But as I recall, Al didn't actually use any buzzwords in the speech he gave. This was a classic MIT "hack" which was foisted not upon Al Gore in particular, but jargon-spouters in general.
And I admire that Al was able to joke about it. While he may not_entirely_get it, he sure as hades gets it more than most_politicians_.

"Responsibility for my career? I'm just a freakin' phone monkey!"
There are several intruiging points that come to mind as I read this article. But the one that comes to the forefront of my mind is mainly philosophical.
While my "work" box runs Windows, my other boxen are on linux. This is my choice, and I am content.
But it seems now that linux's two camps - the "hobbiest linux" and "world domination linux" people are duking it out. But what are they fighting about?
It is probably for the best that linux become a mainstream, commercially viable desktop OS. And if it takes one distribution to this, is it truly a bad thing? For most users, one linux means their neighdor down the street can answer grandma's question. Your local ISP can help Mom get on the internet. Ease of use, not very configurable, but rock solid would describe this.
Hold off the flames a moment...
For the rest of us.... there are distributions. We can run our servers on anything, our desktops on anything, recompile our kernels, modify anything, and be constantly making a better linux.
Would it be so bad to have a "consumer" and "hacker" linux? I don't think so, and I believe it would help the linux movement immensely.

OMFG! So I byt this new PC with 98 preloaded, (I still run it, BTW( then M$ says, "Screw you, Jack! You want a Windows that doesn't crash daily? I got yer bug fixes right here.

Well, yeah, Intels a monopoly (or duopoly really)..
"Interviews with numerous current and former executives at Intel's largest OEM customers -- all of whom declined to be identified, fearing reprisals from Intel -- add fuel to the fire. These executives call the program addictive and claim their companies can't compete without it."
This is true. I've been trying to get my father into an AMD chip and he won't go. Why? It won't have "Intel Inside" Their FUD campaign has been wildly successful.
"There is no doubt that it's one of the major factors that influences [product] decisions," said a 20-year IBM PC executive who left the company in 1997.
Well, yeah. And how can AMD and Cyrix get market share as long as the largely (through few faults of their own) unknowing public takes the "Only game in town" as my father says and snubs the others?
"Responsibility for my career? I'm just a freakin' phone monkey!"
I am an engineer at a large printer company (no, not that one), and we mada a printer a few years ago that combined a printer, scanner, and computer (with modem) all in one box, with at the time cutting edge technology. Result? Big flop.
The problem is it was not easily upgradeable and looked scary to uninformed users.

Perhaps if I had worded it: If DVD was what it could be, it wouldn't blow, but as it stays with the technological and cultural shortcomings which are standard with Laserdisc which it closely emulates, it is nowhere near the fabulous technological advance it could be.
It is easily scratched, and the info on both sides makes it hard to handle compared to Minidiscs, which with the new 6 Gig format will prove very interesting.
but compared to what it could be, DVD blows.
I would have written all that, but I was at work.

Guys, DVD blows, but don't even get me started on Divx.
Hopefully this will sound as a warning to Divx distributors....
No one (who knows better) wants it, movie companies don't support it, video retal houses don't support, it has no extra features like DVD (a plus) and the hardware setup requires a credit card (?!?)
Go away soon Divx, you won't be missed "Responsibility for my career? I'm just a freakin' phone monkey!"

Thank you , Rift!
This is what I was saying in my post, just not as eloquently. There is a true difference between the hackers and.. what do we call them? Shrink wrap hackers? Some Assemble required Hackers? Download/Upload Hackers?
Anyway, the difference is the old school hackers were/are on a voyage of discovery, and the new ones are there to destroy and terrorize. "Responsibility for my career? I'm just a freakin' phone monkey!"
When will people take the time to understand the hackers and their worldview?
I know many of us here on/. would be considered hackers. I guess I would be too.
But I don't start viruses, crack programs, or delete files incomputers.
There are two types of hackers which are (to borrow from rap) Ols School and New School.
The old school hackers built Altairs, bootstrapped OS's onto their boxes, owned an Osbourne, were telnetting before anyone knew what telnetting was, had HTML 1.0 websites up, and basically flexed their love and knowledge of computers in any way they could. While some hackers were definately malicious, most of us weren't.
Come on, let's see hands. How many of us hacked into a site to see if we could, and then left after looking around?
But enter the new school. These "new wave" live to destroy. No, I'm not talking to you, these guys are still in junior high and high-school, not online right now. Yes, they are smart, but as one 14 year old I know says, "I like to blow a system, I like the control I have".
I guess this is their worldview, and while I don't agree with it, they can have it.
But the consequences to that worldview is unfortunate. They make it so those of us who do not do malicious actions (and in fact guard against them now) are grouped together with them.
So the question is, how do we get the mainstream to make the distinction?

Yes, and I can see them charging the same as for Win 98 shrink-wrapped, but how can they justify charging anything for the bug fix?
Look at it this way...
Win98 Upgrade = $89.00
Win98 SE = $89.00
Win 98 Upgrabe and SE CDROM = more than $89.00
How does this work again??

More exposure for Linux, and anything that gives Linux good, server-oriented exposure is a fabulous thing.
Mayhap other large comapnies will take note and consider linux for their servers.

Gnome! Much cooler looking, easier to work with, and has Wanda.
Both work just about equally well, but Gnome is just plain fun, and that's important to me.
