"Proprietary" in the context I used it is pretty much a synonym for "closed source". So no, Sun cannot include code owned by someone else in their proprietary version of MySQL. That's the whole point of Free Software.
Sun/MySQL can and should be blamed if they are failing the community that made MySQL so popular and strong.
Up front: I think MySQL sucks. Having said that, how dare you blame them for "failing" in any way, having given the community the product in the first place? They released it as Free Software from the beginning. Anything they do after that is just icing on the cake. You can wish that they did things differently, but they don't owe jack to "the community" other than obeying the license on any code that comes back their way.
Well, other than quit lying by saying that you have to buy a commercial license if you want to use MySQL with commercial software. That's irksome and I think they should stop doing that. But besides that, it's their ball and their game.
Another thing - copying from network to \program files is a no-no as long as UAC is enabled. I'm a developer so I want to copy my own executables on test system.
Purely for my own curiosity: can't you run them off the fileserver?
BTW, Ubuntu's "Netbook Remix" desktop is absolutely brilliant on tiny netbooks like the 701. It's as easy to use as the Xandros desktop, but fully functional and customizable.
The Economist ~ understates ~ the advantages of being able to run your Windows apps on your netbook
Like what? The traditional "gotta have Windows!" fallbacks are games and vertical apps like CAD stuff. I have never heard of anyone wanting any of that on a netbook. Instead, I see a lot of people checking their mail, surfing (I'm typing this on an Eee 701), and word processing. Windows has no advantages on those activities in the netbook market.
and there is really nothing in F/OSS of interest to the general consumer market that isn't available for Windows.
Yeah? The lack of a Windows tax seems to be pretty interesting.
-hard drives grew like crazy earlier this decade, but that growth has dramatically slowed lately, with 750GB being the largest in 2006, 1TB early in 2007, and 1.5 late in 2008
When did they grow much faster than doubling every two years?
On the other end, I'm still driving a '98 Oldsmobile Intrigue because it handles like a dream in the weather we get here, has a great stereo, is incredibly comfortable for tall people, has all the power you could want in a familymobile, and hasn't needed a single repair outside regular maintenance. It's sad to me that Detroit can build good cars when they want to, but would rather concentrate on making Behemoth With Towing Package (And Built-In Tent), and those in non-American plants.
If either side had done some research or better communicating before yelling on the internet, this would have been a non-issue.
In fairness to Starks, if I'd been threatened with having the cops called on me for something perfectly innocuous, I might've responded as he did. In hindsight it wasn't that big of a deal, but her opening salvo was fired from an elephant gun.
Even if it beat Linux or OS X or every other OS on the planet at speed, the naysayers would still say that it doesn't matter because it's unstable, or too easily compromised, etc.
If that ever gets remotely close to happening, we'll find out. Until then, it's like speculating what would happen if Apple paid you to use a Mac.
So Vista is slower on the same hardware? Big deal, every Microsoft OS is. Win98 RAN well with 64MB of RAM, and took a couple hundred megabytes of disk. Try doing that with XP.
Fixed that for you. Linux gets faster on the same hardware because of new schedulers, etc. OS X 10.4 was markedly faster than 10.3. Face it: slowdowns with time are a Microsoft invention and not something that the rest of the industry takes for granted.
There is a lot of niche hardware out there that will never have 64-bit drivers. Many of the users of such hardware, such as big industrial and R&D companies, are very important customers for MS.
And how many of those drivers run on 32-bit Vista?
So, it seems to me that anonymity is a symptom of the problem rather than the fundamental right that is being violated.
We'd have to agree to disagree. Suppose I saw my next door neighbor kill someone, and he's from a huge family of drunken rednecks. We currently get along because I go my way and they go theirs, but I want as little as possible to do with them. I want to tell the police but I do not want my name on the report lest I get killed.
Anonymity because you'll get fired if you write someone on your blog is sad. Anonymity because you'll die if you're caught speaking is a good thing.
If the allegations are true, then they really are pirates in that they committed widespread unauthorized commercial distribution of copyrighted software.
No. Al Gore is a preacher. Don't forget 50% of the people in the country hate him, which may constrain his effectiveness. Too much baggage.
Beyond that, he's just not a scientist. I have much more faith in the scientific advice of a Nobel physics prize winner than I do Gore. It's largely a matter of trust. Even if Chu and Gore were to make the same recommendation, a huge chunk of America would believe that Gore made it for political reasons while Chu made it because it was good science.

Twice, even.
I don't HATE Microsoft like so many people do. Making money is not evil.
Note: I strongly dislike Microsoft, but not because they're profitable.
Can you detect when people are purposefully ignoring it? The quickest way to get people to stop being sarcastic is to take them literally.
I am tired of people trying to appear insightful by stating an obvious irony in a sneering and sometimes exaggerated way
I bet you're fun at parties.

If it's all OSS, then why isn't MySQL picking up the best 3rd party pieces and rolling them back into the official distribution?
Because they wouldn't be able to include those parts in the proprietary version?

Sure, because it means you made a mistake. Green will be depressing as soon as it comes to imply that Little Johnny is less than perfect.
Look, I'm all about teaching responsibility and consequences of your actions,
No, you're not.
but why are you punishing a child for an accident?
There's a huge difference between punishing him and not buying him a replacement.

it makes even less sense to support capital punishment while claiming to be pro-life and calling the use of emergency contraceptives "murder."
Similarly, it makes little sense to support abortion while decrying capital punishment. The view opposing yours would be:
Neither your post nor mine above represent my views. I'm just pointing out that there are consistent viewpoints which differ from yours.
By the way, that's another way of saying "fuel".
On the down side, he then introduced the President, who of course did.
Just like Jimmy "Nukular Sub" Carter before him. ;-)
