  1. uncopyable? DCMA? on Coming Soon: Burn-Proof CDs · · Score: 3

Yeah. Right. Just like PSX games.

But even *that's* different, because the PSX hardware is looking for a boot code that doesnt transfer when the disc is copied (the burner's error correction removes it).

But how will thier copy-pro work for a $50 Walmart CD player?

And on the flipside, lets assume this copy protection does what it is supposed to to, if only initially. Lets also assume cdparanoia (for an example of a beautiful piece of software) releases a patch to defeat the copy protection. Aren't they violating the DCMA, as referenced in the interview with Rep Boucher? What recourse does that leave?

Okay. Traditional jewish (and thereby christian) belief states that God created the world in just 6 days (and spent some time chillin' afterwards). Now, how long is a day in the eyes of God? Could it be that we humans have been alive for mere minutes relative to Him? Seems to me that whoever created the universe was all about subtlety. After all, patience is a virtue in any religion...

And people forget that the bible was written by man. Divinely inspired, but still written by man. There are centuries of oral tradition bound up in that book, with stories much older than modern writing. We all played 'telephone' in grade school. It makes sense that some things, well, may NOT have gone exactly like the book says. But its still not a bad place to look for clues.

So what does all this make me? Can you be a creationist that believes in evolution?

At this point SMP doesnt play nicely with power management. You enable it, and DPMS *will* be automatically disabled by the kernel. Timing issues or something (I'm no kernel hacker).

But I'm fairly certain that the CPU's still do HLT commands. I've run some dualie servers with the case off (watching the LEDs on the RAID controller) and the CPUs ran CONSISTANTLY cooler than the same model box doing NT. And as any overclocker (or some laptop users) will tell you, heat = more watts fed in.

But really the problem with most servers isnt the actual CPU. Its the rows of case fans, redundant power supplies, and 10k rpm SCSI drives that suck the most of it up (ever seen the inside of a Dell 6450?). And you really can't put any one of those devices to sleep without reducing the usability and/or stability of the machine.

So its not JUST your monthly billing statement that they are losing out on.

So if they increase thier profits by having more subscribers, you *are* stealing from them, in a very real sense.

I'd say man pages are a good intermediate trainer. But I am willing to bet money that if you give an average newbie (whom we'll assume is fimiliar with DOS Zip) the tar man and tell them to archive /home, they won't have it in a half hour.
