out of bad mental states? And then he learns how to trigger it at will and wigs out and kills people? Gotta love it when scary sci fi starts coming true...
He gave up his own infinite life for our salvation. How are we to meet him in Heaven if we've got these 'infinate life rings' keeping us here on Earth..
So nobody should want to live forever, because then he couldn't go to heaven to be with Jesus, right? Well, if being with Jesus is all you want, why don't you just KILL YOURSELF RIGHT NOW. No waiting, no being kept here on this lame-ass Earth. In fact, it's probably not fair to the rest of the people on the planet to have modern medicine and all that crap keeping them here on Earth. Let's KILL EVERYBODY!!! Then we can all be with Jesus right now! YAY!!!
Seriously, though, the idea behind having things like the first amendment and the internet which foster free exchange of ideas and information was to foster the free exchange of GOOD ideas and USEFUL, CORRECT information. So until you have some of that to share, please keep it between you and the voices in your head. Thanks.
First off, althought this really isn't the place for this discussion, I realize this disucssion is more important than the place and time it takes place. That, and the fact that I wanted to reply to a few parts of this thread are why I didn't mod it down.
So then:
Human Immunodeficiency Virus does cause AIDS (see centers for disease control http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/pubs/cause.htm ), but there are treatments which can delay the development of HIV into AIDS for a long time, if not indefinitely. However, you have to know you have HIV in order to get the treatments, which is why you HAVE to tell anybody you've had sexual (or other potentially transmissive) contact with, ESPECIALLY your bf. No matter how painful it may seem at the time, it's infinitely better than not telling them. If you care about any of the people you may have put at risk, you'll tell them immeadiately. One of them gave it to you, and may be continuing to spread it without knowing. I feel like I'm all alone here and I just don't know what to do
You're not. There are plenty of ways to get information and support. Nationial institutes of health might be a good place to start (http://www.niaid.nih.gov/publications/help/hiv.ht m),or ask your doctor. Maybe I would be better off just saving myself all the suffering that is coming...
Never. There's always a better option. Treatments can help you live _many years_. Many people live full and productive lives with HIV. Talk to someone and get help.
FYI, rabbits don't get trapped in headlights like deer do. (I have empirical evidence concerning rabbits, the part about deer I'm assuming.) However, the video for "Rabbit in Your Headlights" by U.N.K.L.E. is friggin cool.
I use a dvorak keyboard, and although I made the switch in college when I had some extra time to spend learning, it really doesn't take that long to switch. I touchtype in dvorak much better than qwerty (more due to my lack of qwerty ability than superior dvorak ability), so i simply reset the keymap on the computers I use. Most modern computers let you switch layouts with a simple key combo (like [left alt]+[shift] or [command]+[option]+[space], so allowing people to change over needn't cost more than a few hours of slightly slower productivity, (which I've more than made up for since). What I really want, though, is an intelligent keyboard driver that looks at the gibberish I type when I sit down at a computer with the wrong keymap, figures out that that would look much better in dvorak, and retroactively change the characters.
i use the ir interface to connect my palm3e to my timeport, and then get a ppp connection through earthlink. (unfortunately cingular charges extra for the privelidge of sending data over their network. bastards) I can download email and surf the web this way, but i haven't tried syncing yet. i have the network connection type set to ppp,..., query dns, auto ip address, and the modem settings to sandard, 9600, low, auto, AT&FX4, touchtone. theres a little thing called irenhanc or something like that which redirects the palm's serial comm from the cradle port to the ir port (i could use this to hot sync to imacs, before they took the irda ports off them. more bastards.) i'd think you could use those modem settings with the modem sync option to do what you want.

i think its time to change my sig...
I think genentic engineers shlould be working on a genome patch that disables the "wisdom teeth" gene.
