I'm sorry, but I just HAVE to reply to this. First of all, I don't agree with the one who started the thread, but some of the things you are saying isn't quite so.
Well, guess what. I'm sick of the British way of spelling things, and then trying to claim it's the US that spells it wrong. They're two different dialects, and within themselves, they're both right. Deal with it.
Now, this is the typical response from a country which once was another country's colony. When they become independant, they quickly screw up the language so that it dosen't look like the original too much. Why? Well, maybe same reason Microsoft uses EEE....
Regarding the free right of speech, even though the American Constitution says you are garanteed this, are you really free to speak about anything you want in America? Hell no, not if you happend to be a minority of some kind. The freedom of speech only counts if what you are saying is strictly mainstream.
Other countries, even though they are granted the right of free speech from their government, are more free on this topic. E.g. Even if you are a Nazi, you are free to speak out your message. Now I'm not, and I don't like extreamist groups, but still if you want to have free speech, it just HAS to include everyone, not just the ones that follow the current political agenda.
Finally, let me just add a little anti-slashdot message, I'll bet this message dosen't get moderated up, simply because most of the messages getting modetated up contains a hell of alot of bull, and this one don't. "I don't like the way this group is turning, better leadership might help".
PS: Thanks for posting all the askslashdot's I've sent over the years... NOT! But then again, they were actual technical questions that deserved a discussion, and no bullshit. Maybe thats the American side of Slashdot, not being able to accept critisism....
Well, it's true that the MCSE's suffer from the many exam cram books, boot camps, websites etc. etc. where you just get the answers, much like the earlier Troll post.
However, you'll always see this happening because of the quick bucks thats awailable for thoose companies willingly to prostitute themselves to do so. Hell, even the exam prep's for MC* costs money now, and currently two companies are compeeting with this.
So, what I'm saying is, that certifications really doesn't matter, they are just a tool for managers who dossen't have the ability or even care to evaluate their employees skills.
And by the way, I'm an MCSE, having taken the tests required in 1 month because of a raise if I did, two at a time, never read a single line for one of them. Real life experience is really what counts, your OWN experience, not others.
How do you messure experience? Simple, take a good technical guy/gal with decent social skills with you to the interview, and let him/her question the person you are about to hire. Then ask the technical guy/gal what his/her feelings are about the person being interviewed. Very very simple.
I've been running linux since 1993, started with computers back in 1985 with the good old C=64, so I'm not exactly a Microsoft drone, but when you grow older, get a wife and all, you just have bet on the horse that runs in the money. And that horse is currently Microsoft. At least in Denmark it is...
I just LOVE the idea, if it's going to be awailable for non-US residents also! I keep getting +40 spam mails every day, all from the US unfortunately, so any restrictions on thoose companies would be very welcome.
I frankly don't have any use for special dentist deals in the US when I live in Denmark.:)
My words exactly. It's always 3th party products, or drivers that f*cks up your Windows installation.
In fact, I've just got my W2K blown by Adaptec Easy CD-creator, so much for easy, eh? M$ is not always to blame, often it's the small companies that say: "Let's ride the wave and earn some quick bucks".
One thing more, can anyone tell me why I have to upgrade BIOS on almost every hardware device I got, every two months? And when you do, to get like a new application working, you have to have different BIOS combinations of your hardware devices, because some of them dosen't work with others.
Linux is also "bug riddled", theese days I seldom download some pice of source without having to change at least 5 source files before it even works just a little bit. Well, it's fine for thoose who have nothing else to do, but I happend to have a busy schedule, so I don't have time to fix software, in my spare time.
Maybee the answer to all this isn't in the greed of the big company manager division, but more fundemental, in the very nature of human beings, and the society of the late 90', which seems to stimulate this very primitive behavor.
Compaq moves the production of the Alpha processors to the factories in Fremont California.
Same place as where they produce the former Tandem NonStop Himalaya servers, because they're going to use Alpha processors in thoose instead of MIPS which is used today.
So, what this really means is, that Compaq are going to make some kickass servers with the best technologi awailable. Imagine one of thoose running Linux...
I started to use Linux because I wanted to run some applications from different Unix platforms.
I use Slackware for this, mainly because you 9 out of 10 times just compile your Unix source and it runs smoothly without any changes at all.
Redhat and Debian dosen't have this compatibility, usally you have to make major changes in your Unix source to get it working, which consumes vast amounts of time, time that you don't have(Unless ofc. you're a student like the majority here).
What I've seen since I started with Linux around 1994, is Redhat is using more and more of Microsoft technologies, like the good old EEE(Extend, Embrace, Extinguish), e.g. Desktop environments.
What Redhat needs to do, is, saying "we're NOT a GPL company, we make our own enhancements to Linux, you can get the source, but we don't really get a damn if you can't compile it on your distribution in a 100 years".
What would they achieve by doing that? They could actually start getting payed for their work, noboddy really trusts something thats free. Also, they could boost small software companies, if they were able to get paid for their software. Noone can make a living making free software, and if you want to make a living as developer, you need CASH for your efforts.
Because of that, all small companies that want to survive makes MS Windows software. If you were able to develop software for e.g. Redhat linux, you might end up with a real alternative to MS Windows.

Strange... you would think US programmers had the world record in LOC because of Microsoft:)
LOC is a tool made for thoose who manage programmers, people who knows next to nothing about programming. Therefore they need a tool to mesure the progress and effictiveness of the programmers they are managing.
What they don't realize is the fact that the low LOC often isn't because the programmers are lazy or of poor skill, but because they just don't know what to code because of very poor management.
Or it all might be because programmers don't want to be slaves anymore, there IS more to life than computers.:)

This is not the most complete list over Linux distributions, it's just poorly written by someone who rates the most hip distributions as the best.
Slackware for one is hardly mentioned, and saying it's for beginners in Linux is just plain stupid.
It must have been written by a journalist without much technical skill....
