It seems to usually be bad drivers, or often lower-level software like virus scanners that f*cks things up... Defective RAM is another common problem that gets blamed on Windows (DOS runs fine... but only uses 640Kb of it...)
At work, I was rebooting 98 at least 3 times a day - but had a dual-monitor system, lots of resource-hungry apps open (Outlook2K, Photoshop, Vis Studio, and some in-house tools)
Since installing Win2K about a week ago, I've not had a lock-up or BSOD yet...
But I've not got the particlarly crippling virus scanner used by the company on all machines installed yet... Then I'm fairly sure my P3-667/256Kb/Geforce256 will behave more like a 16Mb 486 with an overheating problem...
>>What's the difference between a hammer and this tool?
>The difference is that the primary purpose of this tool is to circumvent copyright protection.
No. Not 'copyright protection', but 'copy prevention'.
Anyway, what's the primary purpose of a gun? (Obviously, murder isn't anywhere near as harmful to corporations as copyright infringement?)
But more importantly, will the primary purpose of GCC for Linux be found to be illegal, when MSVC++ is perfectly OK. Because obviously, Linux GCC is used by evil hackers....
These days it's all about licences, schedules, budgets, and contracts.
Quality is regularly neglected. As is fun.
And with huge team sizes on many projects, there's not that much scope for individual creativity:(
(yep, I'm in the industry at the moment, and planning to get out ASAP... I just can't convince myself to buy/wear a suit/tie...) -------
If we can hear it, we can record it!
Encryption is futile!

Have you looked at RealPlayer recently?
What began as some neat streaming technology has been turned into one of the ugliest, most bloated pieces of 'adware'/'spamware' around
Even after opting out of several screenfuls of shite, it still goes and installs its and plasters it's shortcut icon all over your system...
And it has a nasty load-on-startup launcher thing - it's all the crap like this that helps maintain the slowness of an average Windows install...

One word:
Guns
The DivX downloads dies a few hours ago.
The site has now been updated... now displays 'Closed for legal reasons', with a BBC test page...
Shame... Suppose I'll just have to borrow a VHS copy from a mate at work...
A new Sarah McLachlan album this year?... I doubt it :(
There's the remixes CD out next month, but I don't expect to see a proper new album till 2002...
