The choice I have, which very few people have, is to get ISDN service (at no charge, just have to pay the line fee) from an ISP I do work for, or DSL service (I'm only 2 miles from the S.W.Bell a.k.a Ma Bell CO)to have a fat pipe. With new advancements from different technologies there will be competition from other companies besides cable and DSL, hell even your local power company wil be serving up broadband within a 1-2 years. Plus you are looking at cables saying "Why spend the money to develop new and faster networks that will be used by other companies to take our revenue away". The "Last Mile" is too young a market to have the feds crap all over it. Be patient. THer will be more choices Directly. So for right now all I have to say is "Hands off MY BANDWITH"!!!!!!.
The only problem I see with increased competition is the more competition the more users on the network. I have road runner cable service with multimedia cable. And right now it rocks, I am just worried that the networks will be opened up and I will have to say bye bye to 800K combined download speeds. Man I am happy to pay jacked up prices and deal with crappy customer serivce, like I ever call them, as long as my pipe stays fat I don't care.
Tech Support? We don't need no stinking tech support. I just want the cable networks to stay closed. Once they open there will be a rush AOL type Lusers and my bandwith will fall to the floor.
Technology doesn't reduce time it takes to do something it just redirects where you spend your time. Fixing tehcnology so you can make a spreadsheet takes just as long as it does to make a spreadsheet by hand. In the old days (we are talking way lo'tek)1700's or so you had to spend all day either farming or hunting to get your food. Now days you have to work at your job all day and then fight to drive through traffic to get to the store. The amount of time you use getting food is the same it is just redirect into other vehicles to get you to the same point. Technology itself is inert. It has no prejeduices to be one thing or another it is all in the way you use it.
The whole point to his article is it does not matter what you think. It matters only to the parents and the kids. Basically if it is not your kid then shut up.
Of course the parents of the children who where killed aren't responsible. To imply any one was suggesting they where is totally idiotic. But the parents of the children killing every body sure fucked up somwhere along the line. I swear people should have to get a license to have children.
"The age-old libertarian fallacy rearing its ugly head once more. "
That is not a libertarian fallacy but a truth. The only problem with the libertarian philosphy is that we have to many dumb asses in the world like you who won't take responsibility for their own lifes and actions and want some one or something else to do it for them. Then people like me who do take responsiblity for our own actions get screwed buy havning to pay for well fare and have limitations on my freedom. I guess you chalk the Colorado shootings up to violoence in the media and in video games right? IF that where true then I would have killed a ton of people by now. A little tip, try using logic sometime, it is amazing what you can figure out.
To think that any type of censorship is good is not a very enlighted view point. When the option to review any type of information (and I do mean any) is taken away then you have stuck a knife deep into the heart of humanity. The heart of humanity depends on one's ability of self-determination,free will, and the ability to think for one's self. If the legislation gets passed (which I strongly hope it doesn't)believe me there will be 1,000s and 1,000s of minors across aussie land that know just as much if not more than the isps they surf from and will easilly get around any firewall (i.e. proxy surfing). They will be exposed to these images anyway but not be provided with tools to correctly interpret them for society has tried to deny the very existsance of such things. With censorship comes denial, denial of the cruel and sick actions that people take against one another. Out of sight out of mind, is the logic used by Moral-Nazis and once out of mind, educating children about the horrors and bad things in this world will never take place. If it is censored then it will never happen, and if it never happens then we don't need to educate children that there are pedophiles out there and people who commit hideous acts against one another. The moment that happens people will have never been given the critical thinking skills to understand the consequences of violence and cruelty. A time will come when the child doesn't know how to interpet violent images that is displayed before them. In that same moment society has failed, the children have never been given the analytical skills needed to survive in this cruel world. Once a human's thought process is controlled by another person or a group of people that person ceases to be a human and is reduced to a common animal. Self-determination is not a privelege it is a right bestowed upon us all upon entrance into this world of humans. When self-determination is gone we are no loner humans but midless zombies. Censorship is never the answer, violence and scum is all around us and taking it of the ineternet will not make it go away it will still fester around the globe. The only thing you have done is denied access to information that can let you understand how it works and why and only by knowing those things can we stop it. When a tree in a forest falls it still makes a sound regardless if there is anyone there to hear it or not. LET THE BITS BE FREE!!!! P.S. AS for the school not being able to get the proxy to work right they should have hired a professional. Damn do it yourselfers screwin it up fer everbody
Yes we have yet another person who claims to know what the hell they are talking about when they have no idea. I get so sick of the "I never smoked it but I have enough information make an assumption about something I know nothing about". That is like someone saying, "I have never written in PEARL but I looked at some source code once and PEARL sucks". Lets just chalk this loser up to the "I can't think for myself so I will just believe whatever T.V. tells me" campaign. You may hate PotHeads but us PotHeads hate idiots like you.
I can't tell if you are stupid or just ingnorant. More than likely just ingnorant (yes there is a difference). I hate to sterotype you but since you just regurtitated every stereotype about drugs you have ever heard (which I might add is meaningless propaganda half the time). This does not surprise me in the least bit since you obivously don't have the ability to think for yourself. Drugs are not an inherent evil, they do not automatically make you brain turn into sludge the moment you take them. A tool is only what you make of it and by itself it is inert, drugs are a tool, for construction or destuction is always up to the user. Drugs can be used to enlight your mind and view problems in a completely new prospective. Not long ago idiotic media re-spewing trash such as yourself used to piss me off, but now I just remind myself that these statements are made by somone who has no conept of what they are talking about and can only go by what the media puts in their scrawny little mind. Computers never made more sense to me than when i was 16 years old, I sat down in front of a computer screen on 5 hits of really good cid and went "Yeah..... It all makes since now".
Libel has nothing to do with copyright issues. Use your dictionary. Also obscenity ca n be quite funny. I didn't get to see the strips but I don't thing you create the definition of what is funny.
Do you really think they tried that hard at all to find documentation. Any one who has worked with computers for a few years and has an average intellect can buy book from RedHat or O'rielly read it and have their machine rockin in few days. The fact is they had MS backing from the word go and made as little effort as possible to get documentation/help and still be able to say "Oh, we tried to find documentation but is was sooooo hard to find that we gave up." Bull$h1t, RedHat is not stupid enough to say no where not going to help with your benchmark test. But if Mindcraft called into normal technical support and said yeah "I need to optimize this or that" of couse that tech guy is going to say no. If they would have approached RedHats PR department (which I bet anything that they didn't)and said "hey we're doing some benchmarks against NT for international publishing and we need help optimizing linux for the tests." I guarntee that there would have a whole slew of techies pimping out that box in no time flat. This isn't anybodies fault but Mindcarft's.
....at least from what I have seen. I consult to a large base of buisness and for the most part that is what I see when I walk into the server room (of course I try to get that changed at least more memory anyway). But from what I have seen in the industry that is fairly the norm.
Was it just me or did anbody else notice the lack of logic in any of his statments. He never gave any reasons for his conclusions, it sounded as if he were pulling things stratight out of his arse. He may have expanded upon his reasoning in the actuall speach but fortunately the media prints only tib bits of what people say. Which for the most part is bad but in this case it worked very well to make Billy Boy sound like he has no logic or data to backup his claim. Unfortunately quite a few people in this world accept things at face value insteading of looking for the underlying reasoning
I just started working with linux about 1 year and half ago and when I started working with linux the first thing I did was load it on my old 486 at home. I bought a book and was able to install everything with a minimal amount problems (took me like a whole saturday). It took me about 3 days to tweak everything to get my box to run at optimal levels, and not at any point did I find it difficult to find help or documentation. I went from knowing absolutely nothing about any flavor of UNIX to serving up web pages and having my own mail server in less then a week, and my box was screaming. It is was all due to the fact that I could get good documentation and I could find help. Posting a few things to a news group doesn't count as looking for documentation. If they had a problem getting info then they just didn't try very hard. Of course this is based on the assumption that these people are farily intelligent. If they are just morons then yeah I can see the problem.
I work for a consulting/ISP company. We run both NT 4.0 w/IIS 4.0 and Linux (RH 5.2) w/ Apache. We run comercial websites off of our NT and Linux boxes with our user pagers are only served up by apache. We run 2 nt boxes to be able to run all the NT APPs (IIS, exchange, SMB, SQL etc..)and still have reliable perfomance for our internal network and for our customers. Both NT boxes are on dual 266 pentiumII with 128 megs o' ram and we still have to devide up services between the boxes so they're not bogged down all the time (tried running everything on one box and it sucked a$$). Whereas our linux box is a pentium 75 128 megs o'ram and serves up http, smtp, dns, pop3, samba, routing and a whole slew of other services. In short to be able to run all the services we have on pentium 75 linux box (very very cheap)would take several dual PII266 boxes (at about $1600 a pop). And I won't even go into how long each machine says it has been up for. So there is MY bench test the old tried and true real world bench test.
Have you ever been to America? Have you meet the entire population of America? If you answer no to either of these then you have no idea what you are talking about. Which gives one the impression that you are just a mindles media-drone who only knows what the media tells you. Of course some of the law suits are getting way out of hand... but they're not going to print huge stories about all the people who do take responsiblity for thier actions. If they did then I would be really worried. The media reports on what is sensational or out of the norm. Any anaylitical mind can deduce that what is reported in the media is not the average every day occurence, or else it wouldn't be news worthy. So you really made yourself sound like a little punk a$$ with no independant thought process at all.
Just wondering what sources you had saying there where more lawsuits in the early 20s. I read an article in Time a few months ago saying frivolous lawsuits have been on the rise for the past 20 years. Of course there may have been a dip and now they are coming back up
HERE IS WHERE YOU CAN READ THE REPORT, YOU BOZOS!!

WSJ Says Linux Lags

Regardless of the report the WSJ really took things out of context. And that is where the FUD is coming from. You have to be able to smell it.....
Pre-packaged installs from OEMS will takecare of that problem all together. Gnome is just as easy as windows. Maybe installing new hardware and what not is a little more difficult for the computer neophyte but hell my mom can't do that on windows anyway, so it really doesn't matter. Everything that would be a problem for mother or grandmother to do ona linux box would still be a problem for them on windows and vise versa would teu as well.
The virus writer is not pulling the proverbal triger, the user is. If I had a gun and you took that gun and shot yourself in the head I am not responsible for that.
No the MAC address is hardcoded into the chipset on the NIC and is unique. To change it, it would probably take some sort of flash update simmilar to flashing a BIOS.
The only problem with that is, cracking an AOL account is about as tough as tearing wet toilet paper (uh not that I have ever done that). One of two things is happening here either this guy is really stupid and didn't think to use a laptop a payphone and a cracked account (which I think is unlikely cause of the other Macro Virii I have seen VicodenES put out which are simple, sleek and very effective, that is not the type of thing you see an idiot do). Or this guy is a patsy and the FBI are just looking for headlines saying we nailed him.
It makes life harder for stupid people. As for security people hey I am a consultant and computer virii dectection and removal is very lucrative. I have billed out about $3,000 dollars on the Mellissa virus scare alone, not even to mention the class.poppy or happy 99 or Stoned.... etc. etc. etc. If other IS people don't like dealing with these instance (virus infections, security issues) then they need to find another job.
How do you equate bio virus to computer viurs. Lets see here.... one brings down computers and the other kills people. Yeah that makes a whole lotta sense. I bet you got the mellissa virus didn't you. Please at least think about what you type first.
