DVD Audio will be doomed - yes. Protection from digital copying is a reason one. Not a standard format but very large number of different formats under the common umbrella of DVD Audio - reason two, you don't know what the hell you're dealing with. Multichannel instead of two-channels is a reason three. Audiophiles frawn on multi-channel technology. I'm not the one, but I do agree that two speakers are better than 5.1. Personally I believe SACD has a better chance as 'audiophile format'. As to the rest of us, simple humans, I believe that good remastering makes CD fairly adequate. Just compare the original and remastered edition of Kind of Blue.
being involved in providing quality of services over INTERNET, I can tell you that eventually you'll see freebee as a 'best-effort services' with no metering and with download time 'forever'. There will be some guaranteed services for which you have to pay, and those will be metered, one way or another.
This isn't easy. A lower tier ISPs are connected to the higher tier ISPs etc etc. There are very few top-tier ISPs (like UUNET, PSINET, AT&T), and those folks would rather work with government than with you. Of course if you have several billion dollars you can start building your own upper-tier ISP (take a look at NEXTLINK, for instance).
The bottom line is that it is not sufficient just to have a right of free speach. There got to be resources provided so you can exercise that right. Otherwise the right of free speach would be few a few billioners.
don't want to sound too paranoid, but the whole situation reminds me the 'invasion of body snatchers'. they look like humans, in fact they are brainwashed zombies. Religion, my ass. Just an organization to brainwash people and make money.
didn't you use a 'complain letter generator' for this posting? Well, I did, so here is the follow-up:
I want to share with you a few of the tentative conclusions I've reached regarding Mr. Paul Vixie's publicity stunts. And I stress the word "tentative," because the subject of what motivates Paul is tricky and complex. What follows is a series of remarks addressed to the readers of this letter and to Paul himself. When we lay out some ideas and interpretations that hold the potential for insight, we are not only threading our way through a maze of competing interests; we are weaving the very pattern of our social fabric. He can pervert any established ideology. The quest to feature simplistic answers to complex problems is the true inner kernel of Paul's philosophy, insofar as this figment of a libidinous brain can be designated a "philosophy", and besides, Paul expresses only the noblest intentions, singing praises to the value of community even as he enacts policies that promote promiscuity and obscene language. I don't mean to imply that there's a contradiction between his simultaneous condemnation of worthless thieves and his imposition of brutal imperialism, but it's true, nonetheless.
His tracts are popular among horny hatemongers, but that doesn't mean the rest of us have to accept them. One thing is certain: Paul can out-reason the most flippant lowbrows you'll ever see but not anyone else. In such a brief letter as this, I certainly cannot refute all the tirades of hopeless bums, but perhaps I can brush away some of their most deliberate and flagrant politics. Admittedly, he is doing the very thing for which he criticizes others. But that's because he has made some very dangerous assumptions about dim-witted dorks. Ethnocentrism is not confined to any specific era, culture, or country. No wonder that I suspect that people who work with Paul's cronies discredit themselves.
It would be a mistake to believe that the Universe belongs to Paul by right. Now that I've had time to think about his antics, my only question is this: Why? Why fan the flames of McCarthyism into a planet-spanning inferno? In the past, when I complained that he was attempting to put increased disruptive powers in salacious blockheads' hands, I was told that I was just being immature. But nowadays, people realize that even his horoscope says he's bleeding-heart. Let me mention again that I maintain that my slurs regarding grungy champions of deceit, lies, theft, plunder, and rapine, while far from complete, will suggest the kind of politics and policies that are needed to restore good sense to this important debate. I'd like to finish with a quote from a private e-mail message sent to me by a close friend of mine: "In times of economic, social, or political crisis, small groups that inject Mr. Paul Vixie's lethal poison into our children's minds and souls suddenly gain a mass following".
Just from the top of my head, two instances I remember quite well.
The first one took place about the time Gigabit Ethernet specs were close to completion. The e-mail I saw with my own eyes was from one of the highly respect market research group. I din't save the whole thing, unfortunately. But its subject was something like this: Gigabit Ethernet is a horrible mistake. We have to explain all our clients that ATM is the only correct technology above 100Mbps Ethernet... Or something like this, I don't remember exact wording. I don't think I should comment on this.
Another case took place about a couple of years ago. Once again, I was there. Few market analysts were discussing the fugure of portable computing, especially with respect of integrating mobile phones with PDA. The point they have made was 'The future is Windows/CE as a platform'. Someone asked them 'And what about a PalmTop?' Their answer was something like 'We did an extensive market research and came to the conclusion that PalmTop has no future, and Windows CE is the only viable platform'. At the very moment I remember thinking 'Suckers! Extensive research, my ass. They've simply decided that 'you won't make any mistake with Microsoft'. What a bunch of idiots'.

It's funny you've mentioned it. I've recently visited the seminar on xDSL technologies, and one of the topics was VDSL (very high speed DSL) suitable for movie distribution. Since distance limitations are rather serious, the idea is to put the aggregation point (sort of DSLAM) somewhere into the basement of a large appartment building, or appartment complex, or campus types of environment, and from there distribute the material over the existing phone wires. It is being implemented on vary large scale in Hong-Kong (and I forgot where else)
Yet I do not believe DVD is dead. Some people like network-based distribution, some like to have a small collection, or rent, it all depends... Eventually DVD will be superceeded by HDVD but this won't happen for at least 2-3 years, may be more.
'We will fight against the illegal software, blah blah blah...'. This is soooo pathetic! The fact is that very small percentage of the users would be doing 'illegal copying', but those surely would go to the furthest possible extent to break through all the locks. The entertainment industry is both paranoid and stupid.
Now I've been reading of digital watermarks on DVD-Audio, which, in fact, are not entirely transparent and somewhat degrade the quality of sound. Don't you think the future of DVD-Audio is sort of written on a wall?
for those who *really* need T1, this is a good price. for those who mostly download from INTERNET, either xDSL or cable modem is more appropriate choice and cheaper as well.
For once I agree. Combination of MD technology and MP3 compression scheme would have been an ideal solution, at least till flash memory becomes less expensive.
New MD2 format holds I believe 750MB. Sony doesn't use it for music for the time being, but I bet they will. 750MB would be a killer.
However Sony has their own agendas, I don't think they are very excited about MP3 in general. If we are going to see the MD/MP3 combo, most likely this won't be from Sony (but if Sony holds they patent, can anyone do it at all?)
