"As part of our global environmental commitment, the new Volvo S80, S60, V70 and Cross Country feature the Volvo PremAir® radiator system. It helps reduce ground level ozone as you drive. PremAir can best be described as coating on the radiator that actually turns ground level ozone into oxygen as air flows through it. At high temperatures, almost 75% of this is converted into oxygen."

"By covering the surface of the radiator with a catalytic coating, it helps to remove dangerous, smog-forming ozone from air flowing through the radiator."

I was interviewing for desktop support a while back and I interviewed quite a few people. One candidate kinda knew what she was doing, however when I asked her my trick question: "What's the most recent computer-related thing that you did or learned that you're really proud of?", she couldn't answer. When I asked her a technical question, she responded in a very aloof manner, as if she were just reciting the begat's from the Bible.

At least in a dotcom, it isn't just work or being able to Do The Tasks - it's more about whether or not you're *passionate* about what you're doing. If you don't have that passion, you'll never be able to work those 60-70 hour weeks. You'll lack the drive to multitask and do more and learn more. I've seen people who just Do The Tasks and I don't want them in my team. I want people who care about what they're doing so much that they can't sleep on the weekends because they want to know why that one remote office connection is losing packets. Those of the kinds of people who I will put faith in and want to have in my company and team. That passion means that it won't be just a Job but their life and joy.

(I finally hired someone who responded "Oh, a couple weekends ago I built a new dual Celeron machine from scratch and overclocked it to....".)

Too bad you didn't think of it first! At my previous job, we had servers named "IT" (pronounced "it" not "eye-tee"), "What", "ThemThar", etc.

It became a fun game to say "Hey, IT's down!" "What?" "It!" "You talking about ThemThar server??" =P And we had way too much fun with the Faith No More lyrics "What is It?! It's IT! *What* is it??!"...

I got in a lot of trouble for naming those servers, but we got laughs out of playing the bastardized "Who's on First" game. And my argument to keep them that way was that no one had to really care what the names of the PDC or WINS server were except for the MIS team.

    Heeeeee....

The Java applet works on non-Windows-based OS'es. It currently talks to MSN. Plugins for AIM and Yahoo are in the works (some may exist, but they aren't publicly available). The idea is to have a little button you click and the message goes to whatever client your recipient is using. The Java applet also has a switch to make yourself visible or "invisible" ("offline").

The Windows-based program has file transfer, text-to-voice, chat, file transfer, a "who can see me" list, HTML-able messages, etc...

    It's getting better too.

  8. Wired on Neuromancer: The Movie · · Score: 1

There was an article in Wired about this, just a teeny blurb. But it said something about Gibson having his hands in this movie. He seemed really excited about it, saying that he was critical of what was gonna happen - but that he was pleased with what was being done. I'm sure that by the time that this movie comes out, movie technology will be better. I'm excited about it - definately. The only thing that I'm afraid of is how much of the book is gonna be toned down so that it appeals to more audiences.

Anyone remember the "William Gibson directed" episode of "The X-Files"? Heh - Invisigoth.

  9. Re:They didn't got the hacker definition right on Impressive 'expose' on Hackers in US News · · Score: 1

A "cracker" is malicious. Most sites are cracked if they are vandalized. A "hacker" is someone who evokes certain information from a machine or person or thing by guiding the thing/person in the desired direction. Another term is "Social Engineering". If I ask you questions, and I get the desired answers from you, I have hacked your brain. I am a hacker. I am a social engineer.

One definition: "Whereas crackers sole aim is to break into secure systems, hackers are more interested in gaining knowledge about computer systems and possibly using this knowledge for playful pranks."

Another definition: "cracker n. One who breaks security on a system. Coined ca. 1985 by hackers in defense against journalistic misuse of hacker (q.v., sense 8). An earlier attempt to establish `worm' in this sense around 1981-82 on Usenet was largely a failure."

And yet another: "hacker n. [originally, someone who makes furniture with an axe] 1. A person who enjoys exploring the details of programmable systems and how to stretch their capabilities, as opposed to most users, who prefer to learn only the minimum necessary. 2. One who programs enthusiastically (even obsessively) or who enjoys programming rather than just theorizing about programming. 3. A person capable of appreciating hack value. 4. A person who is good at programming quickly. 5. An expert at a particular program, or one who frequently does work using it or on it; as in `a Unix hacker'. (Definitions 1 through 5 are correlated, and people who fit them congregate.) 6. An expert or enthusiast of any kind. One might be an astronomy hacker, for example. 7. One who enjoys the intellectual challenge of creatively overcoming or circumventing limitations. 8. [deprecated] A malicious meddler who tries to discover sensitive information by poking around. Hence `password hacker', `network hacker'. The correct term for this sense is cracker."

    I hope that makes sense.
