    I know it's called security. That's why you only run secure services. If they aren't secure, you secure them. The theory behind a firewall is that it is placed in front of already-secure hosts. If you're placing a firewall in front of hosts that aren't secure, you're just kidding yourself.

    And when your firewall falls over? Why bother to have multiple servers when your firewall becomes a single point of failure?

    If it takes N cpu seconds to deal with a load, and you have 1 server which can deal with the load, why not put that server into service. On average, the same load will be present across all your servers, and you'll have eliminated a single point of failure.

    Look, there's a very simple reason that the moon landings were faked. For the whole period, Mars was in Aquarius (remember, "the age of Aquarius"), and it was a completely inauspicious time for outer-space exploration. Any moon landings would have gone off-course, or crashed and burned. So they faked it. What's the big deal about that?

    The real question is: where did they film the moon landings, and how did they get such sharp, realistic-looking shadows? I can't imagine it was out-of-doors, unless they filmed it all at night away from any city glow with kleig lights.

    Yes, we have no control over that use, but neither does RMS have any control over how people use "free software".

    Most people who have never heard from RMS understand the term "free software" to mean gratis software -- software without cost. Microsoft uses it that way. That's why it's bad to use the term "free software" unless you're going to include a spare RMS with every instance to explain what it really means.

    Yes, I know RMS says that, but he's wrong. There is no OSI Certified Open Source Software which is not free software by his definition. And there will never be as long as I'm on the board.

    They are free to claim it, but as you can see from surveying the comments, most users can see through their nonsense. Any software that isn't free software cannot be Open Source. A simple look at the Open Source Definition will show you that.

    That's why you use the GPL, so that you limit the profits of anyone who uses your source code. Professionals and businesses tend to use the GPL, whereas amateurs and non-profits use the BSD license. With the GPL, you get the benefits of Open Source, and (as long as you are careful to get copyright assignments) you can license the code for proprietary uses in addition.

    Because Open Source means more than just being able to see the source. Heck, I have a source code file of MS-DOS 1.0 and its COMMAND.COM (no, you can't have a copy). Anybody who's moderately clever can reverse-engineer code to produce a source file.

    What makes Open Source interesting is that you can change and/or redistribute the code.

    If you'll check the Open Source Definition, you'll see that restrictions on type endeavor are not present in Open Source licenses. Therefore, restrictions on non-commercial use disqualify the software from being Open Source.

    Source to the PC/Tel linmodem is not available. As far as I can tell, no vendor is EVER going to release the source, because they feel that the FCC would consider them in violation of the law.

    And no, Linus interprets the GPL as having no standing over separate binaries designed to be linked into the kernel.

    Yes, however they haven't released it to the general public -- only to their customers. And their customers are the people who put PC/Tel chips on boards. So if you want the PC/Tel linmodem, you have to ask the people who sold you the board.

    A higher percentage of the Hong Kong middle class (that is, middle-class incomes) have a net worth over a million dollars than middle-class in the US. And the *reason* for that is because of the low tax rate in Hong Kong.

    Many people in Hong Kong end up millionaires. Why? Because they aren't taxed to death. Most people in the middle class in America could save a million dollars over the course of their life (do the math), except for taxes.

    p.s. people make a lot of the shootings in the old west frontier, which didn't suffer from an excess of government. However, the death rate was much lower than today's New York, Detroit, or Washington, D.C.
    p.p.s. the most organized of the criminals can be found in the legislature of any government.
