If they took the sneaky way out, we would start seeing commercials with odd lengths. 22 seconds here, 43 seconds there, and if it got annoying enough, people would just deal with it rather than skip 11 seconds of Nash Bridges..

  3. Re:Clue me in on MP3.com 'Subscriber Service' · · Score: 1

Lots of excellent electronica/techno/trance type music available to browse, which commercial radio completely ignores: 303Infinity, Astral Projection, Bassic, PPK, and many others.

On the more mainstream genre, Flickerstick is one of the bands in VH1's "Bands on the Run" series, and their music is surprisingly good.

I have been offering this file on my gnutella node for the last 3 or 4 days under the name "(alternate)cdfs.zip". As of now, several people have downloaded it, so it may be spreading on the network, and be more available to anyone on gnutella.

  5. Re:What about us programmers... on Piezoelectric Shoe Power · · Score: 1

Actually, here I think you're better off designing a device to harness energy found naturally in methane gas. Think about it: If you're sitting all day on a chair, your body will generate a finite amount of methane gas, normally released uselessly into the air. If a device, perhaps a sort of anal probe, was designed to stick up from the center of the chair, a programmer could comfortably settle him or herself into the seat and work for hours. All electronic devices in the cubicle could then be powered by the output of a small methane-driven generator.

Programmers benefit from the small amount of sexual stimulation of the anal sphincter, as well as the improved security of being firmly planted in the chair with reduced likelyhood of sliding off the seat.

Corporations benefit from having employees remain in their cubes, hopefully producing productive code, as opposed to being engaged in such non-productive behavior as going to lunch, using the bathroom, and walking around.

    This has potential!

  8. Re:Electronic Music on Canadian Recording Industry Claims Drop in Sales · · Score: 1

Another aspect here is that electronic music generally has no vocals or sampled vocals, which results in no visible personality for the record labels to market. The recording industry won't promote it if there's no one to show off at the MTV Music Video Awards/Blockbuster Awards/Grammy Awards/etc. Marketing machines work better if you have highly visible people ala Britney Spears/N-Sync to promote.

Electronic music is getting more popular all the time, but good luck finding it on the radio. Personally, I like mp3.com's current distribution model- lots of electronic music there (Astral Projection, Bassic, etc.) I hope Vivendi doesn't ruin it (but they probably will).

Go download your favorite Gnutella-based client program, connect, and do a search for the porn of your choice. It's so easy to amass gigabytes of mpegs that it's a wonder people will actually pay to visit x-rated websites. There are also centralized filesharing programs (FileNavigator) which will allow you to trade video with others who are also connecting to various OpenNap servers.

    Very informative peer-to-peer links:

Way too many "All your base are belong to.." Time to move "zig" away from that laser-guided bomb.
Detailed analysis of those PS2 Beowulf Clusters currently in use by Iraqi military.
Rambus suing all parties involved for violating patents on DDR-SDRAM technology used in guidance systems.
RIAA threatens to bomb Belgrade again because the Serbs just can't keep their citizens from using Napster.
President of China, Jiang Zemin, suffers coronary after being forced to look at goatse.cx. Chinese Communist Party declares war on ICANN.
Refugees asked to log on to Rotten.com to identify pieces of loved ones.
50,000 CueCat "marital aids" sent to US Congress both as protest and as silly publicity to try to keep company afloat.
1st Amendment seen as violation of DMCA, repealed by Congress at behest of RIAA, MPAA for "benefit of war effort", and to "protect the children".
Outlook email worm takes out enemy high command, US Theater Command scratches collective head wondering what terrorist cell these "31337 d00ds" that "h4x0rs & 0wnz0rz the w0rld" belong to. Enemy command advised to download latest IE Service Pack.

It's not much use unless people start using it, but it opens your eyes as to how the system works. ICANN only has authority if people let them have it. Who said the internet needs to be forced into a top-down design model, anyway?
