The idea is, Debian should just drop.deb packaging and catch up with the
ease, power and user base of RPM.
thats just it. i've used both and i would agree that rpm has a larger user base but i would dissagree with the power and ease assertations. apt-get is much more powerful and easy to use in my opinon. for this reason i think it should be given more consideration. if you do things based on sheer numbers then everyone should use microsoft since they have a larger market share.
i really think more consideration should be given to the debian system of package management. it appears both redhat and debian are contributors, but i would imagine redhat contributes a bit more. i really think this is going to hurt things.
but its not new in the unix world. alot highend software in unix is like this: mentor graphics, ansys, aspen, matlab the first few that come to mind. is this another concept that they are going to embrace and extend? who knows. if you think this makes them evil, think again. there are alot of better reasons, this makes them normal in the world of enterprise software.
you might want to look into a latex/php/xxsql combo. you could construct a template like class file and then yank the info out of a database run latex on it, convert the output to postscript and dump it to a printer. the interface could be done in php. using java you could setup some type of drag and drop thing to tell it what format the data should be in. it would take quit a bit of work, though

now consider the load on the air scrubbers and the water filtration systems when you introduce about 40 times as much stress on the life support systems (if you consider a normal crew of 7). then include 40 times as much food, add alot more windows because they arent going to be able to move around too much and will at least want to look out a window once in space.

i also got matcad 6.0 to work. the fonts were screwed up. i think i could have gotten those to work eventually, but i didnt have much time to mess with it.
hey.
i really appreciate you and tag answering questions here. i've been thinking abou different distributions lately, and i have a question for the two of you.
which dist. would you suggest for a server and or a workstation? my main focus right now is the difference between redhat and debian. i've been thinking about switching my home machine over to debian and i was wondering what your take on the matter is. pros vs cons, etc.
if you dont want to discuss it in an open forum you can email me or post anonymously.
i usually buy tshirts with nothing written on them at all. is there a reason for this? i dont think a multinational company like nike really needs my help. the greatest achievement of corporate america was to convince the general public that being a walking billboard is cool. now people actually pay to advertise for nike, tommy, levis, etc.
well i would assume nasa has the "automatically execute scripts" thing turned off. plus they could easily strip all attachments at the mail server. at that point it's as safe as pine or elm.
if linux gains ground over windows 2k, i dont think that is _hurting_ linux. look at it as a net gain.
made up numbers:
next year, no recession
2,500,000 windows 2k servers are deployed
1,900,000 linux servers are deployed
next year, with recession
1,000,000 windows 2k servers are deployed
1,500,000 linux servers are deployed
so with no recession windows has a net 600k servers deployed over linux as opposed to 500k linux servers over windows with a recession. granted, with a recession, not as much linux is out there but more there is more linux than windows. speculation is really kinda silly at this point. i can see both sides. now all we have left to do is sit back and wait.

say for example your company is strapped for cash. you want a new server and some workstations. well if you use linux instead of windows you can get more workstations with the money you saved by not purchasing windows 2000 server and workstation. companies might have to put more thought into purchases. Saving $80 per workstation and $300 per server might make linux more attractive.

well i've played with rpm and apt-get. from the page
Currently the LSB does not officially specify a package format; however, the recommended package format is RPM (Version 3) with some restrictions listed below. RPM is the defacto standard on Linux and supported either directly, or indirectly by the widest number of distributions. The intent is to in the future replace this format with a new format currently being developed
