I don't think that waiting for all the movies is that bad of an idea for a DVD release. I already have 2 different copies of the "middle" trilogy, so I won't mind have a VHS copy of the first 3 before I can get all 6 on DVD.
I also have fond memories of the trilogy being played over and over and over while studdying was (supposedly) being done.
>>Ah, you are assuming it knows about death and self-preservation. It might not have our survival instincts and our experience and skills at dealing with the deception of predators.
I suppose that I did not go enough into how I define a thinking, or intelligent machine. Self awareness is a very big part of how I'd define a "thinking" machine.
Humans are the most aggressive primates on the planet, how could any intelligent being not find that out in relatively short order after being in contact with us?
In concept that sounds like a good idea, but if we all just say sod it and go with the flow, we would be losing the essence of the "spirit" of hard core computer users. IMHO it would be more easy to leave our thoughts on the forums that most large media groups have. It is only because the mainstream of society are uneducated in IT and think that most computer users are: 1: Gamers 2: Work users and anyone else is a geek who has no life or an evil person who breaks into other persons computers and steals info/£££ or pirates large amount of software. IMHO people need to find out that the sterotype is incorrect.
Is Net and Web property infinite? That is, is the Net so expansible that it could never be overcrowded and congested?
Neal Stephenson did a great job discussing this in Snow Crash...the most valuable "properties" were those closest to the "stations" where people "entered" the "metaverse" (net, web, etc.)
Today, the stations are probably best represented by the search engines and other websites which are the "start-up" pages on people's browsers. Netscape had a monopoly on this for a while and didn't realize the value they had and blew it as Netcenter came to market after it was too late.
We've had the "land grab" and next comes the creation of "markets" and "trade"...best demonstrated by eBay itself and other "sticky" sites like priceline.com...with Ultima Online it is finally coming to a "comodity" which the individual players can accumulate.
Anyone who has taken a look at a site produced by a so-called WYSIWYG Web editor knows two things; 1) HTML produced with a Wysiwig editor is full of redundant tags which blow out the size of the document and thus waste bandwidth and download time. 2) Sites pruduced with these editors all have a pro-forma appearance; they LOOK like they were made in a web authoring package. Sorry, but IMNSHO there is nothing to beat pure, unadulterated, hand-coded HTML. It is not hard to learn, in fact it is often easier and quicker than getting to grips with the foibles of a wysiwig package. I use either MS Notepad (ugh!) for quick modifications or CygnusEd on my trusty Amiga for from-scratch jobs. - Mystikan - (Steve Roper)
The best tool is Dreamweaver 2 for the Mac. It comes with BBEdit 5, which is by far the best HTML text editor. The Windows version of Dreamweaver comes with Homesite, which is adequate but not something you'd want to use every day. Dreamweaver in conjunction with Fireworks is particularly productive. It also has very useful built-in FTP transfer functions.
The only bad thing about Dreamweaver is that it has far too many windows, so if you haven't got at least a 21" screen you'll find that you're moving and closing windows a lot of the time. GoLive is much more elegant in this respect, having tabbed windows. Having too many windows is a problem with other Macromedia apps like Director as well. Hopefully, Macromedia will sort this out with the next release.
I agree completely. Dreamweaver has written some of the most highly readable HTML (in a text editor) i have ever seen from a WYSIWYG HTML authoring tool. However, my recommendation is to try out fte (and xfte) for linux. It is a very impressive coding text editor and highlights code as well as has some neat tools built into the program. Works great for HTML, C, PERL, etc.. check it out. (sorry you'll have to search for it:))
DVD will have NO part in music today. People were stupid in the '80's (wow man its like silver!) and handed over the cash for CD's. I will not submit to the monster. This will end now! nNo more $17 doller cd. No more stupidity. DVD is a breath of fresh air from analog (VHS) to digital (DVD), but digital to digital will not be as easy. It will fail. Hackers will win. All is good. How long will it take them to find a way to start DVD ripping? 2-3 weeks people?
1) The ICQ server (apparently) wants a cleartext password. That's not security--any sniffer from the local machine outward can figure that out easily.
2) You want the user to only enter the password once--so how does the local machine verify the user is the same person the second time? There's no way, so my brother (for instance) could connect as me just by choosing me from a list.
A better idea (assuming this client is going to run under Linux) is to:
a) Tell the user that ICQ "passwords" are not at all secure by their nature, so your program won't bother encrypting it locally, but that it WILL
b) store the password in cleartext in a properly permissioned file in the user's home dir, assuming the user wants to store it anywhere (which should be configurable).
The situation is impossible under Win95 since there is no differentiation made between users (with the exception of the PWL file, but I don't think you want to go there).

While I agree that Corel has been VERY supportive of KDE, they are in no way special: Caldera sponsors the whole ftp site of the KDE project, something like 40 GB of dowanloads a day. SuSE also donated stuff. And if they ever added a proprietary extension to KDE, well who cares - just copy it. KDE is under the GPL. Any extension must be under GPL as well....
And while I like and work with Star Office, I am looking forward to a good Kword. Star Office is as proporietary as you can get, hides a lot from the user and is quite big. You can't convert your SO text files to any Open layout language format(except HTML), you can't import TEX or DVI.
I've already talked to them about a port to BeOS. They said that their design team would examine the OS to determinte feasability of the port, and then the management types would have a go at figuring out the market for it. I'm sure you'll get a simmilar answer for a linux port --- Donald Roeber
Emacs is the best for html. now I know there are some features that it doesn't have- such as color wheels, automatic image insertion, etc. etc. But its macro system more than makes up for that.
This guy is obvious disbalanced. No one in their right mind could write such pointless drivel. Doesn't he have anything to do besides sit around and ramble out nonesense? I mean, come on, if I were to sit around and ramble like him I would never make it to the class I have to go to at 8:00. Of course, today is Saturday, so I don't have to worry about that. But on Monday, that's a different story, let me tell you! It's up at 6 and then class at 8. I don't know how this Loader of Code and of Tricks manages it.
Well nice talking to everyone! You guys are all really cool and/. rocks! See ya!
I believe the Linux distribution is Trinux if I am not mistaken. It works quite well.

AOL could shut off all services except perhaps SSH with which they could tunnel into your system to see what you are downloading.
No way would I give up that much power to AOL.
It has to be a very dumb idea.
