the actual technology used by nasa to create the zoom is the old demo scene trick of a number of different scale images scaled down and then expanded to their full size - this can also be done to create a real time fractal zoomer without having to render each frame seperately - just render the frame at double the resolution and zoom in until you hit that frame, in which time you've rendered the next double-size fractal image.

ok thanks. i couldn't find anything but this seems to be the only available image i've been able to find. not exactly perfect; i think most would agree.

well, you're missing the kind of fundamental aspects here. you don't *live* inside your computer. i can't tie you up and steal your tv once i've hacked into your computer and you certainly can't 'blow me away'.
hacking someone's personal computer is usually less malicious than crowbaring someone's PO BOX at your local post office, and even this analogy is too close really, because many hackers wouldn't read your mail, break the locker or take anything.

just like the conspiracy theorists who think that SETI@home is using your cycles for more than just the search for ET;)

it's hilarious, but slashdot is a near perfect example of this kind of phenomena. there's many ideas and principles that people believe in that would never get mentioned here because slashdot literally is news for nerds and although many of the population here are different, we're mostly a wide range of nerds... at least compared with regular people anyway.
i'd expect that most of the comments from people who aren't part of this nerd culture would have their comments modded down instantly. for instance, someone who has used ms word and part of koffice would be instant flaimbait if they were to say that they found the animated paperclip useful.
i'm kind of expecting to be modded down myself due to my different ideas...

oh right, well the machine that takes the cvs copy isn't the end backup - it's the machine with the tape drive on it. you can then backup from there.
obviously you backup when network traffic is low, but when you've got gigs of information to update, it can take hours over a 100mbps network, especially when some of them are trying to serve up web pages too.
i was angry:1 with:2 my:4 friend - i told:3 4 wrath:5, 4 5 did end.
if you use cvs to backup any information on your network, it means that you don't need to transfer entire files about - just diffs of the files that have changed, greatly reducing network strain.

a laptop's going to ask me to buy it when it's got a new fantastic mobile nVIDIA graphics card. when that happens, i'm not sure i'm going to be able to resist. that opengl support has seemed to be the one thing that's never been up to speed. oh well, i suppose i should put my student loan to good use.

i object to the dumbing down of linux/bsd users in this respect. i'm sure that the technology could be of use to some linux/bsd users, but i'm also sure that linux/bsd's commonly used and publicly tested technology would be of use to them too. my point is that in this case (kind of like with apple's darwin) *everybody wins*.

...could be exactly what is needed to help kick off 64bit computing - can anyone say 'open source'?
if ibm were to open source it, wouldn't someone take the respecting parts and jam it into linux or bsd and tada - ibm have a version of linux with all their special parts that they've previously coded for their own use yet is up do date as your 2.4 kernel. free as in beer too!

one way i got my MPs to listen (yes, i live in the UK) is to use an email to fax gateway. stand (campaining again the RIP act and others) do a similar thing with a form and some drop down boxes to choose your MP.
have a go - it opens up your communication methods. sure i wish everyone used email, but they don't yet.

firstly, i'd like to say that this will only work if it's introduced globally - which it obvously should be.
secondly, we need a generic spam law - not just for email. we need something that prevents all kinds of nusance email, junk mail, telemarketing sms messages etc...
maybe some kind of email authentication system is needed for email to prevent spam at the application level?
well, at least it's a start...
