If we wil die for oil, then why not hypertext. I think a few missle-platform-helicopters followed by an army of armed nerds hopped up on coffee and trained on quake can put an end to this evil.
This sounds like a wonderful way to make your kid brother cry. Just crack his favorite videogame and add humiliating grafix where the victory screens should be. . Mom? MOM! What is the evil boss-guy doing to marios head? Ewww.. grosss!
Who ever upgrades without buying a new mobo'? Usuailly the frontside bus speed requirements has doubled by the time you get a new cpu. Compatability doesn't do much if your hobbling because of antique (1 year old) hw.
How about Tauntware (What I think your doing). Or Straightware (What you claim you wanted), Tightware (something about sex here...), Hardware (intimidating?), Rigidware(sex sex sex), Stiffware (lets just leave that), or last but not least Stressware. . Yeah, troll boy, your on to something. We could add definite Chick-Value(tm) to the product...
I can't see the courts buying that. You'd need a good reason for the "good" content to be scrambled as such. They would say that the "good" content has no need to be encoded as such, and probably argue that it was just put up to protect the "bad" and as such should also be removed. . You are giving authoritarians too much credit. If the "bandits" look like they are going to win, they change the rules.
I have a vision of running everything that I can in windows on my linux box as if it were native. And waching microsoft sit on it's hands and cry. While this may seem far off right now (wine) with all the atention that linux gets these days... Anyway, kudos to the hacker.
Sure, surfing yahoo may not change your life, but consider the impact that computers, and low cost telecomunication have had in total. After all, these are the inventions that really make the net possible. They may not change your standard of living that much, but they change you experiance of life in a big way. If you don't beleve me, stop using the phone, or a computer. I already gave up my tv and microwave as useless extras but my cable modem goes over my dead body...
This can cut down on the number of silly internet patents. If the site logs all these good ideas, they can be used to defeat silly patents on forward thinking but semi-obvious ideas.
Why? What makes the other messages sacred? If you base the existance of you message on illegal content, you are asking to have the authorities mess up your scene.
regardless of the other things that may depend on it
Assume every time a block is censored it destroys about five messages in the system. (Estimated from the use of five pads to encode a new pad.) And if removing one message results in five blocks being removed from the system, then one censored message destroys about 25 unknown others. This means that if there is about a 1/25 rate of messages going through resulting in action being taken by police, the probablility of anything going through becomes fairly low. . My apologies to the author.
Why won't adversaries of the system flood it with junk? . How does it protect the originator once the set of pads used is revealed? Isn't it no better than mailing your message to a "we like illegal information" mailing list and knowing that the cat is out of the bag as you go to jail? . There is still a major cryptographic weakness here: By using all permutations of the pads available a cryptographer can very quickly find a permutations with high statistical redundancy. Simply put, the aren't one time pads. They are publically known pads. A contradiction. If enough pads are to be generated to avoid statistical redundancy, there names would have almost be as long as their contents, and well that just makes things silly. . Why not just release the pad after the fact, instead of having weaker public pads?
There seems to be this mith that if I link my code with GPL'd and distribute it that my code becomes GPL'd. . I own my code until I assign it to sombody. Regardless of what I do with a linker. It's "just" violating the rights of the author who produced the GPL'd work if I distribute it. . The GPL doesn't take ownership of anyones code. It is not a legal entity (like a person or corp.), and uninforced has no rights of it's own. It's just a bloody liscence that you can use on YOUR code. . I'm GPL'ing this post and I own yours cause it's nested after it. You been owned by acidrain with my 1337 posting skillz. (Please understand that this is satire.)
The only people who's rights are being trampled on here are the authors of KDE. They own the code, and the fact the they used the GPL doesn't mean anything if they don't wan't to enforce it. Yes redistribution is illegal, but as the old saying goes "you can't rape the willing." They could liscence the code under the single rule "It's illeagal to distribute this code" and it would be effectively the same. . I would perfer that they just didn't have a liscence at all than mocking the GPL like that, but they have the right to contradict themselves. . I have heard that some of the code was adopted by KDE, and that would be a whole other kettle of fish. They just have no liscence. . Now if you could convice them to sue themselves for violation of thier copyright....
Because you can do almost anything you like to *BSD code. Anyone can build binarys and then sell them as if they wrote it themselves with whatever sick liscence they like... The author's interests are not protected in any way beyond some versions of the liscence requiring a mention of them. In that case, the addition of some undisclosed bit of proprietary code prevents the free redistribution mentioned in the liscence from taking effect. You just say "SOME PART OF THIS APPLICATION HAS THIS LISCENCE ON IT" without identifying what part. . BSD code can be hijacked by anyone. Thats why the GPL.
Or $62500 kilometer for those of us who have a sane measurement system. $62.50, a meter and $0.625 a centemeter. (All you Americans are turning green with envy at my metric poweress... Bwa ha ha ha.) . 63 cents a centemeter!?!? I wouldn't want to be the first man to ride an elevator at that price!?!?
Just try downloading something like a 3 meg mp3 for gnutella, it will take hours.
Translation: yours is smaller. . Seriously tho, it is a routing nightmare. There is an active development scene too tho, and y'all should check into that.
If I can see it or hear it I can record it. Lets face it, there going to have to accept the poeple who wan't to pay for it paying, and the rest... well, look at history. I mean I wish these people luck, but they had better not be liable for any cracking.
If this quote (which is apparently what Debian maintains) is true, then aren't Redhat, Corel, Mandrake, SuSE, (etc. etc. etc. etc.) BREAKING THE LAW by distributing binary KDE packages?
I'd sure like to see the KDE official statement on this. It seems really wierd it hasn't that come up in this discussion. Anyone have any pointers?
In another 10 years fsck will be taboo in the mainstream and net nanny software will ban access to *NIX distros...
ef.sec: 1. Filesystem check. 2. Experiancing something like fs corruption. May have gained popularity due to it's similar spelling to "fuck." This is of course almost identical to the popular meaning of "fucked," and therefore has similar usage.
Also, the term "fucked" as you use it is also slang.
There a server company, with the allmighty Solaris OS! Surely they can handle the Linux using masses checking out thier website? Sigh. Poor sun.

He knows that. He is saying it needs more attention than this. Why don't you read the posts.
No being a moderator, I'll second that the old fasion way...
