Full length swat shields? What a clever sounding idiotic idea.
Even if you STOP the.50 cal bullet with your shield you still have to deal with the kinetic energy of the bullet. One hit and the officer would be down with multiple fractures, not to mention it'd probably knock them back into last week. Those swat shields aren't there to stop bullets so much as they are to stop cans, and sticks and baseball bats. Things with not near the kinetic energy of a.50 cal bullet. Using this material to make a swat shield would be overkill, expensive and fairly useless.
Why don't we try to build better peaceful people. I'm rather tired of all this military spending. If we'd just spend all the money we waste on bombs on feeding the hungry and sheltering the homeless throughout the world I'm sure we'd have alot fewer people to throw those bombs at.
Having just applied the combo patch in question, I can attest to it's incredible improvement. My mouse pointer NEVER lags anymore even while make -j5 bzImage and bzip2'ing a large directory all while playing.ogg files. This is wonderful. Kudo's and a round of whatever ya drink to the kernel crew.

First aquire one bungy cord aprox. 75% of the length of your hill.
Tie the other end of the bungy cord to your waist.
Sled.
At the bottom, the bungy cord should kick in and fling you back UP the hill.
This solves two problems. 1: How to not hit the "Dangerous" trees. 2: A way around the pesky problem of having to climb back up the hill.
Anyone who has read the Ender Series knows that Card is here for quite a while. If you have never read the Ender Series I sugest you pick up the following:
Enders Game - Chosen for his unique mix of ruthlessness and compassion, Ender, a "third" is taken from his family to lead the United Earth Forces against an alien threat known only as the "buggers" .
Speaker For the Dead - Enders life continues as a cleric of a humanistic religion, known as a "Speaker for the dead" this book centers around the life of a new race of aliens found on a remote planet collonized by portoguese catholics.
Xenocide - Continuing the story of Ender, and his friends, this story is a continuation of Speaker for the dead, and revolves around the personal struggles of the main characters, including a few "Pequinos " or Little ones, and Jane a sentient computer being.
Children of the Mind - Resolving the issues of all for alien speicies know in the universe, "ender" dies, and the storie resolves the life of Jane, the buggers, and the Pequinos.
These are a "must read" for any serious Sci-Fi fan.
1: Look at what Red hat did with Tux
2: look at the past few days of/. postings regarding Tux vs appache vs IIS... specificly the comment about CGI being out of date in realtion to IIS 5.0's ISAPI.
3: Red Hat annouces A database.
Interesting eh?
Here's my $20.00, I'm betting Red Hat has found a way to tie a database system / databse server system into tux, and into the kerenel. Imagine the power of a kernel space http server, combined with a kernel space (or something simalar to tux) RDBMS. tied together with a API to rival ISAPI... I wonder if the chili soft ASP! people have caught wind of this yet.... could really turn a few heads.
Texas broke off as a province from mexico, in the 1840's true. However they never seceded from the us. in fact we asked to join the union. get your facts strait, just because the mason dixon line was above TX doesn't mean that all the states south of it seceded.
Cards most famous work, deals with characters that are about her age (13ish). Enders game is a brilliant peace of work, and I would recomend it over anything else listed here. the rest of the enders series (speaker for the dead, Xenocide, and children of the mind of christ) are some of the best books ever written... buy you neice his work, and you will enrich her life, with the words of the greatest sci-fi writer of all time

Why should Geeks be ridiculed and harrased just because we chose a different "sport"... I think Aaron has a great Idea. It should be suported and the Idea should be ran with.
Don't you think that this is some what selfish. your statment, "It's all wonderful that you've got a new job.. but we want to know how this is going to impact the devel of E. is self defeating. And your comments about compatability with Redhat is a Naive and rather rude. To question wether or not any program will be compatible with any distribution is tantamount to saying "screw the other distros" while Red Hat is popular, there are other distributions out there too. Please keep that in mind when making comments. Please also understand that technicly E will work with any distrobution that has suport for the librarys that are needed, basicly any distrobution that has GCC and Glibc, those 2 should (theoreticly) be able to compile any other libary and then the program itself. so weather or Not he makes E "compatable" with Red Hat, is a MUTE point. E is compatable with every linux distrobution that uses Glibc. besides all of the above what do you MEAN by compatable?... does Raster reserve certian features for Red Hat?... does he keep the Red Hat version more up to date than the other distrobutions?... I don't think so.
In short try not to be so rude and uncaring... or if you can't do that... at least try to not butter us up.
While I aggree with most of what the author has said here, there are Times when only money is going to motivate programers GOOD programers to work on that problem. For instance, I have a want for a piece of software, that I don't know how to write... or how to approach to write. What I'm looking for is A Microsoft Proxy Client for Linux. I don't know of any Linux programers willing to work on this, and I've been looking for 4 months... However I think that if I offered some cash for it, maybe I could find someone who would be able to write such a client. Another example was for the longest time, Word processors. We as a linux comunity Needed a good office suite and for a long time, no one would write one, because office suites are boring to code, a pain to debug, and overall just not much fun.
Admitedly I know little about the stock market and etc... but Whats to keep Microsoft from Buying 50.1 percent of the stock? would this give Microsoft control of the company? Could they force Red Hat to NOT use the GPL?
