  1. Re:Some good, lots of crap on Against Intellectual Property · · Score: 1

But guess what, whatever you create belongs to the company that you work for, so you will not be well compensated. You will probably get the recognition you desire, but not the huge monetary gain you want. Why do I say this? Because thats how the world works. You will settle for making 200K, 300K from 125K a year. Alot of people do take this small compensation while the company makes millions, sometimes even billions for their discoveries. You might argue that you can break away from the company and then sale it on the market. But mostly this doesn't work, because the work that lead you up to your discovery will most undoubtedly show up in things you have done for the company. For example, I left a pretty nice company that designs software for fortune 500 companies. To make a long story short, I left that company to work at another company that was working on a project almost similar to what Microsoft is doing right now with .NET. At any rate, I got an phone call from my old boss saying stuff about intellectual property, and if I am working on anything similar to what I did for NASA that I could be walking the line desaster. I think my old boss was more concerned for me than anything else, but you never know what management has under their sleeves.

Intellectual property is a very complicated issue. I hope it is cleared up sometime soon...

  2. With everything... on Benchmarks of *BSD, Linux, and Solaris at LinuxTag · · Score: 1

So the benchmark says that Linux isn't up to par. We don't have to believe it, but we for sure shouldn't play the game of blaming it on some secret organization out to make Linux look bad; payouts, free CDs, etc.

I look at it this way, if there is any truth to these test, we should jump on it. We shouldn't sit around typing on a computer talking about the flaws in their benchmark. We should be sitting on our asses trying to scan the code find where we can improve it. Hell if your not a great programmer, try it anyway, perhaps your self estimation of your abilities were greatly underestimated. You never know...

I am a Linux User, don't plan to change. But I give BSD its props. Linux will be at your heels soon enough!!!!

  3. Interesting enough... on What About Functional Languages? · · Score: 1

Functional languages have a natural hiearchy; basically after you finish one block of code you know right away what needs to be done. However, OO languages for the inexperienced usually leaves them wondering which avenue to take, which objects to consider in their project, but with time, this difficulty disappears. This raises an interesting question, which is better for beginners to learn? I started programming in 5th grade so you know my answer (There were no OO languages when I grew up). But back to the issue at hand. You can't totally throw one form out completely, for not every program should be solved in OO manner. I don't think OO can be a pancea, and who else could I possibly use to support this claim, yes, Bjarne Stroustrup, he siad "... OOD/OOP is my favorite way of approaching design and programming. It just isn't the right style for every program and for every detail of a program. Some good abstractions are best represented outside class hierarchies. Trying to force everything into a hierarchy - especially into a single-rooted hierarchy - can give truly contorted programs." So with that said, there will continue to be a place for both styles, so there will also be a place for both languages.

Going to another point of dead languages. To claim that one is dead, like ADA, like Fortran, like Pascal is to totally miss the point, we built off of these languages, they have transformed into alot of things we use to today. For example, look at the similarities of ADA, Modula-2, Pascal, and Delphi Do you see any similarities of basic, and Fortran?

This time I will say what was learned from the so called second round of benchmarks: 1) It showed that Mindcraft didn't know what they were doing. 2) It shows that we need improvements, and it was very helpful in stating these facts. I love Linux, but I won't turn away from its problems, because if I or any of you do, we are sentencing Linux to be a second rate Operating System, when it really doesn't belong in that category. Its great to see people talking so great of the operating system you have accepted as the operating system that has almost everything. But I know that it hurts when you see it being put down in the wrong light, but the thing one has to realize is that some things are true and some things are lies, and you have to be able to know tell which is which, so if you know how to program, pick up the source code is a check it out, if you find a better way to do something make the changes, change it and see if it puts out the proformance you want, and send it to Linus, or who ever is incharge of that peace of code. Thats all I have to say. Oh yeah Debian Rocks!!! hahaha

There are a few replies that I probably could surmize have been written by the microsoft camp, and I guess this could be beneficial to wake up some of you coders out there. I look at all these reports in this light, nothing is ever perfect but things can always get better, NT needs to, and so does Linux. Now you all can argue to the degree to which each OS needs to improve, but I think the thing you have to realize, the enemy is our own pride, the competition, is microsoft, this is how we have to see it.

Invision a new reality, a new world

  7. Just harder to get... on Playstation 2 Under Export Controls · · Score: 2

I would like to pose two scenarios and ask what would happen in each case. What if our government imposed censorship on the net, and lets say 50 people which is really an unrealistic number actually broke our law, would we actually go to their country, pull them out and bring them here to be prosecuted? Now magnify that at least 900 fold, and think of this, where is the money coming from to prosecute these people? Now think of this situation of the playstation 2, people will get it illegally, just like alot of illegal CDs coming out of China of our best software, our best games. It usually seems that it is a desire that we want our technology to not get into enemy hands, but what exactly is our government doing to check that other countries that are fortunate to be able to get our technology also has some form or checking mechanism in place and that would be used on our behalf? Just a few questions, that I wanted to have answers to the next time I get into a conversation *smirks*

I don't know if you did this in high school or college, when you had a result that you knew couldn't be right, you forged the data within 12 percent of what you expected, and then at the end of the paper, you put in your conclusion, what could be the cause of such errors. I think they forged the data to what they wanted, because another test done by Micrograf proves differently. What I would suggest is Redhat or someone else proform the exact test and see what yah really get. I know there was a paper a while back about 2 years ago that showed the defects in NT's 4.0 proformace. the link is still around http://www.ugraf.com/unix-nt/jt/
