The word he puts in quote, (presumably meaning a direct quote from the article) only occurs once in the article, and it doesn't say that all science is dependant on CS, somehow or otherwise, he simply says it is increasingly dependant. He then goes on to site examples of recent major scientific breakthroughs which would have been unimaginable without CS. He doesn't say physicists are doing code, with the possible exception of the Larry Ellison bit at the end, and that was just a journalistic flourish. It's a god damned editorial, for chrissakes, and it's not a bad one.
Try reading it.

The headline was just an eye grabber, and the Slashdot submitter managed to grossly misinterpret the article's intent. The purpose of the article was to suggest that science is a great deal more dependant on computers now than it ever has been in the past, primarily due to the availability of extremely fast machines.
Worth mentioning that the NYT article was drastically better written and better researched than any link to somebody else's article that I've ever found on Slashdot.
Don't bash NYT just because people have no attention span.

I dunno... Doom was the first game I ever played where I was genuinely scared. Quake didn't scare me as much as Doom. Actually, Quake wasn't really very frightening at all. The levels descending into pitch black at points, it was all very terrifying. This, for me, became the game's allure. Yes, I agree with the point that all this "dark edginess" has gotten out of hand, an idea which Old Man Murray's staff has widely publicized, but Doom is an original. Doom did it first and Doom did it well. From the looks of it, they're doing it extraordinarily well this time around too.

Looks like Doom 3 will be another game where the color palette is "shades of black". Sigh.
Ok, this idiotic editorializing is getting out of hand. What the hell was he expecting? We're talking about a remake of Doom. Yes, michael, I agree, Doom would be a much better game if it had flowers and bunny rabbits, BUT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD MAN, IT'S DOOM! OF COURSE IT'S BLACK!

Domestic violence in the US has everything to do with the argument, but you apparently aren't smart enough to figure out how. I thought it was obvious the first time, a good deal more so the second, but I'll now explain it a third. It seems quite reasonable that a cruel husband could intimidate his wife into working a job that might well kill her.
Try not to be such an idiot.

I'll first reprint my statement, then I will explain it in more detail.
Women and children in particular are traditionally characterized as those most easily bullied on threat of torture into doing things that could easily be otherwise described as torturous. It's absurd to deny that this kind of intimidation takes place, as you can just look at domestic violence figures here in the enlightened US of A. So we can safely say that for all practical intents and purposes these people don't have a choice.
See the bit where I talk about domestic abuse? Grab both your brain cells, rub them together, and see if you can start a fire.
-rt ====== Now, I think it would be GOOD to buy FIVE or SIX STUDEBAKERS
I don't understand how you can make an argument so clearly based on hearsay. You don't site any references, and presumably aren't an expert yourself, and almost immediately state a bias against "liberals".
The fact is, that the people involved in the sweatshop system don't exactly have the kinds of freedoms you describe. The crux of your argument seems to rest in the notion that the women and children can leave the sweatshop if they want to.
A sweatshop is characterized by the absence of a living wage, unsanitary or otherwise unsuitable working conditions and arbitrary discipline.
If you need examples of the sorts of "arbitrary discipline" that take place in sweat shops, I can provide them. I just wanted to quickly point out how completely off base your argument is.

Don't molest me with your subliminabal mind games!! Your subliminabal tactics are too much for me! And yes he did say subliminabal three times on the record when surrounded by members of the press. He actually has come up with at least a couple other unique "Bushisms" which aren't exactly... well... in the English dictionary; Not to mention his numerous grammatical shortcomings.

Certainly 49,819,600 people can't be all that wrong now can they? This is more votes than CLINTON got so I guess that means good 'ol Billy Boy has the head of a rotten squash?
I would like you to explain clearly and rationally how precisely the number of votes a candidate recieves has anything to do with their intellectual faculty. Seeing as how we live in a grotesquely partisan nation who would rather die than see a non-bi-party-stamped-and-approved cadidate elected, this seems to only suggest that there were more republicans in the counties that mattered.
Furthermore, if the number of votes recieved were an accurate measure of intelligence, we clearly have a smarter candidate in Gore, seeing as how he did get more votes and all.
I've also yet to see a head of lettuce graduate from Harvard AND Yale.
Apparently you aren't familiar with how politicians put their kids through school. Here in reality, we have it from reliable sources that neither candidate made good students.

Just because the system wasn't prepared for the hit doesn't mean that it won't scale. Say a processor is built to scale. Say you have one of them. Say you ask it to do three or four times what it can do. It will choke. The beauty of scalability is that you can simply add a second or third or fourth processor. Like intel processors (specifically, older intel processors), Gnutella had scalability limits designed into it. This means that as you throw more horsepower at the system, you realize less and less gain... until eventually you simply can't add any more horses at all. Just because something is designed to be infinately scalable, doesn't mean it is infinately fast. It just means that it potentially/can/ be.

Aside from the fact that Contentville presumably hosts these thesis and charges money for them, I don't see how this is any different from Napster. Furthermore, if the Napster pundits had their way (quote from "Napster Anthem" as featured by Napster: "Trade laws? Don't need 'em") the content would be freely available, and any company would have a legal basis to provide for-pay hosting of it. So I really don't see how this is any different.
Admittedly, musician's rights are important, but let's face facts. A very large number of/.'ers were ardently in support of Napster (I imagine many still are) before they came up with the idea that this is actually a good way to re-evaluate musician's rights within the music industry.

The first question has been answered in a prolog someplace. He tells a short story, how he had been a little drunk, wandering the european countryside, finally passed out in a field holding a copy of "A Hitchhiker's Guide to Europe", subtitled "Europe on Five Dollars a Day" or something simialar and thought to himself, "Hey, there should a hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy".
My retelling may be somewhat incomplete/inaccurate. I've also intentionally stripped the story of any literary flare or humor which I may recall, as a more creative reinterpetation would have almost certianly corrupted a wonderful story told by a wonderful writer. I thought I'd toss that out there fyi.

Once upon a time, on a beach about 250 miles north of San Francisco, I was with a girl. The sun was slowly immersing itself in the horizon and the beer was running out and the frisbee had been lost in the sea. We decided the next best thing to playing frisbee and drinking beer was arguing about spirituality. I took the athiest position while she played the role of the agnostic.
As one might expect, the conversation got a bit out of hand. Before I knew it, I was having to lower my voice on a regular basis. In a particularly impassioned moment, she grabbed me by my shoulders and said, "Ryan, see that out there? All that water, might and majesty? It could destroy both of us in a second and be damned if I understand it. I can't even wrap my mind around the idea of it's bredth. It litertally exerts God-like control over us, and you know what? That's good enough for me. That's my God, right there."
I reflected on this for a few moments and considered mentioning to her that my microwave is something which I personally don't have a real firm understanding of, and my cat is capable of physical feats which I have a difficult time fathoming. I decided against doing so.
In any event, I hear a whole lotta people talking about how stupid everyone else is, and bashing one another over the head with semantics and frankly I can't help but find comfort in her perfectly lucid understanding of the world around her.

Is Slashdot soliciting Warez and Illegal MP3s?
I believe strongly in free exchange of general media and vehemently support the Gnutella effort. Take me as an example. I don't particularly care for the music that I find using search tools like Napster or Gnutella, and so the ability to pirate mp3's isn't important to me. As for games, I buy mine, even though I own a CD burner and a fair number of my friends are pirates.
But on to the real point, this is about much, much more than piracy. This is about the free general exchange of media on a scale that isn't presently viable using the existing server model of the internet. I dream of the day when I can search for essays on Tourette's syndrome and download the paper directly from the author. This is the first step in that direction.

I was running a server for a few days about 2 weeks ago. It was getting hammered HARD by people spamming text into the search system, and overloading the network. With the.48 client you'd be crashing in under half an hour. The newest one seems to stay up for more than a day, though
Developers are talking about this problem exactly. At this point it's just not too hard to flood the Gnutella servers, which is unfortunate. Because of the structure of gnutella networks, it winds up being particularly awful. They're talking about potentially implimenting some kind of flood protection to resolve this issue.

The other replier is exactly right, it was intended to be open-source, but shut down before the source got out. As mentioned on the gnutella unofficial FAQ, they have been working on reverse engineering the protocol, and have a log of a conversation with the nullsoft developer responsible for gnutella. That log also has some interesting details about his feelings on the subject of AOL's intervention.
