This thing isn't even meant for Linux. Seriously, I have nothing against people GPL'ing old software (better than just trashing it, I guess), but if you're going to write a new RPG you'd really be better off starting from itch on this one. Of course, that's just my opinion; I could be wrong.

Yeah, god forbid someone should use any development method other than the one that you like. I understand where you're coming from, but blacklisting companies that haven't emraced open source will not encourage others to do so.
I guess the point is, you catch more ants with honey...

I think his point was that people in the US have done the same thing already with Linux, in the form of a fabric softener. To the best of my knowledge this has nothing to do with Russian Trademark laws -- you'd be able to get away with the same thing here, on the grounds that the products were completely unrelated.

First, I don't think that the company's name is Windows99, so it's not like an investor would be throwing money directly into Windows99. And even if it was the company's name, any investor who'd throw money at it without researching would have to be either stupid or drunk (which is always a possibility).

The man was not a geek, he was an established scam-artist. He created the printing press, thinking he would be able to make some quick cash off of it. Somehow I think motive should factor into something like this.

Here's an topic that I've batted back and for awhile now. Here on/. we're all pretty well informed about technology and the laws regarding it, because that's what we're interested in. But there's a huge number of slashdotters that seem to look down on people who don't feel the same way. Namely, AOL and Windows users.
Let's give these guys a break. They don't want to learn the command-line. They don't want to edit config files. And they don't want to play around with dial-up settings. Sure, it's a trade off. They get a second-rate operating system and an ISP that basically just wants to fuck them over for Ad revenue. BFD, but don't say that those who aren't "in-the-know" are the biggest danger to personal liberties.

What the hell does that have to do with anything? I propose a new rule. It will be just like the Adolf Hitler rule (whenever someone in a conversation makes an analogy to Hitler, the thread is over) and it will go like this: Whenever someone tries to explain the fall of communism, the thread is over.
My reasoning? Much like most/.ers have a I-think-I'm-a-lawyer complex, everyone here seems to feel they are the utmost authority on the world's economic system. Yeah right, c'mon guys let's stick to what we know.

Well I still really really enjoyed Shawshank, but I digress. I'm going to order "The Passion of Joan of Arc", and if it turns out to be anything but incredible, I'll hunt you down and beat the $25 out of you with a spatula, okay?
That said, what's up with Madacy? That's the 2nd time you mentioned the shoddiness of their films. Something I should know about?

"You can't shake the Devil's hand and say you're only kidding."
Of all the movies to pick out as bad, you chose Shawshank? Why? This is offtopic, sure, but what exactly didn't you like about that movie. It's certainly not the most realistic film I've ever seen, but that's hardly the point. OH WHY?? WHY?? WHY!?!?!!

On the other hand, if you were to actively advertise for someone who was distributing bootlegs (enough so that Judge could rule that you were helping his business), you would easily be held as an accessory to that bootlegging.
I don't agree with what's going on, but it's certainly some interesting food for thought.

No, that's a matter of whether or not something is user servicable. If you've tampered with something, they have every right to refuse its return. That would be like opening up your Microwave, sticking a fork in the coils (does a Microwave have coils?) and then returning it. Maybe the fork didn't break the system, but it's still not the same as when you bought it.
Reverse engineering is fundamentally different idea. Although the metaphorical "box" is still being opened, you're not trying to return it or anything, just use the information you gain by doing so. And yes, you can open a Microwave oven and play around with the insides to your hearts content... That's what the DVD people are trying to take away from us: Our right to free usage of something that we've already paid for.

"You can't shake the Devil's hand and say you're only kidding."
Yeah, there's a lot of things that I'm sure we'd all like to see open-sourced, but get real it's not going to happen. Selling "support" for Operating Systems is one thing, but for games? Forget it. If someone thinks of a way to make money off free games, I'd love to hear it... And the street-performer-protocol doesn't count.

"You can't shake the Devil's hand and say you're only kidding."
Riiiiiight... They're 1-up'ing ID how? Epic isn't releasing the whole game Open Source, the.plan even said so. It's nice that they're OS'ing some of it, but it's hardly free software.
-----------
"You can't shake the Devil's hand and say you're only kidding."
Well yes and no -- just because it's written in the license, doesn't mean that it's rock-solid. If I ran a hospital, I might have a patient's life depending on a device that ran embedded NT (God forbid). If that machine were to crash and the person were to die, *and* I were able to prove (by reconstructing the circumstances) that it was NT that was at fault, I could easily sue and win a wrongful-death suit against MS. It doesn't matter what their license says
