That's a very interesting idea. Designate computing an essential service and regulate it just as you would a public utility. Tele-communications and computing are essential to business. Perhaps software, hardware and tele-communication companies wield too much power and there should be more safeguards in place to ensure that they do not abuse it. Something to think about.
Faster? That sounds great. I only have 32M of Ram and I find Mandrake 5.3 runs a bit slow with KDE, but faster than OpenLinux 1.2's desktop! I find Mandrake to be a great distribution to have when you want to get a system up and running in a hurry and still have all the bells and whistles.
I really appreciate the lack of banners and clutter that you mentioned. All the other search engines have really become web portals eager to have you use their free e-mail accounts and join their chat groups etc. I think that in most cases this has detracted from their original purpose which is to quickly present you with relevant information. With Google I don't have to clog my slow connection with this rubbish. I get my results much more quickly.

So now it's Linux against the world not just MS? Any good alternative OS is a welcome thing and FreeBSD is obviously as good as they come. Walnut Creek must choose to run FreeBSD over Slackware for a reason.
I was surprised to read that a site with as much traffic as cdrom.com was running on one machine with one CPU. I guess the importance of processor speed is overblown by the media and Intel press releases and not enough attention is given to the importance of lots of RAM and fast hard drives. Does anyone know what version of FreeBSD they are running?
I don't think we will gain by having Linux on every desktop. It will slowly be tamed and dulled, I think it would be better off staying a hacker's secret.
