This would be a valid argument if the actual artist was the primary benefactor of profits from recorded media sales. When the "artist" receives less than 10% (probably less than 5%) of the profits of record sales, who is the injured party?

"And many artists, from gold-record seller Ice T to unknown garage bands, are starting to voluntarily encode their music in MP3 for free distribution through sites such as MP3.com or to sell through digital music vendors such as EMusic and CDNow."

Artists now have an outlet that bypasses the record company, and the record companies are running scared. I love it! The record companies have been ripping off artists and fucking up radio with their play lists for long enough. Maybe their rein is over!

I lost a job over this kind of knee jerk reaction. As a desktop support person I was dealing with a particularly troublesome user with a long history of "probems". When I was done I commented to an admin that I needed a fully loaded semi-automatic assult rifle to do some venting (in jest of course). But given the prevailling climate (my twisted sense of humor, and poor timing) in less than an hour I was escorted off the property by security! With no explaination at all, just "you've got to go"! We can't use you any more........

    don't file taxes
This is the difficult one. It's possible to pay your taxes without filing, or getting any identifying numbers, but you have to plan it very carefully and avoid certain kinds of investments. You also have to read way too much income tax law and argue with people paying you a bit. Having photocopies of the chapter and verse of the law is very useful.

    ***********************************
I tried this and the state attached my wages for not filing, even though they owed me money!!! And beware the feds will keep any return not claimed within three years! I got a very expensive education via that loophole, if there is a way around either please quote state or fed regs that apply.
