My girlfriend and I were discussing old 80s computing while trying to get her Atari working (we did actually! Its amazing how much its like MacOS today, or windows, and it was from 1986). She mentioned that Amiga was trying to start up again... I agreed that I had heard the same thing, but not much had come from it. Are they going to have a release of Amiga OS for x86 peecees? Will they, or someone, be selling hardware any time soon?
I've never even heard of bungie's Marathon before this. What I do remember was staying up really late and playing Ultima's. Ah, was there anything better than exploring lord british's castle that first time you played an Ultima? (U6 for me). Anything better than making up all these complex robbery schemes to rob the bank in Britain, and then running from the guards (you'd think the avatar could get away with anything, but no, damn holier-than-thou guards). Battling Batlin in U7 Pt1 and 2 was awesome, and although 8 was really strange, and 9 kinda crappy, I'm sorry to see them go. You out there Origin? Release the engines under the GPL! You certainly won't be releasing anymore Ultima's without Lord British himself, but let us see the source!
I think this would make a really neat product. With entertainment centers getting pretty crowded (TV, VCR, Stereo, Tuner/Receiver, DVD, Multiple game consoles, Cable box) it would be nice to have a unit that plays games AND records shows.
OTOH, the old unix paradigm of 'Do one thing, do it well' may apply... if its not as good as a Dreamcast or a Tivo, then it may not be worth it at all...
Has anyone seen this supposed 'distro' available for download anywhere? I'd love to put linux on my 16meg DiskOnChip for my firewall, probably be a lot quieter than the laptop harddrive it currently runs off of (just easier to set up, and easier to play around with 3 gigs instead of 16 megs). Fear me cisco! I'll have almost equal functionality of a cisco dual-ethernet router, with built-in firewalling, and fortune!
Only 40k connections? Linux only does 20k connections now? C'mon, we all know FreeBSD 1.2 has supported 150 Million concurrent connections using only my grandma's WebTV... Oh and don't even get me started about what it'll do after it merges with the BSDi code (Grandma can't wait!)
Seriously though, has anyone ever ran into that limit on linux? I guess on big heavily loaded servers (/. comes to mind, as does any server that has their link on/.'s front page...) that have the CPU and memory to handle that many connections, it is almost mandatory...
Funnier yes, but my scenario is (unfortunatly) probably more likely to happen... But would we want IBM to be the #1 pc manufacturer and supplier? Probably not, then we'd just be stuck with OS/2 instead of Win ME.
Y'know, if I had some cash, I'd buy IBM. OS/2 wasn't THAT bad after all....
Maybe I should just stick with trying to make funny posts instead of insightful ones:).
Pres. Bush loads up Linux Kernel 2.4 on his home PC, says "Where's my Ricky Martin MP3s? Where's my winamp? How come I can't get this so-called 'Stateful Inspection'. Damn strange firewalling syntax if you ask me" - Switches to OpenBSD.
Feds go to hunt down Jon Katz - "Goddamn he's annoying" One secret service agent is heard to say.
IBM bought by Microsoft for there OS/2 technology - Balmer says "Maybe Bill was right after all!" - Bush says "OK!"
Linus has another Kid, declares "Sex is good!" - Big slump in patches to 2.5 kernel, as geeks everywhere discover the wonderful world of sex.
So the internet, which is based on computers, is killing computer clubs? I guess thats possible, but maybe its just changing the way computer clubs work, y'know, just like how it changed commerce...
You can get Oracle 8i for free from oracle, and while its a bear to setup, I've found it to be faster than PostGRE 7.0 in a lot of ways... of course, you'll make up for that with all the money you'll spend in training costs;).

Yea, screw john katz anyway. What would slashdot know about 15 year old boys and them using linux ... oh wait ...
Bottom Line:
....
CDE Sucks, Gnome/Gtk and KDE/Qt do Not.
Kinda makes ya wonder

I don't really see the point ... whats wrong with wires? They are messy, long, and fun to trip over.
