  1. It was fuel lines.. on Updated Information On Columbia Shuttle Tragedy · · Score: 1

It wasnt the fuel lines that they were concerned about having cracks - it was the 'fuel line liners'.

'From the article linked from the 'update':

The liners don't hold pressure so a cracked liner doesn't mean any liquid hydrogen or liquid oxygen is leaking, said NASA spokesman James Hartsfield.

But there is concern that any debris from a crack could work its way into a firing engine, which could lead to disaster.

---> The cracks are not in the propellant lines themselves, Hartsfield said. --

We dont need to get the 'anti-NASA' public all worked up thinking that they [ NASA ] let a faulty shuttle go up..

    You need to check out

    http://www.allmusic.com

Its a crazy cool music database webstite where you can do queries on artist, title, album, etc. One of the other features is a 'similar to other artists' category, where you are given examples of artists which sound like the artist from your query results.

    Check it out!

  3. Did Apple ever pay back Microsoft ?? on Apple Win32 to OS X Porting Guide · · Score: -1, Offtopic

Does anyone remember a few years ago when Apple was almost dead, and Microsoft gave them a bunch of cash?

Did Apple ever pay them back?

  4. Re:I don't think so. on With XML, is the Time Right for Hierarchical DBs? · · Score: 4, Insightful

I don't agree - look at LDAP. The benefits for LDAP'fying services is clear. With a hierarchial database, specific queries can target a subset of the entire database, without the over head of having seperate tables and/or database for varying information. For keeping track of 'real world' objects: People, Printers, IPS, etc.. the advantage is that the system used to organize them is similar to the actual grouping going on. Managers have employees 'underneath' them. Its basically taking the organizational concepts used for filesystems and applying them to database design. I havent done any performance testing LDAP vs. SQL for similar schema setup, but from what I understand one of the other benefits is fast lookups. Sounds like a good project! To implement databases in both LDAP and SQL and measure the performance of similar queries!! :)

  5. Mac OS Apple business plan rant on Another Look At OS X · · Score: 1

Jeez.. lets see it took um.. 'like until the next MILLENIUM to incorporate such standard OS features as memory protection and preemptive multitasking when these concepts have been mainstream for a decade.. Hello?? And now DVD support is questionable when DVD writers are becoming familiar?? What?? How many times has the MacOS been given the fairytale story of an OS && API which will suddenly make every win/unix developer run towards the magical fruit.. How many APIs have there _been_ the last few years?!? Christ Apple.. sticking a colorful case on a machine does not an efficient (or even typical) machine make.. I started on Apple.. and spent many a long night, in my youth, learning applesoft && assembler - taming the machine on the frontline of available hardware.. And for such a fore-runner and inspiration to the PC world; - to take so long to come up to speed iwith the times is frustrating. Now my apple2+ hangs on wall - a 21rst century form of art, to a 20th century monarch. Get up to speed.. drink some Jolt or something Steve!! ;)

The freedom of speech has almost nothing to do here - it is eclipsed by the extent of the wrong being done. If this site's content is the truth, they should be shut down. I looked at the pic from the link off slashdot: While your average 20-something MALE tech geak might be able to handle looking at something like that, there are alot of people on the net who that might cause extreme emotional discomfort. People who torture animals in this manner are evil and sick - period. While the right to express yourself is paramount, it doesnt mean you should run out and think of every way you can to shock people. Marilyn Manson is a prime example of a retard who seems to follow this idea. And it is far worse to stuff kittens in jars - 'duh - hello!?!? Quite frankly, I think you have to be one cold son of a bitch not to agree.. Our govenment spends alot more money, on alot stupid'er stuff than this: Shut the sick f**kers down.

  7. How Bush will affect IT and the Country on Bush And The Tech Nation · · Score: 1

'Easy now.. Although Bush seems to exhibit some traits which certainly seem overly conservative, theres no reason to exacerbate this manner of thinking - one man alone is going to throw the country into an 'Orwellian state of censored media - and how do expect the Republican party to ever grow in this area, when you stereotype them as such? I'm a Libertarian, and had grave distaste with our government during the Reagan/Bush era - and the policies and attitude of our leaders. But that doesnt mean its going to happen that way again, and I dont see reason to get fearful that it will. Give the younger Bush a chance, and maybe some of the ideals you wish to be more pronounced will get more respect with this new establishment. I am optimistic about the new decade, and the younger Bush.

  8. Offshore Hosting on Can Web Sites Go Offshore For Free Speech? · · Score: 1

I sympathize with you.. In addition I am awfully nervous about the recent changes to the Internic's polocy regarding domain names. I feel I own my domain. It would be nice again to feel that I 'own' a peice of cyberspace, and to be assured that content I post there, within my own judgement, isn't going to be censored or abolished because of a different point of view.. I thought that that was one of the principal virtues upon which the Internet was built..
