  1. Re:This and Napster...comparable?? on Caught Before the Act · · Score: 1

The difference is that Napster can be misused by individuals (to little or no harm). This can be misused by the Government. We are individuals, They are the government.

And that's not nearly as flippant as it seems on first reading.

  2. Re:I hope nobody falls for it. on Neurocomputing Makes Headway · · Score: 1

The human cerebellum (yes, cerebellum)is remarkably efficient at learning, and automating, tasks. Do you really think that every time you drive you think about moving your hands around the steering wheel, and how hard to press the accelerator? No, you just do it. Piano players play the piano, they don't think about every little finger movement. And so it should be with this. With proper feedback the cerebellum is trained to do these tasks automatically. You think about the cursor moving, rather than about moving your finger to get the cursor to move. So, it isn't necessary they pinpoint the "exact" spot. They pinpoint some spot, which then becomes the spot that controls that function.

  3. Ant colony heuristics on RoboFly · · Score: 1

Actually, the algorithm that ants use to explore their surroundings and find the shortest paths to food is based on reinforcement learning, not fuzzy logic. There's a good paper by Subramanian, Druschel and Chen on how this relates to dynamic network routing. Here's a link. And here's the follow up.

  4. Elements on I Want Names for my Servers! · · Score: 1

Granted, not in a professional setting, but I use the name of the element which corresponds to the last segment of the IP. Which works pretty good until you get much above 100.

  5. Soul Coughing! on Ask Slashdot: What Music do you Code By? · · Score: 1

Amen brother. I can't believe we are the only two out there that listen to soul coughing while coding. And if we are, the rest of you out there need to hear this.

"Stop hitchin' with the monster man/
    It was a bad plan/
but I had to get to town./
Unbitten, but the way I found it was a hand came down/
    And pow! I got illuminated."

  6. Neural Nets detect patterns on Virtual Immune Systems Headed for Market · · Score: 1

Neural nets are quite adept at detecting patterns, given the proper training. I myself wrote a quite simple little nnet proggie to recognise whether it was looking at a face or not. It had a decent success rate. A little tweaking, and it became able differentiate between multiple faces.

however, asking it to complete patterns is a different story...

  7. Re:I know this is a nit but... on Scientists create flu virus entirely from genes · · Score: 1

I read it as "Influenza A", that is, a strain of influenza designated "A". Which would make the sentence work (Assuming "virii" correct).
    Why else capitalize it?

  8. Re:Ok, so what *IS* the 'infringing technology'? on Compaq Attempts to Muscle eMachines in Court · · Score: 2

Okay, I work at Compaq (as a summer intern), and I saw the internal story on this. There are about 13 patents in question, and I would say at least half of them shouldn't have been approved in the first place. I can't give the details because the stupid screen says "Compaq Confidential: Need to Know".
The patents are all vague and trivial. Yeah, Compaq may be going down. But to be fair, they are really trying to turn it around, not just sue everybody because they can't think of anything else.
