I haven't ever done it before, but I think this is an apporiate response. I think many of us agree in this forum that the US patent laws need serious re-vamping. I don't think I have ever seen (though I may be wrong) anyone suggest writing their congressman/woman. If something in the government doesn't work, let them know about. If many senators get lots of emails/letters about this, maybe someone will take a hard look at it.
Anyone noticed that IdeaLab owns OpenSales, makers of OpenMerchant (open source e-commerce program). I think it is apporiate to boycott this free software also. opensales
PM is definately worth seeing. It is written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. He is considered one of Japan's greatest movie creators. This is the number 2 money-maker film in Japan. Beaten only by Titanic (never under-estimate the power of millions of teenage girl (he)). Why is it that no one has a problem with stories told using vast amounts of CG (matrix, star wars), but animation is automatically considered 'KIDDIE'. Fiction is a flight into fantasy, why must fantasy always look like reality?
I hate to say it, but it is impressive just to get Linux versions about the same time as Windows version (heck at all). It costs alot of money to make a game, it make sure it runs on another arch of a OS you are barely supporting anyway is asking quite alot. Now this might have some credit when the Linux version is as popular (or more) as the windows version. I hope developers don't forget about other archs but right now I just like to see good Linux support. Heck I don't even play many games but good game support equals good hardware support (3d video cards, 3d sound drivers, etc.) That is why I'm so excited about Linux game support. Just my 2cents.
Good chance this logo is just a quick "lets change it and not get sued'. They are probably paying someone millions of dollars to come up with a new one. I'll do it for $100K. A green OVAL with the words GO on a yellow TRIANGLE
I have DSL on order from GTE it is $50 a month for 768 down and 128K up. If this drops it to $40-ish a month I wont complain! I'd know that code anywhere! whats up man? drop me an email!
The problem is not the browsers. The problem is the standards. By which I mean their are none. Microsoft implements java and java-script different than Netscape. Netscape didn't fail us, Microsoft hi-jacked Java and Java-script. And Sun took them to court for it. I've been reading alittle more about XML and that is a step in the right direction but it does nothing for Java or JavaScript. The Web is a multiple platform data exchange...web masters and programmers (I am one) need to treat it this way. We need to say damn it Microsoft (or anyone using some closed system), I refuse to use this. Code your web pages so that all people can read them. I guess I should qualify this maybe you don't want to support very old browsers or maybe you do. But don't use CLOSED standards. Only use open published standards so that anyone can write a browser able to understand it. My pages look just as good on linux with netscape (where I write them) as they do on Windows with Netscape or IE.
Well I hate to go against the stream here. But I recently moved to a new state. My old state had some indepedent cable modem service that was more down than up. It sucked. The ping times were horrible. Insight Cable company here in Indiana is offering cable modem service through @HOME. I called and talked to them yesterday. The sales rep I talked to was very forthcoming. I said whats the up/down stream speeds. He said 128K up and up to 1 Meg down. He didnt try to make it sound better than it atually is. They need a tier system like ADSL does. The more up/down you want the more you pay. That is fair. I would get ADSL put the connect fee is $300 here and $60/month for 128k up and 384K down.
I havent been reading Slashdot for very long. Maybe a month. But it seems to me,/. talks alot about other things than Linux. I am glad it does, it talks about precisely what is advertised 'news for nerds' DVD and SCI-FI movies certainly fall within this realm.
So from a site 'newbie' (though not at all new to computers) Keep up the good work/.
Bill would blame this on LILO. He'd say of course we didnt test it with LILO, why would you need anything but Windows NT.
That whole statement was smoke and mirrors. its been said that Linux wasn't good for the average desktop user. Now Bill is saying all it is good at is the simple average user stuff. Make up your Mind....
`People really do want something that's been tested against all the different applications, so that they know exactly what is out there,''-BG
No they don't the average user has no idea what testing has been done or how. If the people want to know whats "out there" (more like in there), they would use Open Source. Download the source and read it yourself then you really know whats "out there".
Of course. The PIII is now out so lets release a big new OS so the new PIII 500 performs exactly the same as last years PII 300. Its amazing that to do such processor light tasks (email surfing IRC ICQ...) consumers seem to think they need a PIII with Windows2000.
I'd have to agree. Altavista was my primary source of searching. I dont mind the ads of top that are revelant to search topic. But purposely disguising Ads and return results, that just plain wrong. Altavista can sell all the ADs they want, but they shouldn't sell search position. Guess I have to try Google or Northern Lights everyone is talking about. Hasta Lavista AltaVista!
Number one and two defendants should be the parents. How can you sue someone for expressing themselves. Do we still have freedom of speech. I know code and computer text is still up in the air about free speech. But a movie is obiviously someones comment on life, society, whatever. Hell code should be protected by free speech also. How old is this kid? 14 okay so Basketball Diaries is rated 'R' so who is responsible (if this is one of the causes)..the makers..no they had it rated (like the were supposed to) hmmm maybe his parents who should be policing what he watches and the games he plays. Most of those game have subjected themselves to rating systems also.
