there is a benifit to doing it in space. they dont have clouds in space. the power production would be constant. this is something that isnt always achieveable on earth.
man usenet has always been the place for things like porn and mp3s. as long as it's not userfriendly enough for senators and lars to use it will remain that way.
i can give you the designs for a car. designs that have been looked over and poked at by skilled car designers all over the web. you can take that design and use it how you will. if you try to sell that design you might be successful a few times but people will catch on. if you take that design and find a novel application for it. exploit that application in a unique and innovative way.. then hey you might make money.
um.. genius. i beleive he was referring to the webhosting companies that are using apache. this is a subtle way of implying that you can take opensource software and make money with it.
that page seems to chronicle aol's lax security and some stuff about them getting cracked by people capable of social engineering. this implies incompetence, but hardly justifies the term evil.
while i agree that microsoft has done some really nasty stuff in the past, has aol done anything besides being huge? this isnt a troll, i really havent followed aol that much and i am wondering what it is that they have done to be qualified as evil?
i will agree that the merits of turning everything on with the server is debatable. i would think that the workstation option is for those who dont know what they are doing. you get pretty much the same type of computer when you install win2k without any services turned on.
what i think we are seeing here is two different paradigims. the windows paradigm is we install things like samba and stuff and you have to turn them on. in linux if you install it we assume you want to use it so when a service is installed it is turned on. i really cannot comment on which is best for you or others. i am accustomed to doing things in linux and so it works well for me.
new users who want to setup a server and do more than just play around should be capable of reading a bit. i've had quite a few friends who were used to nt that installed and safely configured linux by just reading the documentation. once you get into the heuristics of running an nt network it's really no less complicated. i've found my expirence with nt to be far more complicated (nt 3.51 and 4.0 i quit using ms before win 2k).
They say that MS support is better. Personally, if I had a problem with MS software and needed help, I'd take my luck
with the psychic friends network before calling Microsoft.
that would be cheaper. i hear the first reading is free:)
under reason 3. From the 188 total distributions 28 are derived from the popular Red
Hat Linux. So Red Hat is derived from the Linux kernel and then those
28 are derived from Red Hat. Nine of the 188 are derived from Debian.
Where does this stop This is starting to sound like we're headed back
in time to the 1980's and 1990's era where retailers were locked into a
single vendor's innovation.
am i the only one who finds this interesting? isn't this what microsoft wants? that is if they are the vendor in question.
At least win2k will ask if you want
IIS or anything, with linux its either server or workstation.
actually with redhat it's server, workstation, or custom. it's really hard to see because it is that big icon right below workstation. this allows you the option to select individual packages. if you say server yes everything is running. it assumes that you wanted a server and know what the hell you are doing. wheather or not this is good is debatable, but there are options for everyone. if you are going to blame redhat for the ignorance of it's users then the faults applied to microsoft would be quite excessive for the same reasons.
now there is a firewalling option during install. evidentally you can tell it to have high security during install. it looked like it was going to lock down the tcp/udp ports using iptables or some such. i didnt try it out because the box was already behind a firewall. has anyone else checked out this option that can comment on it.
i see your point. i dont think the author of the "article" really reads eulas. i say this because he thinks microsoft is ok with him paying for an oem copy of windows me and putting it on more than one computer.
back to the point. for students this is good because they can expose themselves to more software and familarize themselves with it. once they get out and get a job they will have more disposable income and can pay the full price for the software if they want. if they dont think it is worth it there are plenty of lugs out there to hook them up with linux and i would assume bsd has the same types of groups. if it is important for thier jobs many companies have site licenses. if you had to pay for it yourself i would assume you can write it off on tax day (pure speculation of course:)).
I suggest that some of these
applications drop in price -- like down to $60. There we go!
ms offers most of their applications to students via educational discounts. not that i want to pimp off ms or anything, but if you are a student you can get (or could get when i used ms stuff) visual studio, office, etc. for about $100 each. here at university of pittsburgh they have a deal with ms. you can walk into any computer labs flash your id and walk out with office, vstudio, windows upgrades, and some other stuff. so the point is that it can be really cheap for students-free (as in beer) for some and still legal.
you still shouldnt use something that is free as in speech in my opinion.
i thought it was funny. since many/.ers dont use windows (i know you have statistics about this that is why i didnt say most) and the topic is mozilla on redhat i thought the comment about running windows under linux was appropriate. that is unless microsoft has releasted ms windows and ie for linux. then your comment might seem to apply here.
personally i prefer konqueror on linux. it is fast and stable enough for my needs. more to the point. making broad genearalizations like ie on windows is the best there is period really makes you loose creadibility. it implies that you have tried every browser/os/hardware combination possible to determine this. also as someone else pointed out that lynx is faster.
i dont doubt that the mass transit in the us is at capacity. when speaking of europe i was thinking that since they were more orientated toward public transportation their concern for safety is probably a bit more focused. personally i've never felt unsafe on public transportation here in the us. i've even slept on the floor at grand central station. i realize that is purely anecdotal, and i know of no statistics for crimes associated with public transportation.
as for capacity. out refineries are at capacity right now. we could either increase production (build more refineries) or we could reduce the consumption (alternatives forms of transportation, more efficient cars, etc.). either of these options would take time and money. i dont know which is better from an economic perspective, but i think both should be considered.
also i dont damn the automobile. i'm one of those silly people who think that people kill people and not guns. so i hold people responsible for the gridlock, wasteful driving, and selecting huge monolithic suv's-not the boxes they control.
i also concede that there are people whose needs are not met by public transportation and other methods. i feel that they are a small fraction of the driving populace. if only those who had a need for a car used them then the gas problem would have less of an impact.
your sister isn't safe with a bigox like you to protect her? sorry i couldnt help myself. for what it's worth public transportation is very prevalent in europe. i personally dont have evidence for this but i am under the impression that travel there is very safe. this comes from talking to my friends who have lived there (both male and female). perhaps some europeans could comment on this.
because we can, should we be gluttonous? there is a difference between the rolling around in your own feces and abusing resources. i dont believe i mentioned anything about foregoing sanitation.
while bringing the rest of the world up to our standards is a nice sentiment, it is a goal that is not feasibly achievable. leveling the standard of living on a global basis would require us to lower ours while the others raise.
as i mentioned before, if
those who could use public transportation did
those who could use alternative forms of transportation did
then those who needed cars would be able to use them as inexpensive transportation. because most americans consider driving around in their cars to be some sort of right the gas prices will continue to climb until you are forced to either
fork out a substantial amount of money for gas
move closer to work
find a job closer
get a more fuel efficient car (if you dont already have one>
or walk to 22 miles to work.
i really think americans are very childish about this sort of thing.
What, you think city buses run on happy thoughts instead of diesel??
no but they are more efficient that the one SUV per person attitude that is prevalent here in the us.
here in the big city the busses go to most offices. if only the people who needed cars used them then gas prices would be reasonable for those who lived outside of the public transportation relm.
i grew up in a relatively small city with no public transportation (20k people). my bicycle could get me pretty much anywhere in the city in about 20-25 minutes-my bicycle runs pretty well on happy thoughts.
it just comes down to how much you want to pay for convenience. our entire culture here in the us is based on convenience. it's nice to see the populace smacked around by the reality commonly expirenced by the rest of the world. driving a car isnt a right, it's a luxury. people here get used to things and then get all up in arms when it isnt there anymore.
do you export gas or do you export petrol? since i am an american who doesnt own a car i look forward to expensive gas prices. people around here need to be smacked around and start using public transportation.
there is a benifit to doing it in space. they dont have clouds in space. the power production would be constant. this is something that isnt always achieveable on earth.
