Aww, hell. I have a stand. I don't have a problem with THAT. What I have a problem with is people who feel that just because a stand is different from theirs; it is automatically wrong. I guess I'm just against intolerence to non-injurous ideas. Like what OS to use:)
Actually, I can back up Brian here. I work for a printer company, and WE write the drivers for out products. BeOS doesn't support the [snip] printer line because WE haven't written one.
Be has crappy hardware, it is true. But it isn't all Be's fault.
The Mac already kicks Microso~1's ass when it comes to rendering Bryce, but howabout the x86 architecture running Be. Will it make a big difference? (Tho the multiprocessor support makes me a little too excited...)
Alpha has always lunged ahead of the Pack with its chips.
But I wonder how this will affect the current Intel slowdown - i.e., they have 1 GHz chips running, but they're not releasing them, slowly ramping up to them.
If the OS is slick, fast, inexpensive, well-done, and ble to do the tasks you need with a minimum of fuss and indeed, to excel at them, and you don't have the source, does that make that seemingly good OS crap?
Now, I know BeOS has NO hardware support, but I saw it on a friend's computer and DAMN I was impressed.
Not having the source code didn't reduce my impression of it.
I don't think this is scary at all. We're bombing them as US made sattelites provide them with services? We're destroying their TV stations, now we deprive them of Internet.
Anyway, I am so glad to see Gnome maturing. This is the pre-eminent (No flames, KDE folks) easy to use GUI. I've been using it for about six months now and am in love. With the 1.08, it finally and officially passed the "Mom Test" (Well, dad, but mom ain't around) when he was able to access several files and get on the internet with it. Not bad for a 60 year old Micrso~1 user!
With the "Mom Test" passed, I am very pleased with Gnome and the new users it can attract!

Amen brother!
If I had a penny for every time a snotty Linux user came on, I could.. hell, I'd have a lot of money.
Whatever happened to Strenght Through Diversity?
I justlove the Puritanical Feeling here on Slashdot!
"I NEED FREEDOM!" "Hey! That isn't the OS I use, thou heathen."
Get off your high-horses, people.
Clump,
Insightful as always,
I too am a converted Microso~1 clone, and now I use Win, Linux, and Mac.
Each has it's strong points (Yes, even *gag* Windows) and each haas it's weaknesses (esPECIALLY Windows).
But if Be can raise the bar it will.
1) Crush Microsoft (heehee)
2)Make Linux expand as the GPLers rush to overtake and...
3) Improve computers in general.
Isn't the whole thing with GPL is "Diversity is Positive"?
But how about BeOS on an 80x86 vs. a G3?

Dude, I don't mean this as a flame, please don't take it as one.
But what is the fixation with boot time?
I think all they meant was the OS was streamlined. Nothing more. It probably was meant to be so significant.
Shall we get started on the moderation system again? This is almost what I typed, and I agree.
DAMN!
That's fast!
Somebody bump this guy's score back up from a -1 please!
My question is,
Alpha has always lunged ahead of the Pack with its chips.
But I wonder how this will affect the current Intel slowdown - i.e., they have 1 GHz chips running, but they're not releasing them, slowly ramping up to them.
Is this a threat to the Xeon?

I run Bryce (3D) on a Mac G3 and it's pretty #$(*& fast. Is Be faster? Does anyone have any benchmarks?
Go to www.be.com and check out the specs. Multithreading built in, native mutliprocessor support... a powerhouse!
Very impressive, if you have the correct hardware.
I agree, I do web design, and for graphics, I love my Photoshop, and Gimp just can't do what I need.
So, hello Windows partition. If BeOS supported my hardware, I'd load it in an instant to get its multimedia prowess, but alas...
Be, we love you, we think. But we won't be sure until we can use you.
This is getting closer to my personal ideal... wearables.
With a smaller memory footprint, and lower power consumption, could this be where Linux finally really "takes hold"?
Get the public thinking of linux and the Palm OS of wearables, then expand to desktops....
Hmmm....
Howzabout we start really naming them...
"The Biff can run at 600MHz and do X calculations perseconds, clearly outpacing the Jezabel made by..."
Come on. Give us Revisions, not cutesy names. It's getting harder to tell chip from chip by name alone!
I don't think this is scary at all. We're bombing them as US made sattelites provide them with services? We're destroying their TV stations, now we deprive them of Internet.
I love articles like this.
"Must... Fear... Unknown...!"
LOL, I just think it's cool. Might get one.
And we push closer and closer to mainstream!
Hell, we may be getting there now!
World Domination...
One quote in a couple of reviews grabbed me... "Better than Jedi, not as good as Empire."
Jedi was, even including the _hated, hated_ Ewoks, a pretty d@mn good film, and Empire was... Empire, the best of the series, and wonderful dark film!
So this puts The Phantom Menace in good company, making the antici pation even more delectable.
I do tech support as well and I can say two things:
1) User's don't need the help, they know all this already
2) If the users had this, they wouldn't read it anyway
Makes you wonder why there is so little interest in fusion research...
No, the title say MATuration...
sick...

"Responsibility for my career? I'm just a freakin' phone monkey!"
You know, all this mess kinda reminds me of when the AOL users first started being able to access the internet.
My how times have changed... or not...
"Responsibility for my career? I'm just a freakin' phone monkey!"
This is what I've been "raving" about for over a year. This is great.
Once we can get the "mom factor" - ie: your mother can use linux - then we can really consider linux mainstream.
And why would having two versions of linux a bad thing. Give your mom Caldera's User Friendly Linux, and hack away on the usual distro!
"Responsibility for my career? I'm just a freakin' phone monkey!"
well, I can see his point, but I really don't agree. Not everyone is "peer approval" oriented, some want their intellectual creations to be trademarked and copyrighted. When I do up a webpage, at the bottom it reads © 1999 · [my Name]. Now this doesn't mean that you can't use my images and code - au contraire - you're welcome to. But at least if I object to where the layout, files, etc. are used I can say something.
Flame me if you will, but I think copyrights have a place in this world, and while their roles may be changing, those roles remain.

My best friend is a Sysadmin... and I almost fell out of my chair. He has a ponytail and wears birkenstocks!
Oh how accurate!
If I could count how many times we've been at his terminal, drinking beer, at two a.m....
Also, they didn't mention the effects of caffeine, sugar, and beer on networking. That would be an interesting story...
