Farming is something that needs to be done locally in order to be naturally efficient. Otherwise, you end up with a few huge farms, all trying to cut all corners (in order to be efficient) as much as possible - usually by using fertilizers and insecticides that are bad for the environment. After that comes the need to modify plant DNA to grow bigger/faster/bug-and-weed-resilient crops.
Yeah man, and that means that everyone that works (8hr. days) is almost working an entire hour per day just to pay for those that cannot afford food. Of course I'm referring to the taxes that accumulate from them working that hour, and not their hourly rate.
How cool would it be if you could use food stamps to buy things that are required to have your own organic garden at home? This could include tools, education on farming, seeds, greenhouses, utility-water-line, chlorine-filter, etc. The government could even set aside land for small community gardens, like they do to build parks for recreation.
Well, I certainly didn't mean to attack anyone, I just didn't really know that my comments would hurt feelings. And perhaps you're right, maybe I don't understand why 'sorting a list in the quickest way possible, being made into a game' is useful. Can you enlighten me?
One of the field's many problems is the lack of a good definition for intelligence.
Well, I don't mean to sound like I know everything, I certainly don't. But in my mind, 'intelligence' is the ability to make sense of Nature (or another way to say this is to be able to sense Nature). Those that don't have a good definition for 'intelligence' more than likely are living in a way that is not in tune with Nature.
They're probably dorking around with some regex, trying to sort a list of stupid from silly. Not saying that you, sir, are (as from the tone of your response, it appears that you are a sensible person). But From my original post, I should have guessed that it'd be flamebait, rather than troll.
Isn't it strange how we hear about these types of 'services' going down, but we never hear about them going up? Am I missing something? By the looks of it, many people are like me in that they didn't know that this service existed at all. Is there a place that Google let's people know when they have a new service? It's not listed here anywhere (maybe it's been removed already since it's about to be dumped). But is this a complete list?
Ok, I get the need for optimization of coding habits. But as far as I understand this article however, it's about solving the XKCD "problem" - how to write a formula that separates elected presidents from unelected presidents. If I'm wrong, then I'm sorry. I read a bit of the article, and determined that it was a shot at being nifty - trying to get a bunch of brogramers to 'stroke out the biggest cock, in the shortest amount of time' sorta thing.
Ok, mod me troll, but...
Regex me a list of folks that have time to sit around fucking off their life-time in order to write a regex to work on the XKCD "problem", and folks that don't. And for the folks that are working on this, is this one of those things that you need 2 monitors for? I mean honestly, who in the hell has time to fuck off like this, and why? If you were going to school for coding, and your teacher gave you this as an assignment, I imagine that it'd be one of those things that you'd gripe about 'having' to do, and how stupid it is - a waste of time. And you'd be right.
That's the key, it's different platters. One cake may have eggs and the other doesn't have eggs. Or, in the universes theory, one may have gravity as we understand it, and another may have it slightly different, or not at all. Certain realities about our universe, like the distance of a circle's diameter to it's radius, may be different in other universes.
We cannot understand how this could actually be so, seeing as how we live in this universe, but the mathematical properties at their roots, could be altered, in theory, to create a whole entire set of circumstances that give rise to a completely set of 'things'. it's purely mathematical theory, and should never be interpreted to mean that these other universes would matter to us, but to exclude the possibility of them, is outright wrong, mathematically.
Well, other than it being really cool that you responded to a slashdot article, as the guy involved, it's also really cool to know that you, the company and the police are all doing what seems to be the right thing. In my country (USA) you'd be handled by the FBI ( I guess, even though they're now only handling "national security") and be told that you're a criminal, and charges would mount until you'd rather be dead.
Glad to see that the whole world isn't fucked up. And thanks again for posting!
Wow. All I can say is wow. You, the person (if that's true, which I have no way to verify) with any real information regarding this, submit information as it is to you (the only one with any actual information regarding this), and you get modded only to +4 Informative. Hell, I've been modded +5 Informative in the past, simply for copy/pasting some information from a link in the summary.
Ok, so then let's try to verify what happened. How did you find "...a basic security hole that allowed him to access a database containing sensitive information for about 600,000 public transport users who made purchases through the Metlink web site run by the Transport Department."? Why would the cops be 'after' you?
So if I have this right (regardless what caused these assholes to close the bridge), then if terrorists hate the American government, they take it out on The People of America (Oklahoma City Bombing, 9/11, Boston Marathon, etc...), and now if the American government hates the American government, they take it out on The People of America, too. Ouch, my country hurts!
It is really telling that our 'leaders' are criminals, and that they employ people that we commonly call 'the police' to uphold laws, and that those 'police' guys are so 'blinded by their own sense of importance' that they won't put their bosses in jail, all because of 'the chain of command'. It's this 'chain of command', and why it's followed as it currently is, that's the real telling thing in America these days.
At some point The People are going to wake up to the fact that criminals run this place in an orderly fashion. Imagine how nice things could be if normal honest people ran $the_country (because this goes for all countries). Or, is that even possible? I hear that power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Dunno...
That wouldn't have been necessary. It looked like some person got off work (around 5pm), and went and filled up their vehicle, and a boat, or some other large-capacity vehicle.
And I'm not sure if you've ever noticed, but cashiers are supposed to match the name on your license with the name on whatever credit card you're purchasing with. What would be different here?
It may be because of the same reason that you're posting as AC. Also, this article is a bit... odd. It's not announcing any sort of breakthrough, just theory. And who isn't tired of theories, especially on Slashdot.
Well, point taken. But not long ago, a friend's card was stolen, so he cancelled it. The next month, he got a bill from the credit card company. It appeared that the thief went and filled up his gas-tank, as well as either a buddy's, or a boat or something, 3 Fridays in a row, same gas station, roughly same time of the day. The credit card company assured him that he wasn't expected to pay, and that they'd cancelled the card. next month, same thing, roughly same amount, roughly same time, same day (Friday) same gas station. Again he called, same response - "no worries". Next month, same thing. Finally he told them, "He look, this guy's going to be there next Friday at about [whatever time it was], why not just have the cops waiting? They basically told him that sometimes it takes a while before the gas station pumps are capable of registering that the card is bad/cancelled, and that there was no need to alert the police.
To me, this is an indicator that they don't care. I mean, that card was their property, and they knew that it was being used illegally, and yet they didn't want to get the police involved. I mean, it's not a shit-ton of money, maybe $400/month, but for 3 months? Of course, this may just be a 'bug' in their system, to do with gas tanks specifically, and maybe now that bug is fixed. But the people that he spoke with on the phone never had a doubt in their minds as to what to tell him. They never had to ask a manager, or anything like that. As though that type of thing happens a lot, and they knew how to 'handle' it.
Credit and debt go hand in hand. It's the American dream, in reality. You have a card where you are able to spend money that not only do you not have, but doesn't exist at all. Once enough people are in debt to that system, then money (debt) prints itself. It's the American dreamers that make this possible. Hell, the credit card companies don't even give a shit about theft anymore. They're doing to you, what you originally tried to do to them - have money that doesn't even exist. Except, for them, there are legal benefits to being on their side of the game. And rather than money, they live/exist off of debt.
Don't forget that all money that's printed, represents a debt. In this way, the credit card companies (basically the elite) live off of debt, not money.
Well, in Alaska you actually can buy bows and arrows with food stamps.
That's thinking along the same lines as I am. And why not be able to use food stamps for food-creating-tools?

Here's a good Ted-talk on this very matter. Feel free to mock Ron Finley too. I mean, omg, he's so ghetto! (tongue-in-cheek)

AND YET THEY OCCUPY THE SAME PLATTER.

Why do cosmological theories of any merit always sound like they were written by Douglas Adams?
Because Douglas Adams was a genius in all ways possible.
That's amazing, seeing as how they could prove it very easily (plane ticket purchase would require photo ID matching the passenger).
What credit card company was this? I may need to look into getting back into credit cards if it's this easy these days to sluff off charges.
Apathy * power = terrorism
You're probably correct, but who signs that back of their credit cards anymore?

Holy crap! Did you have to pay the bill, or did they just eat it?
I think it'd cost a lot, and may take waay to much time, as apparent this isn't "Timmy" but rather Timmmyyhh!
That wouldn't have been necessary. It looked like some person got off work (around 5pm), and went and filled up their vehicle, and a boat, or some other large-capacity vehicle.
