  1. Nice to see on Scrounging for Fun and Profit · · Score: 1

I'm glad to see resourcefulness acknowledged by the slashdotters. It's a nice break from the Microsoft whining. Maybe we should give this guy some sort of award for teaching, something like the "First Annual MacGyver Award" or something...

  2. drastic but smart on Dan Gillmor on WinXP · · Score: 1

I like your idea. The government needs to do the same thing they did with AT&T, break them apart and develop standards. It would not be that hard to make a set of standards so that computers running different OS's could run the same software. The OS would have to have certain featurs and then they would be at liberty to add additional things for competition. I like the idea though, break up the company and let some competition come through.

  3. The article says it all on Code Red Reporting That Doesn't Suck · · Score: 1

Finally, someone rational talks about code red. I really enjoyed reading the useful information that was in this article, even though there was some babble to go with it. Now I just want to know where the other news sources got the "billions of dollars of damage" information from. Maybe this was all just a big scheme by the government to hide a bunch of money going into secret research projects. You know, like the $20k toilet and the $50k hammer...

I don't know, I just thought that was funny, for more information on MSN, just call Qwest... seems like they're giving people the runaround before they even call...
  5. It's about time on Academic Journal on Computer Games · · Score: 1

I think this is a good opportunity for the enhancement of video games. For my senior project in college, I made a "human frogger" where a person moved around a room, tracked by digital cameras, and had to interact with enemies on a big TV screen (all done in Visual C.) This was a challenge for me because it not only had to be a smooth running game but it also had to interact in real time with massive amounts of input from the cameras. Anyway my point is that it would have been nice to have such a forum/journal as this to look to for advice, or maybe even contribute my final results to. I hope this journal results in better gaming for everyone.

We need more things like this to further commercial involvement in space. I love anything that takes the power away from the government and puts it into the hands of the people. It sounds like this guy knows what he's doing (from the article) and I wish him success. Even if he blows up and becomes a high tech fireworks show, it will still be an acheivement of bravery like none shown in recent times.

Yes, Pi comes up in all sorts of places, ALL SORTS OF PLACES WHERE THE CIRCUMFERENCE OF A CIRCLE IS AT ISSUE. Dumbass. Waveforms... sine waves, HALF CIRCLES. Angle measurements... 90 degrees = 1/2 Pi. Again, in all of these computations you never go past two or three significant digits. I took a great deal of math in college, came out with a math minor, and most of my professors said just use 3.14. My point is just that in calculations the decimal places lose value exponentially after the millionths place or so. Think about your MP3's like you pointed out: if one sound sample is converted over as .00000000000000000000001 unit of pitch higher, will you know? Not at all!

  12. What's the Law Say? on Sony Sells Defective, Damaging CDs in Eastern Europe · · Score: 1

Aren't there laws in the US about selling intentionally defective goods and not advertising the fact that they have been made defective? Giving something a fancy name and calling it a security measure should not protect these companies from having to face questions about their product quality and safety. If this latest thing is true, the CD's can damage equipment, then something has to be done, it's absolutely ridiculous for companies to sell CD's that are intentionally messed up and damaging to our players. If anyone knows what the actual law is on this matter, please inform the rest of us. I know there is the Better Business Bureau that can protect consumers from malicious acts like this, but is there any real legal action that can be taken?

First of all, it's not proven anyway, and second of all, do these people think that Pi is the secret to life or something? Really folks, it's just a number, and since we have no practical means of measuring anything past the... oh... say... 1,000,000,000ths digit, why bother?

I mean we've been talking a lot lately about MP3's and piracy... well think about this: Your content is sent out electronically to someone's computer, and before it is displayed, someone else "adds" to it, potentially (and probably) changing the message or theme of your work. To me that sounds like a violation of not only the right to free speech but also the right to protect your ideas. Anyone else feel this way?

OK, I'm not an expert, but as I understand things, any form of evidence gathering that is not covered under a search warrant MUST give the individual the expectation of privacy. In other words, they can't use what you say in confession against you in court, but if they get a warrant they can search through your private things in your house. That's how the FBI taps phones, they get a warrant from the judge first. The warrant names a specific person, and the FBI can only use the evidence against that person. I think that if the FBI gets a warrant to use the keyboard bug first then that's fine, but without a warrant it is a definite invasion of privacy.
