I am a small cog in the big blue machine known as "IBM". In our internal Linux forums, the major debates about Linux seem to be legal issues regarding the GPL.
If we have developers work with GPL'd software, are they now intellectually "contaminated" and if so does that mean that they are now useless (legally) to move back to prorpietary products like AIX? I mean, what if said programmer accidentally bases some proprietary code off of what he learned from GPL'd code?
And what mechanisms can IBM put in place to ensure that intellectual property of IBM's is not compromised via GPL coding efforts?
I know many people here think that IP is bad, and personally I'm not a big fan myself, but IBM makes literally BILLIONS off of patent royalties alone and does not want to lose that significant source of income.
Most folks seem to think the problem is convincing the PHB's that they can make money off of free software. That's not the problem here. The problem here is legal issues for a company that has a lot invested in IP and how does it keep from contaminating GPL or proprietary code with code from the other?
> Our apologies, but our server is currently coping with a traffic peak, > probably due to the/. effect. Please try your request again > in about 10 seconds. If the condition persists, please send us mail > at the address below, including any details you think relevant.
Yep, that's the page displayed when the server is overloaded and can't cope with the submission.
Oh, and about the IBMers who work on free source? They generally don't wear suits, and they're not the ones for whom this information was originally being collected. However, the results are interesting enough that now they're for us, not a specific audience.
Those of us in the U.S. seem to make a recreation out of finding someone or something to blame for everything bad that happens (yes, it's a generalization, but it's true). Occassionally, we find the right person or thing to blame, but such incidents rarely find their place on international news. People in other countries seem to make a recreation out of pointing out what is wrong with the U.S. when those later incidents occur.
The media now provides an instant look into events as they occur or immediately after. Our first reaction to tragedy is "Why?" and in this world of instant feedback, we get a lot of answers. Unfortunately, you combine this with the previous point I mentioned, and you get a lot of blame really quickly where it doesn't belong.
I think there are probably a lot of us in this forum on/. that have had to put up with their fair share of put-downs or outcasting as a result of our interests at some point or another during our high school lives. I think it's safe to say that at least most of us didn't react in the way that has recently received so much attention. Is this because of the parenting we received? Is it because we just didn't want to? Is it because we have a higher regard for life? Is it because we vented our frustrations blowing up aliens and monsters? I don't know. I just know I made it through and a lot of others have too.
Regardless of parenting (but let me express I feel that is the most important factor in a child's development), there are large influences on a developing psyche from all over the place; including media, friends, peers, etc. These things all work together to provide a backdrop to the development of people. We can't look at just the parents' role, although I agree it seems to be somewhat lacking and that it must have played a significant part. We can't look at just the games they played, although the fact that they played those games may be an indicator that there're some emotions that need to be dealt with (but, maybe not). It's impossible to say.
A couple of posters on this forum have used the term "gun nuts" to, as far as I can tell, describe anyone in the U.S. who supports the second amendment and/or owns guns. So, apparently, I'm a gun nut now. But I haven't killed anyone. And if I did, I wouldn't use a gun. There's no creativity or challenge in it. Guns are tools. Like any tool, they can be misused. Just think, drunk drivers misuse their cars to kill people, but no one's calling for the banning of all cars.
Anyway, we as humans naturally tend to gather in groups of like-minded people. That's the whole basis for community. When something bad happens, we want to blame someone else for it. And because we can't find fault with our own beliefs, it must be something that someone from another group (game players, gun owners, trenchcoat wearers, etc.) that is to blame. Their thinking is wrong. And in order to protect themselves, those groups retaliate by finding someone else to blame and so on.
So, I ask you. Since I'm a gun owner who dresses in dark clothes often that enjoys playing violent video games AND that plays AD&D from time to time, whether or not I'm wearing my duster or trenchcoat, who do I get to blame when things go wrong? Which one is it? It's got to be someone else, because I've been taught by the media and the reaction of the people to bad things that people never do bad things just because they want to.
you mean like "A gun in the home is X times more likelyto be used on a fammily member than on an intruder"
Where "used" only counts shootings...and suicides are counted (while they do fit the profile of "on a fammily member"...they scew the results...afterall suicide rates do not drop in places with less guns... just more self hangings and building jumps)
If he's between the ages of 18 and 45, and is a law abiding citizen, then yes. We are all the militia here. Not only is it our right, but is our duty.
Here in the US every male is REQUIRED to register with the government so that we can be drafted into the military. Why? Because as the militia it's our duty.
Fully automatic weapons were outlawed back in 1986 or 1988
Maybe where you live, but not in the U.S. The BATF requires a background check, fingerprinting and a huge amount of cash. You then have a class III permit to own a full auto.
You can pick up a MAC-10, or an old full auto Uzi no problem.
I take you are speaking from experience. Please recount your story of how you were able to get one (and keep it without getting snagged by the cops).
These kids who have been killing have given us the reason, but evidentally, no one is listening. It is revenge. Now, we need to look at what they need revenge for. They have been picked on, beaten up, and tormented by the popular kids, jocks, etc. Granted, it is no excuse to run around killing people; it is the reason they are doing it. We need to pay more attention to the "normal" kids and make sure that they know that their actions can have deadly repercussions and that only loser torment people.
>>That's why I fell for it -- it wasn't an exaggeration. I know people who think like that. But I started suspecting when it started getting as far out as the "Klinton" thing; I doubt a nutcase that extreme would be the sort to hang out on Slashdot.
Why is one who sees the Clinton for the scum that they are a "nutcase"?
>>By the way, though, the riff about "Klinton and her husband" is pretty close to a direct quote from a militia web page. There are people out there, mostly in places like Michigan, who say those things in a very sincere and serious way. They are not joking. That's the scary thing: My troll was not an exaggeration.
You don't have to be a "militia type" to believe that the Clintons are corrupt. Or to believe that constitutional rights are important.
You also don't have to be a "right wing extremist" to believe that we are all the militia.

Wasn't the test supposed to be about how nt can scale up but Linux can't? We all know the test was rigged, and I'd like to see it run again, but over a range of machines.
What does nt vs Linux look like on a 486 66 w. 8 meg of ram? Hmmm?
Everyone is complaining how Microsoft rigged this test, but no one is surprised or doing anything about it. Why doesn't someone just sponsor an HONEST test, and let the best system win.
I've never understood how people relate the cost of an OS with IT workforce demand. The marketplace has a demand for valuable applications. That demand is what drives job creation, not what is charged for shrinkwrapped software. MS's denial that control of computing environments is being driven to the user's enterprise is a dangerous oversight. The barriers to customized software and OSes have dropped and organizations can now obtain exact solutions for their needs, not just the best guess that a mega-conglomerate can offer. That's where the job market will continue to grow, offsetting the losses we'll see in the shrinkwrap sector.
I understand this, but the option of 256 channels even feels like overkill to me.

Hi,
I havn't check the original "trojan", but I kind of get the idea of it. However, I remember that I could use absolute positioning in ebay. (but I didn't use "top:0; left:0" So I'm not sure if you can cover the top!)
Make a fake bidding form is quite easy, simply send the form to your server side and redirect the user back to the actual confirmation page. And then you use "commemt" or "table" tag at the end to dump the real submit form. (even if you can't dump the real submit form, some bidder will still stupid enough to submit the upper form!!)

256 channels has to be one of the most absurb ideas I've heard of. What would you ever use them all for? Also, compression speed on wavelets may be agonizingly slow, but decompression speed should be faster than most other formats.
I make 20-30 forms with javacript in less than 9k of code. If you do it with those tags you will probably trible the size. I know it's just 27k, but it DOES make webpage a lot faster, especially with huge tables. (And yes, a huge table make more sense and faster than click click, when you want to check some company's inventory.)
The universal method, of course, lie! say you need them to "truely grasp the concept of her beauty", or, just tell her the (modified) truth, " with these glasses you look really stunning" (just like traci lords)
This seems to me to be the attitude of the typical American redneck when subjected to anything they don't like. "Lets go find the person that we think is responsible, and shoot them. What could be more American than that?"
Do you support the actions of the youths in Colorado that decided that they would start shooting people in a school randomly as a valid form of protest? I don't think that getting a gun and going to shoot politicians is going to get much of a better response from anyone.
In this particular case, the government is trying to buy the vote of a key member in the Senate by pushing fluffy happy 'Family Values' legislation through. That's great, because we all want to live in Pleasantville, USA right?
