  1. DVD Hardware on Prototype Hardware DVD Decodoer for Linux-needs help · · Score: 2

I've had a Creative Encore 5x DVD package with the DXR-2 decoder board for a while and it works great. Why couldn't Creative just release Linux drivers for that board? It's already in production and it's not too expensive...

  2. Gigabit ethernet vs. ATM on First Gigabit Ethernet Chip Demo · · Score: 2

I was reading some articles on this topic and found some interesting discussions about gigabit ethernet vs. ATM transmission.

In a nutshell, one article suggested that ethernet began to perform less and less efficient the more data was pushed through the ethernet pipe (up to about 65 to 75% overall utilization), due to the differing packet sizes or something like that.

The article then went on to say that for large pipes of data, the single cell-? size of an ATM packet allowed it to scale "much" better than the ethernet network. They said up to something like 95% utilization.

Maybe gigabit ethernet wouldn't be as good of a decision if ATM worked better in this situation. Can anybody explain the difference to me? If you happen to have performance numbers, please post them.

  3. Cisco IOS and Linux? on Linux Based Router · · Score: 2

Here's a question for anyone who's worked with both Linux and IOS:

Would it be possible to compile Linux to run on the Cisco equipment? IOS supports downloading a new "Flash ROM" for IOS updates, so I'm guessing that Linux could run on a Cisco router/switch/hub for a lot less than the several-thousand-dollar IOS software?????

    Please enlighten me...

  4. Play DIVX discs on a DVD player? on Anti-DIVX article · · Score: 1

Maybe I'm naive about this, but isn't the DIVX standard is pretty much the same information that's on a DVD (compressed MJPEG) just encrypted with triple DES?

If that's the case, then doesn't the DES key have to be downloaded to the DIVX player before it can play the movie?

If that's the case, then couldn't someone get the DES key from the smartcard (or whatever stores it) and put the key on a floppy?

If the key's on a floppy, couldn't someone use that key with a software DVD player to playback a DIVX disc on your computer DVD ROM?

I know it probably wouldn't work on a DVD player, but on a computer....who knows....maybe even a DIVXKEYS.COM will come of this :)
