How about stop using archaic old paper notes? Here in Australia we invented a plastic polymer for our currency which is next to impossible to counterfeit. It has transparent windows in it and holograms and all sorts of complicated stuff that only a govt would be able to reproduce. You can't rip it with bare hands and you can put in in washing machine and it comes out like new. American money by comparison is so primitive that it's laughable. Last time I was there on holiday it felt like I'd gone back in time to the 70's with your crappy old notes. In the 20 years I've lived here I've never heard of counterfeit notes, that is until this week when someone got some out but the copies were so lame it blatantly obvious they were fake.

I see no problem with regulating airline seating. It is clearly a problem that gets raised quite frequently, even resulting in a few diverted flights recently. If the average distance between seats is smaller than the average length between a person's hip and knee, then someone has to step in and sort it out. The Airlines aren't doing it, so sooner or later we're going to get a plane rage incident that result in the loss of life (seriously - we've had case of people going completely off the rails mid-flight over this).

Here is the deal, criminals are criminals. Period. All the rules and regulations in the world won't prevent them from being criminals.

That's not true. In fact you're completely wrong. Criminals are not the Dr Evil types in the movies who just love doing bad stuff. It is precisely this thinking that makes solving the problem of criminal behaviour so tough. Criminals are usually regular people who simply found an opportunity to make some easy profit by breaking the rules. That's all it is. And the easiest fix is regulations to make compliance and easier path than defiance.

Interesting story. I find it ironic that you mention Humboldt County as I was channel surfing just the other night and came across a show called Pot Cops or something. It is set in Humboldt County, and the entire show revolved around these stupid cops chasing their tales trying to bust pot growers despite the fact that the growers had permits for medicinal marijuana. The attitude of the cops was startling. They were visibly angry that they couldn't get these people into jail, and kept calling them criminals despite the fact that everything they were doing was legal. One guy had even been to court a few and found innocent each time. They still arrested him again anyway just because they are bullies. As someone who lives on the other side of the world I couldn't believe how stupid these cops were. So blatantly wrong with their interpretation of the law, and just looking for excuses to push people around, and all of this on camera! Seriously, fuck the police.

I've got an idea for him, an FPS that has no violence that is suitable for kids as well as adults. Just like what the Simpsons did for TV. It was enjoyable for everybody and as such became the most successful show in TV history. I won't let my kids play any current FPS because of the violence part, so they're stuck with Portal. But I'd love for them to develop the intense spatial awareness skills, and fine motor skills of using a mouse and the WASD keys that only FPS can give. What about something cartoony that has humour (sort like Duke Nukem but without the gore)? Surely there is a whole market just waiting for a good FPS that doesn't rely on murdering people?

No it didn't, containment was working up until Bush decided to try and be a hero and blame Iraq for 9/11. Despite it being plainly obvious that Bin Laden and Hussein were enemies. Invading was the greatest gift we could've given the Islamic fundamentalists.

    He invaded Kuwait,

Oh please. He was a friend of the US at the time and had permission from the White House to invade. It was only the worldwide condemnation that forced the US to rescind it's support and try and be World Police. The correct course, as with China, Vietnam, Russia, Zimbabwe, Libya etc etc is to contain and isolate. Invading was a colossal error and we will pay the price for that blunder for at least the next 20 years. George W Bush will go down as stupidest president ever because of it.

The current Middle East situation, which has been going on for centuries is an example of how history can be re-written depending on who won. This was the analogy I believe the other poster was making about LoTR. Don't get bogged down in the analogies, the main point here is that the difference between terrorist and freedom fighter is only who wins the war. We think ISIS are terrorists, Hobbits thought Orcs were terrorists, The British Monarchy though Americans were terrorists at one point in time. If you are learning history, this is probably the most important lesson to begin with.

Sometimes we have to learn that there is no good option, only bad or really bad. I believe we would've been better containing Saddam than the current mess we have.

Trouble is that the specific detail of totally foreign concepts (in pace and time) is boring to kids. Perhaps we should team up with Hollywood to create some blockbuster history films (300, Gladiator, Master and Commander etc) then use these as a base for lessons. Even if the film is mostly crap, it gives a good starting point to conceptualise the time, place and physical limitations that history was faced with. I know I learnt a lot after watching 300, not so much from the movie itself, it was mostly spaghetti, but it sparked the interest in how the real events unfolded, and gave the foundation for understanding all the logistical challenges each side face leading up to, during and after the battle.

  24. The question is, is war actually bad? And before you go off half-cocked, sure it's bad for the people directly in the war-zone, but there are examples were war has then brought unheralded prosperity (ie WW2 might have sucked for the participants, but it was beneficial for a lot of other humans. In fact the most prosperous period of human history is the the Post War era, precisely because of WW2) So yeah maybe there might be a big war, and we'll pay the price, but our grand-kids will probably have much more peaceful lives because of it.

  25. Not the end my friend, the start of the next epoch of humanity. Things need to get worse before they get better, and a proper war (none of the Vietnam/Iraq type fluff, I'm talking full scorched-earth occupation) to wipe out all the trouble makers in the middle east is a good start. If the area in and around Israel was to be nuclear contaminated for the next thousands years, it would be a net gain for the rest of us.
