  1. Re:Inaccurate on Serious Security Flaw in MSIE 5.01, 5.5 · · Score: 1

Let's not joke around. Microsoft saw Netscape as a threat. The ability to run applications in a web browser decreased the value of the MS Operating Sytstems. Below are key points:

Microsoft bundled a web browser with it's OS. No, MS didn't just bundle some components. It included a complete software application w/ it's OS.

    > KDE would have exactly this flaw if the
    > Konquerer component had this flaw and an e-mail
    > reader used the component.

What is the point of that statement? A would have this flaw if A had this flaw? Well.. yeah. But the point is it doesn't. And even if it did. You have the source. Even more important, you have choice. GNOME? KDE? WIN32?

This isn't idiotic MS bashing. MS is building us a world where we have no choice but to have security flaws.

Ugh.. I'll stop MS bashing when MS stops taking advantage of me and other consumers.

For those of you in the Bay Area there is a great bar in San Francisco called POW!. This is a small hangout, that still hasn't been completely overridden by the dot-com black leather jacket hipsters yet. It's got great atmosphere, several Playstation 2 consoles, and a Dreamcast. In addition, they play anime and 80s cartoons on a large screen in the back, and they have great drinks. It's in a fairly seedy section of town (6th street) but it's great. Tonight they're having their full moon party, so if anyone is interested, come on down!

It's a great jumping off point if you're clubbing down in SOMA, or you can stay all night. Good restuarants near by, such as Tu Lan (Vietnamese), Original Joe's (Italian), and Taqueria Can Cun (mexican). Just a great fucking place to put it simply.

Oh yeah, it's on the corner of 6th street and Mission street.

I'm hoping we can solve this by making it a strong norm to use vibrating modes, headphone alerts, or other non-intrusive methods. We must socialize these people to respect others because it's right, not because they have no other choice.

Jammers only destroy, we want things that can create and facilitate creation here in our world.

Woah there. San Francisco, which is just north of San Jose, has a great city life. Every day this week I've gone out and done something (now that I got laid off in the great crash of 2001 I have some free time again!) It's a great city to party in, to meet people, and just have fun. And Detroit is a good place to go if you like the city life too. I used to live in MI, and about once a month, would drive down from Mt. Pleasant or Saginaw to party in Detroit.

I think both CA and MI have their strong points and weak points. But the truth is, I think there's something about the artistic minded/rebellious SF/Berkeley that fuels the startup mindset. As Dave Eggers put it, everyone had some dumb idea, and no one there would tell you yours was doomed. Ann Arbor has something like this, but is it enough?

Now here's an interesting question though. I have a copy of it. I have not listened to it at all. What are the moral implications of that? To my computer, it's just a collection of arbitrary bits. Metallica certainly wouldn't have a problem with me lending a CD out to a friend, would they? What about if I ripped the CD, then destroyed it. Could I enjoy it on my computer? Now what if I didn't listen to it, but e-mailed it to my friend Bob? Suppose I keep one song, and e-mail one song to each of my friends? According to copyright law, I believe we can make backup copies, correct?

Yeah, I could have read up on copyright law and answered these questions myself, but what I'm more concerned with is ethics, what is right and wrong, not necessarily what works for the lawyers.

I find it hard to take an article seriously if they use an "authoritative" source on neuropsychology who states that serotonin is a hormone. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter, NOT a hormone. Second, the output of serotonin from the presynaptic neuron is NOT hugely affected by MDMA (X), it is the reuptake that is affected. Plus, "the brain has to work really hard to get it back"?! Yes, X and coke inhibit the reuptake of dopamine and serotonin, but the body has no problem generating more, or reuptaking it once the drugs affects have worn off. The problem the body encounters is the post-synaptic receptors adaption to the large levels of serotonin in the synapse.

But when a spammer sends spam directly to MY mailbox, I consider that an invasion of privacy. The same goes for telephone solicitors. What if you found your e-mail address or phone number posted on a bathroom wall? (USENet groups are pretty close, but they don't count , when we post our e-mail addys to USENET, we are posting to a group of people we generally trust. If someone posted your e-mail address to alt.binaries.pictures.erotica.hamsters, you would most likely get upset.

So I don't know the correct answer. But I think that spammers are violating our rights, and not just because it shifts the cost onto us. If you're in a public place, and someone is speaking, you can just walk away. If you get an e-mail, you have to either read it or delete it.
