  1. Sending out resumes is like fishing... on Need a Job? · · Score: 1

Expect one positive response for about every 10-20 resumes you send out. This is normal (and, yes, annoying). Also, don't be afraid to submit resumes for positions that you are not quit qualified for. Companies often post their wish list and settle for less. Other times, there are more junior positions that are not advertised.

Btw, with regards to Dice, Dice is a good way to attract the attention of headhunters but headhunters are not always useful for entry level people. www.monster.com is better, try going to the monster.com for your state (e.g. ny.monster.com for new york, me.monster.com for maine, etc). Another good way to find job openings is to look on web pages for companies in your area. www.bigyellow.com can be useful for finding out which companies are in your area.

And if all else fails, join an organised crime syndicate ;-).

  4. Job Hunting Tip - www.monster.com on Need a Job? · · Score: 1

Having just completed a job search, let me give some advice. http://www.monster.com is a great site, and there are also separate monster sites for each state. I was looking for a job in Maine or New Hampshire, so I spent a lot of time at me.monster.com and nh.monster.com. I had 3-4 job interviews and a (really good) job offer come out of replying to posts on Monster (and I'm still fairly entry level, only 6-7 months full-time experience), so I would highly recommend it.

I'm not sure about that, I think people are just so self-involved that they have trouble seeing past the end of their nose sometimes, and this translates ininto stupid behavior and ignorance.

Then again, maybe self-involvement to the exclusion of nearly all else is part and parcel of stupidity. I'd think about it some more, but I want to go stare in the mirror for a few hours...

Irrational? I've had to teach Windows over the phone to people who don't get the concept of single click vs. double click. After about the three hundredth iteration, you start having nothing but contempt for clueless idiots who think that installing a modem is like installing a toaster, and then take it out on you when it's not. All they want to do is download dirty pictures, not turn into computer techies.

I used to work in a computer lab, so I know the sort of people you are talking about. But it is important to realize that the bellicose morons who blame YOU for THEIR ignorance are a small minority. Many people honestly want to learn, and there is no reason not to be nice and help them.

What ending? I read the last page of the last chapter of Snow Crash and was surprised not to find another chapter when I turned the page. Same thing for Diamond Age. NS has some great ideas, but his characters lack depth and his plots lack conclusions.

I would still recommend both Snow Crash and Diamond Age because NS has some brilliant ideas. I'll agree that Snow Crash was the better of the two.

  24. Moderation Problems on Assorted Slashdot Changes · · Score: 5

I've mentioned this before, but this seems to be the proper forum to bring this up. It seems to me that moderators are upgrading the ranking for posts they _agree_ with and downgrading the ranking for posts they _disagree_, rather than rating the posts based on their cogency and how ralated they are to the topic. Look on the Utah/censorship discussion, and you'll see that the a bunch of anti-censorship posts got 4's and 5's, while the highest rating someone arguing in favor of the Utah school board could hope for was a 2.

Does anyone disagree with this assessment? I will read any (non-flame) rebuttal with an open mind.
