Maybe. We already have two versions of a single email Ken is credited with authoring. Given enough light, we can see who is trying to hide beneath the shadows.

  2. Can you spell A R C H I V E on Harvard's response to the Packet Storm incident · · Score: 1

This is the question I would like to see answered. Did Ken participate in the creation of the material or was he simply archiving it? Sounds like a number of people approved of the material Ken was archiving!

True. But Harvard has not helped their case with the wealth of information they are providing ;-).

I searched for information yesterday and read the statement posted above. Seems to me like Harvard holds most the cards. They have the original JP message as well as any communications with Ken. Despite the education they are dishing out, it looks like they were the student in this issue!

Hard to believe you did not hear both sides from the previous links. Did you notice the comments from others (minus the ACs) claiming that JP is not credible based upon prior experience? Listening to both sides is not an excuse for being gullible!

I am glad to see both sides of the issue here. But I cannot help wondering why you suggest the comments indicate this is a "good thing." Your definition of "registerable mark" also seems to indicate "massive funding" is important!

Is this the real story? Was this all a ploy to extract massive funding? Egos aside, I wonder about such motivations. I would hate to put words in someone's mouth so perhaps we should _all_ agree to definitions first ;-).

I agree whole heartedly. But today we live in a world where polls showed that the US president can LIE to the public and it will be accepted. I guess this data supports the claim that people are too dumb to handle the responsibility. Maybe we should look at it as a Darwinian case where TRUST is the skill to master ;-).

And finally, good news to report. I have not talked with the GTE rep yet, but he brought a notebook to the house and plugged it into the DSL modem to verify everything. After he left, my partner plugged in the Dell notebook we have and also got good results.

Now comes the fun part, I am using a Debian based system as my primary machine. I have 3 NICs (3c509, Racal-Interlan, NE2000 clone) to retest. If this approach does not show some immediate results, I still have that old 486DX50 which I put a new 13G Maxtor drive in this past weekend. And at some point, I need to pop all this stuff off the stack so that I can get back to that Xfree86 MediaGX driver I was testing.

    Sleep, it's overrated anyway ;-)

I also live in SoCal (Lancaster) area and GTE is my provider. A week ago they installed ADSL but it has not worked right yet. To their credit, I am getting good feedback from them. Last night I swapped the Orckit (Fujitsu) modem and the problem persists. Today they will test from the CO and look to see if a Load Coil is on my line. The local people I am talking to on the phone are very courteous and answer my questions honestly. I give them brownie points for this, but I wish the line had worked in the first place ;-).

In principle, I agree with your argument. But the other concern I see would come from a natural tendency for moderators to score this way which could lead to an elitist culture. After all, how would a new user break into this group? The power of random selection is the likeliness of including people you would not normally give consideration to.

Maybe we should define cheap? I cannot help but think how much each one of those transisters costs. Last time I checked, Electronics 101 used the transister as the building block for circuits.

Now we have a company like Cyrix using Memory Controller, Video Card, PCI Bus Controller, Display Controller, etc...

If Moore's Law continues for the foreseeable future, where will it lead us? Are you seeing the trees or the forest? I think openning the data sheets will allow the gifted technologists to design and develope systems that create entire new industries. When the first copy machine was sold to business, did anyone envision how many people would use it to distribute Grandma's brownie recipe?

Saying that Cyrix mainly integrated 3D graphics, or Open Source has a negative effect by eliminating jobs, is similar to judging a dangerous iceberg by the portion you see above the water ;-).

To date myself here, DEC VMS has a nifty autogen tool that even an idiot could run to tune the OS. My experience taught me at a previous job that eventually the morons thought they were fully qualified system admins. It just seems to work out that way when you take a basically unqualified person and give them an easier way to reach the goal.

This is just another example of why you should ask questions before buying it. A manufacturer who only wants your money is frequently NOT willing to show the details of their product. Asking for Open specs is a way to prevent them from "pulling a fast one" on you.
