For a commuter our long-distance trucker, both the problems solved and the resultant benefits are clear. But suppose instead one were a potential terrorist, something akin to a suicide bomber. The problem to be solved is different; it's that suicide thing.
There are a lot of ways self-driving technology could be used in horrible, frightening ways. Details depend on what kinds of vehicle operation would eventually be allowed, and I won't engage discussion here. My conclusion is simply that the potentials cannot be eliminated without too severely limiting utility.
