Ha ha ha. Yes they are:) All moderators are idiots, and whenever I become a moderator I instantly become an idiot too... It must be something in the water.

Well most people don't have 120" screens, but I agree that a 17" monitor is a poor replacement for even my 27" TV. Although more and more now, I find myself watching TV on my 21" monitor... Oh well.

No, I think it's a bad idea. Although I am not elitist about Linux and I would like to see as many people use it as possible, what you're suggesting just doesnt' make sense. You can't make everyone happy. Trying to make everyone happy just makes a bunch of people mildly dissatisfied (see Windows 3.1 through NT4).
If there's anything I've learned as a developer, it's "Know your audience". If you audience is techies then target techies. Make the techies fabulously happy. Sure, some computer-illiterate people aren't going to want to use the product, but BFD. On the other hand, if your target is newbies, then target newbies. Make everything simple, easy, and pointy-clicky. They'll thank you for it, and the techies will just use something else.
The mistake is trying to please both (or more) groups. There's no reason that different distros can't target different groups, but I think it's clear that the developing community, as a whole, is thinking more along the lines of targetting techies (simply because that's what they are).

Agreed, and moreover, I think languages like C++ will probably see their end too. Strong memory-management languages like Java (although, not Java in particular) will probably replace it and other OO systems

Well other than the legal-issues that BSD had when they should have been becoming the prominent free OSes, there's the matter of interest, which is directly tied to effort.
More people are interested in Linux simply because more people are interested in Linux. It's sort of like a rolling ball of snow; Linux is collecting more people as it goes. So are the BSDs but they are a little behind right now.

Just out of curiosity, how do you know if someone has cracked the key out of a "blessed" client? When they've broken your e-commerce system and stolen thousands of dollars worth of good from you?

This is dumb. Seriously, I kind of expect more from ESR by now, I don't know about the rest of you. Quake => E-Commerce? No way, E-Commerce (Open Sourced or not) has no business providing any sort of control over the process on the client-side. In a decently designed model, everything would be server-side, except what is relevant to the customer. Unfortunately, to do everything server-side in a highly CPU/graphics intensive game like Quake, would cause a huge slowdown. That's the issue here. But until your e-commerce needs to do 1024x768 @ 60 fps, I don't think this is really all that relavent.

I've got a TNT2 running OpenGL, and I must say that, although it's a hell of a lot better than software OpenGL, it's also a hell of a lot worse than Windows OpenGL. I don't know when XFree 4.0 is going to be out, and when Mesa is going to support their DRI, but until then, getting a commercial server is an option... simply because there is no Open Source alternative.

What makes you so sure that Hotmail is running BSD? Or that Slashdot is running Linux? Yeah, they could be falsely IDing themselves, but I doubt it. As for your second point: so what? Most heavily-trafficked web-sites do run as clusters, for obvious performance and reliablity reasons.

It's a double-conspiracy! Slashdot is working to make FreeBSD look bad, so that Linux and NT look good. That way, when Andover releases their new hybrid Andoverix NT operating system, based on the Linux-kernel and the NT blue-screen it will be lovingly accepted by the awaiting public... Or maybe not.

The fact that it doesn't respond to pings is unremarkable. They may simply have the machine (or the firewall it's behind) blocking ICMP traffic. I set my companies firewall up that way.

You know what I think is funny? Microsoft's webpage is run on NT servers, and it's *never* been Slashdotted (or hacked either, AFAIK). But everyone loves quoting that NT can't handle Hotmail's services. Believe me, if it can handle the MSN & MS homepages, it can handle Hotmail. I think the problem was probably in the implementation they used... I guess we'll never know.
